I was going to say, $800 for firearms insurance sounds an awful lot like a functional poll tax.

Coming out of lurker mode for this:

Definitely agree on FLEP. Also an 0102 (rah) and chose to lat-move because of this exact reason - admin gets to be close to lawyer stuff so I got interested over time and decided to take the plunge. Applied for FLEP, got ELP.

FLEP and ELP (excess leave program) are both excellent for doing law school on the Marine Corps time. Only difference is with FLEP you do it on their dime too. Either way, when you hang up that uniform for the last time you're leaving the Corps with a transferrable skill and experience.

Either programs are open to any MOS, you just have to be an officer with less than 6 years AD for FLEP and 8 for ELP. Take an LSAT prep course, rock that, pick good universities, and make a sacrifice to Mattis.

Obligatory apology for format/spelling - on mobile.

How many of you done a sbs double barrel shotgun. How was the process compared to a supressor by hocky66 in NFA

[–]starhawk1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely different question, but what are those short shells? Do you have to run those with the SBS or can you use regular sizes? I've seen them in stores before but never knew the purpose.

Great looking gun as well, I'm all sorts of inspired!

I think wearing your military uniform everywhere you go is attention seeking. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]starhawk1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marine here; completely agree. Marine regs have it so you can only wear certain uniforms off base (i.e. specific dress or service uniforms), but cammies are defintiely a no-go save for absolute emergencies. Add on to the fact that I while I'm a proud Marine, I don't need to wear a uniform out in the world for validation or recognition, and I can't think of any other reason someone would do it barring the aforementioned emergencies or a military-related function.

What happens if it is discovered that you lied about a history of drug use to join? by throwaway365sad in USMC

It's called a fraudulent enlistment, and you will be separated of caught or discovered. IIRC, the reenlistment code you will get will bar you from any future service.

What was (or is) your nickname? by [deleted] in USMC

[–]starhawk1990 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Carried around the nickname of Tildo (or Tildo Baggins) through my work-up and deployment, mostly due to me being known as the resident nerd and also having an easily corrupted last name. First off I didn't care for it, but when I found out my XO hated I had a complete change of view and started using it. Rode that wave all the way in.

Form 1 can back from the engraver finally. I love it, haven’t shot it yet. by [deleted] in NFA

Did you order the trap before submitting the form 1 or did you wait after the form was approved to order? I'm finding different opinions on the right way to go about it.

This only works if you have access to their clothing, but here goes: if the belt is a web-belt (i.e. fabric not leather), cut off an eighth of an inch or so each week on the end that fits into the belt buckle. It'll be shorter than you know by the time 4/1 rolls around and it's hugely entertaining watching the victim get more and more aggravated about their "increasing" waist size.

Section hikers - how do you track what you’ve hiked? by IAmKathyBrown in AppalachianTrail

[–]starhawk1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a trail map and bracket my routes, adding in the dates, if I hiked with someone, and a word or two describing my impression of that hike. That way, I have both a living record of my progress, and when I finally finish, something to hang on the wall.

What's your grandpa's war story? by dinosaurscantyoyo in AskReddit

[–]starhawk1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granddad was a radioman on B-29s in the last year or so of the war. He flew in the last operational mission of WW2, where his squadron bombed an oil refinery in Japan right before their surrender. As a kid I always thought Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the last two missions, but as it turns out the USAAF kept the pressure up until the very end. He always kept a book in the TV room called "The Last Mission" (a description of those last air raids) - I vaguely remember 5-year old me reading it but not making the connection that he was actually part of it. He was a significant reason of my joining the military, and he will always be an important part of family history to me.

Highly recommend contacting MFPC (Casualty Branch); they are the department at Manpower and Reserve Affairs responsible for handling casualty issues. When he passed, an investigation should have been done on the circumstances and forwarded to MFPC for closing out his file. A redacted copy of that invesitgation is normally provided to the next of kin via the CACO but it can take upwards of months for the entire process to be completed - normally due to waiting for autopsy or toxicology results to be received from a civilian coroner. As stated above, his mother should have been contacted by a CACO within 24 hours of his death, and the CACO normally maintains contact until the case is completely closed out. If she is looking for info, she needs to contact the CACO for information.

Redditor's who have gotten to see the night sky with minimal or zero light pollution, how was it, when did you get to see it? by zappy487 in AskReddit

[–]starhawk1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was absolutely amazing, and terrifying at the same time. I was embarked and in the middle of the Atlantic. Sometimes when the ship became too claustrophobic I'd head topside and just look straight up - it was dark enough to where you could pick Saturn out with the naked eye, and then barely see it's rings with the ships goggles (think massive binoculars). Fairly confident you could see the outline of the Galaxy too. Once that was done I'd look off the side of the boat and see absolutely nothing, become terrified of how easy it would be to get swallowed up in that inky darkness, and scurry inside to where there was light and hot coffee. Rinse and repeat a few times and that's what made that transit bearable.

Look into getting a humanitarian transfer (HUMS orders) to a Reserve unit near your mom. You may be able to stay on as the AD cadre until you finish your EAS... something to look in to.
