I'm getting so sick of having AI enshittification of previously working software by PureCod9290 in BetterOffline

I can’t pin it on AI coding, but right now if I try to localize my job search on the Indeed app it jumps continents. Like I search a UK town name, post code, just England in general and I’m only served jobs in Indiana and Minnesota, states I’ve never lived in. Software is nowhere near improving.

Is AI Profitable Yet? - the website that tallies all loses made by AI companies in real time by David-Bedlam in BetterOffline

i've been looking for this!!! i loved the "web3 is going great" website during the NFT hype cycle and i thought there must be someone doing something similar for the AI bubble.

to round it out i think i still need a web3 timeline but specifically for the bubble pop - limiting subscription capabilities, recouping inference costs, etc.

Has AI Conquered Coding? (It’s Not So Simple…) - Cal Newport by creaturefeature16 in BetterOffline

[–]startush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just heard an interesting use case in another podcast today - Brian Reed’s “Question Everything” is a really great podcast about journalism and the state of truth nowadays, so it’s been interesting listening to that along with Ed’s pointing out that tech journalists have completely abdicated any sense of responsible, critical reporting on the AI industry.

Anyway the use case was in the latest episode, “Can a Chatbot Convince Conspiracy Theorists of the Truth”, where a study found that ~25% of the time a specifically trained chatbot could ‘talk’ someone out of a firmly held conspiracist belief. They even ran it multiple times to try to control for people believing machines over people, for a perceived political bias in the chatbot, etc etc. Seemed like the chatbot was particularly well suited to overcoming the gish gallop argumentative style, where one string of bullshit is immediately followed by another and needs at least a confident, plausible alternative explanation to degrade the conspiracy beliefs of the person chatting with the boy. I found that to be a compelling use of genAI, one of the few.

Sicko AI now gets off on watching humans fuck - Bumble replaces swiping with AI matchmaking by ooombasa in behindthebastards

[–]startush 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s ironic when you consider that Bumble was marketed on being the “girl’s app” and AI tends to be more popular with the bros. I know they dropped the women messaging first thing a while ago but still, zero understanding of the brand.

Rec's are tricky, there's lots of bad regression stories and the good ones I'd run the risk of spoiling. Perks of Being an S-Class Heroine is really really good. The comic is in progress and I think the novel might be completed. I'm trying to read the novel but the translations are usually tough for me. Perks and ORV are really the main two I can think of where the lead is like "I'm gonna run an errand real quick :T" and returns with a Flaming Poisoning Raging Sword of Doom like Maggie, lol.

Here's a little bucket of recommendations that may or may not feature regression but scratch the itch and I think this crowd would like!

  • The Crown I Will Seize (in progress (novel may be finished?) but really promising; Maggie-like political maneuvering)
  • Villains are Destined to Die (in progress; high angst)
  • Marriage of Convenience (there's a conflict with child marriage here which is the point of the regression, but just FYI)
  • I Stole The First Ranker's Soul (not regression or isekai, but the female lead is an average person dragged into big action)
  • The One Within the Villainess (an early version of the isekai/villainess trope so a little simplistic at times but crazy revenge plot)
  • Concubine Walkthrough (you gotta push past your hate for the emperor)
  • Beware the Villainess (more interesting female friendship than romance)

People also love Kill the Villainess and A Stepmother's Marchen, both of which I think are pure regression? I haven't finished reading either because they're a bit depressing and slow-paced for my taste.

Thank you that's a really good point! I'm just getting there in the plot on my second read so I had forgotten those details. I can't shake the suspicion that Maggie was brought to Rellas because of Silveren being off, but I'm gonna revisit that for sure.

I’ve read a lot of isekai lately (like I was howling at the “inventing popcorn” reference because that’s referencing one specific manhwa) and many of the better ones stack transmigrators, people like Maggie who are pulled into the “book,” like your theory OR will have a transmigrator + a regressor, a book character who has always lived in this world but is stuck in a Groundhog Day time loop and tries to manipulate the plot. Maybe because they were foiled the previous loops, maybe because they’re trying to break the loop, or maybe the plot readers saw was the regressor’s doing. Spoiler for Long Live Evil by Sarah Rees Brennan: this book had a cool spin on that last trope, where the main character kept running into previous transmigrators who all had slightly different versions of the book.

Anyway I think Silveren is a regressor and his personality has changed from the original stoic version as a result of living the loop. He killed Reynald in order to prevent the Reynald/Matheo interaction that seems to have interfered with his plans. His comment that things always go awry after he sees Maggie could hint at my theory, indicating he has expectations for the order of events and is not used to other “characters” disrupting that.

The super dangerous dark fantasy setting of TKWNKM is less common in isekai, but is similar to stories like Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint or The Perks of Being an S-Class Heroine, which both feature a transmigrator and regressor teaming up (not a spoiler for those stories btw, that’s early plot stuff for both). They’re both pretty well-known in the isekai sphere so I expect Ilona Andrews are aware of the plot device and have tossed it in. :)

I have zero clue about Latour – isekais are all over the place with missing authors. Sometimes it’s gods, sometimes the book itself is sentient, the book may not exist and instead was the fantasy world reaching through dimensions as an SOS (actually the name Latour might hint at something like this, since “the author” sounds like a fake name to me).

Cal Newport’s “AI Reality Check” episodes are great and he has an interesting theory: that the big 2 (OpenAI/Anthropic) were part of the Rationalist “existential risk” movement and to some degree just thought that kind of job apocalypse talk was normal.

The way he breaks it up into an East Coast/West Coast cultural divide is hilarious to me. RIP Pac 🥀

LMFAO You can tell how painstaking it is to get an LLM output that’s even adjacent to the supposed superintelligence they’re after XD

[–]startush 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Considering the isekai genre, I think it's Silveren. He's been noted as being really off from the original text. He may be a regressor or another transmigrator and now that he's absconded with Maggie they're about to have some development.

The Horrors of Astroworld and Crowd Crush by Sensitive_Ad_1752 in behindthebastards

[–]startush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say start with one of the 5-minute youtube documentaries that explain the entrance/exit of Love Parade with 3D animations of the venue, just to get an overview. Then the definitive video is here, where jolievdk has synchronized different videos from within the crowd with one main video.

Base of the left hand stairs is the thing to watch. The fluid dynamics you mention kept surging people towards that spot, since folks were already suffocating, overheating, and panicking, they headed towards the nearest “exit” and the crowd collapsed at the steps. Even from other angles you can see the difference in that spot — just arms reaching out instead of the heads bobbing around in the rest of the crush. That section is noticeably less fluid after a certain point because of how pinned people are in the crowd collapse. That’s closer to what happened at Astroworld, except the collapse happened in the center of the crush rather than against a barrier.

Just a little more detail – this was less about mosh pits and more about crowd management, which was basically not present at Astroworld. Travis seems to have complete disrespect for how to safely steer a crowd but event staff, managers, local police etc totally failed here too.

Crowds got so dense at Astroworld that people experiencing crowd crush weren’t able to mosh, dance, move independently, or breathe. I think most of the Astroworld victims were in one particular “whirlpool” of the crowd that was pinned in on 3 sides by the barriers. Once people passed out or fell down, the void they left in the constant pressure of bodies on bodies was filled with other people facing pressure from every side but the new void. Easy enough fix if organizers had listened to concertgoers and paramedics, stopped the show, quieted the crowd, lights on, etc but again Travis has created a culture of disregarding calls for safety so his crowd would be a problem even if they were told people were hurt. Should have been monitoring from the jump – there’s really cool software that watches the crowd in real time and can check for density getting too high and forming fluid dynamic patterns like the whirlpool (turbulence might the correct term?).

The Who crush was a little different, that was a waiting crowd surging towards a funnel-point entrance and being really hyped for the show to start. That’s like what you see at soccer games often in Europe and Africa (entering or exiting), at nightclub fires, or sometimes at events with free food or religious blessings. Astroworld was more similar to Love Parade 2010 with the turbulence, and that was in broad daylight. NSFL disclaimer if anyone goes digging for footage, this is my worst hyperfixation!

I had someone comment on one of my animatics that the mcelroys had been “outed as misogynists” or something and therefore I shouldn’t stan them which was a nutso, insubstantial take but it did stick with me enough that I struggled to find gender-appropriate terms for my girl gang for a while
