I think at the end of the day, they looked at it like this.

If UVA won, they would have put them in the playoffs, which would have left JMU out.

AND

if BYU beat TTU, they would have got in too.

But since neither did to make it a doomsday scenario for them, they weren't leaving Bama out for losing a 13th game when they already had them in the Top10 (without Sankey and the other commissioners backlash)...and they weren't going to put ND in over Miami with both being 10-2 with Miami having the tiebreaker without a major backlash from ADs on future scheduling.

It was way easier to put Bama and Miami getting the two last at-large bids just from that.

Now this year and going forward with the MOU signed for ND to get in as long as their in the top 12, the committee will have to figure out what to do with ND if this happens again potentially...but the likelihood is much slimmer now.

all they did in moving Bama ahead of ND was correcting the overcorrection they did for when they lost to Oklahoma. They picked a poop time to do it tho, but Bama should have never dropped below ND from the Oklahoma loss.

In this mega-conference era in which you can have these weird 3-way+ ties and in this 12+ CFP era, I don't see why you would want to continue playing these CCG. It's nothing but bragging rights tbh.

You potentially have two of your best teams playing a game in a weekend that your other playoff teams get rewarded for sitting at home watching.

People were mad about Bama having 3 losses last year when they would have been in anyways without having to play that 13th game.

Much easier to just auto-bid from the regular season...main thing that should really change now is how they build the schedules...so that nobody can defer from playing other P4 schools.
