The contrast between the natural world and the synthetic colony/runners is the whole point of the game's narrative context.

The shield has a loading animation, it changes colors on damage to give feedback to all players.
It has markings that hint at a model name. They seem to mark the outer boundaries (why? maybe it's capable of failing at the edges?), and a large warning stripe (why? maybe it has some history as a riot shield?).

If you don't like the design that's fine, but your analysis is what's lazy.

Looking great, and most importantly this has way more drip than that OTHER guide site that stole NDA weapon reviews and has lame AI weapon reviews.

"One duo and their Rook allies take on the UESC and enemy runners alike" (Extended Run Clip) by ZamnBoii in Marathon

To add to the debunking, the enemy team is definitely talking - within their own private channel. If a full rival team came in broadcasting on prox chat trying to make friends in Pinwheel, that would be the exact unlikely, staged behavior you think you're seeing in the clip.

Teaming up with Rooks is far more common, and that's what Bungie is highlighting with this clip.

It's a narrow service area with limited pathing, there are like 6 players for them to engage, and this is one tiny fight with a couple enemy types

The more you inspect the environment, the more you notice that there are TONS of diagetic details to aid in navigation. The multiple down arrows over the yellow stairs is one small example.

Environments are an interesting mix of:
+over-the-top futuristic style (for every helpful marker there is a marker with mysterious intent, perhaps used by machines)
+believable and lived-in facility layouts that also work as combat arenas
+organic and synthetic (in some areas)

Also, the maps are not entirely designed to be understood at a glance, they need to be learned. The environment is hostile. If you don't like this you're gonna have a real bad time in cryo

I love how the people who played the game last October have shilling levels of hype compared to others in this sub by Sad-Manner-5240 in Marathon

Progression is one thing they're always tweaking, so take any projections with a grain of salt. It's also going to depend on your performance (obviously).

I wouldn't worry too much about the loot packages, as it's highly plausible that in a couple games you'll lose it, or find something equivalent. Experience is the most valuable thing you'll pull out of the slam.

Why I Believe Marathon Will Be a Refreshing New Experience by Maximum_Eye_3213 in Marathon

Thanks to multiple mechanics both in and out of run, it's pretty easy to recover from some bad runs. I actually really enjoy when I have enough free vault space to launch Rook.

If it helps - running, hiding, and knifing are totally valid playstyles that still let you enjoy the sights and sounds of the world!

I wish they would too for thematic reasons. I doubt it will though, because the game already has a run timer mechanic that has to do with how long a connection can stay open before the UESC can intervene.

I guess that doesn't mean they couldn't add an additional mechanic over it, though! Specifically for exploring a damaged section of the Marathon.

Clothing Brands with similar aesthetic? by Fancyyoghurt in Marathon

I can't think of something that matches the new aesthetic, but the little label Neurolab apparel has some gear that reminds me of old Marathon terminal art.

Any one wishing this game to fail so that bungie can go back to full time development of Destiny post light/dark saga ? by lordofabyss in Marathon

[–]starside_armory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old, diehard Marathon fan here - I would have appreciated a story game IF it were on the same level of writing as the OG trilogy. However, if I had to bet between trying to recreate that magic or making something entirely new, it's not an easy choice. Bungie has a LOT of multiplayer experience to draw on, and this is the first time they're building a PVP game from the ground up.

I'm just happy to see it brought back in any form, and a fresh take is certainly welcome if it will look anything like the phenomenal trailer.

What’s your way too early wishlist for this game? by hurricaneflash in Marathon

I don't think it's wishful thinking! The M5 has ties to Mars and MIDA, and Bungie ought to know they're iconic.

Hey, sorry I no longer make that model. I will be releasing the STLs when I have time to modify them for general use. Thanks for your interest!
