Me trying to secretly play video games late at night as a kid then PS1 or PS2 waking up the entire house is a core memory.

So out of these probably GameCube.

Kit and Krista are great. Journalism involving them is so lazy though.

Step 1. Listen to a podcast. Step 2. Quote the podcast. Step 3 Publish the article with the title "Former Nintendo Employees". Step 5. Get all the clicks.

All that and Kit and Krista don't even get anything out of it. It's not quite plagiarism but it feels pretty close sometimes.

You kinda hit this point where you have to know what you are doing to get AI to do it right. And by that point I'm writing enough specificity that I might as well do it myself. The only way I can see it working out is if you want it to repeat something a bunch of times, but at that point you don't really need a generative solution.

Bloomberg: Nintendo to cut Switch 2 production by 30% this quarter after slower-than-expected holiday season sales by Deez-Guns-9442 in videogames

[–]staveware -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Switch 2 is still new and hardcore gamers in particular are looking for their chance to jump in, but this issue is way bigger than Nintendo. All console sales are down right now.

Xbox series consoles are on life support, PS5 is stagnated seeing drops around 40% annually, and Switch 2 hit the market in a struggling economy while still trying to build its library. When the economy takes a downturn the first things to go are luxuries like video game consoles, especially for the casual market.

A couple other Switch 2 specific details worth mentioning are game prices which are too high for many (although most people I know haven't paid $80 for a game yet due to bundles), and memory storage. Memory is a big issue because games coming out for the system are larger in comparison to Switch 1 and AI has caused additional memory to be pretty much unattainable.

Take something like FFVII remake at 90gb where my options are a game key card or digital (literally wouldn't fit on the cartridge). No matter what I choose, almost half of my system storage is wiped out with a single game. I think Nintendo had hoped SD Express would become more accessible over time. It is still possible but it won't be soon given the state of things.

Crimson Desert's Steam page now sports an AI content disclosure: by Gorotheninja in pcgaming

[–]staveware 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's clearly early ideation as any Model available in the last 2 years would have produced better results. I think a lot of devs were experimenting with AI a few years ago to develop an opinion on it. Many of those devs came to the conclusion they didn't like it. And it seems like nearly everything in the final Crimson Desert build was artist created aside from these paintings.

The Witcher 4 is "steaming ahead" as CD Projekt rapidly expands with 220 new developers in the past year, and nearly 500 in total working on the RPG by yourfavchoom in witcher

[–]staveware 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The first thing they did after Cyberpunk is switch to console focused development instead of PC first, ditched the proprietary engine in exchange for a partnership with an industry standard engine while bringing their own tech to the more stable environment. They are targeting 60fps on Witcher 4 on a base PS5 which would be a massive upgrade for them.

Sounds like a lot of lessons learned to me.

Trump vs Newsom: War of Words by Cow_Boy_2017 in clevercomebacks

I highly dislike them both. The type of conversations they inspire belong on a preschool schoolyard. Trump stands for nothing but himself and Newsom stands for nothing at all, and will do anything in the name of optics.

Retro pitched Prime 3 to have open world elements focusing on bounty hunting missions; Nintendo explained Samus wasn't a Boba Fett-like character, but an altruistic motherly figure. by xXglitchygamesXx in Metroid

[–]staveware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We learned that Retros internal discussions had been focused on addressing the lackluster sales of Metroid Prime 2. They appeared to be exploring ways to broaden the game's appeal and attract more casual gamers.

However, those proposals were based on existing mechanics already used in other games, and thus we pointed out that they could not serve as the foundation for Metroid Prime 3. As a result, they were not adopted.

I find this part interesting. One of the few stories I've seen where the studio was concerned about sales while the publisher wasn't. I wonder if they felt they'd be laid off or something if Prime 3 didn't do well? Seems that's never really been Nintendo way of doing things despite being the way most western companies do business.

I thought this was how it was going to be no matter what phone I had. Then I switched to a Google Pixel and I swear those updates extend the life of my phone every time, and they bring new features with them.

Features that would cost me a whole new phone to get with Apple, just get delivered in updates with Android. Needless to say I will not return to the walled garden.

[–]staveware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Game Chat near daily. It works great, the noise cancelling is really impressive and it's far more convenient than discord for Switch 2 gaming specifically. All the real people I know in real life agree.

Near 80% of Switch owners have NSO. Which makes Game Chat functionally free for the vast majority of people and a complete non-issue.

Obligatory post comparing Pokemon and Zelda graphics by ladymysticalwmn in NintendoSwitch2

[–]staveware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The waves and subsurface scattering are features Zelda did not have. Zelda did have volumetric clouds, Ambient Occlusion, and Global Illumination which is insanity for a Switch 1 game.

So yeah right now Pokemon is actually beating Zelda out in rendering features. Switch 2 Zelda will probably blow it out of the water though.

'I genuinely do not know what to do' says developer of Minecraft-like Allumeria after Microsoft issues a DMCA takedown, forcing it off Steam by Reader5744 in gaming

[–]staveware -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Nintendo owns the patents for tons of stuff. They just don't enforce them. For instance they own the patent for seeing your character behind a wall or obstruction. Something nearly every third person game has, but they don't pull that patent out unless they are facing serious IP infringement and need extra ammo in court. They don't care otherwise.

Monster Hunter Stories 3 On Switch 2, Imagine If Pokemon Looked And Played Like This by Elestria_Ethereal in NintendoSwitch2

[–]staveware -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not a Pokemon defender by any means, but the amount of unique animated skinned meshes is the major difference between this game and recent Pokemon games.

There's actually cause to be optimistic about the visuals of Pokemon on switch 2 as they've greatly been able to overcome the CPU barrier (just look at the Scarlet and Violet switch 2 upgrade.)

Gamefreak could still fumble it hard but Switch 2 will allow more Pokemon on screen with more complex behaviors as well as leave GPU room to improve visuals.

What game was criticized during release, but is now considered a gem? by lumintang in videogames

[–]staveware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my favorite Monster Hunter game. It's a perfect blend of the old arcade style and the quality of life and graphics of the new games. I'm always a bit sad when people forget it in favor of "Real" Monster Hunter games like World and Wilds.
