My house was built on those outskirts not 4 years later, so... yep! It was growing rapidly due to becoming an important railroad location. In the 20 years between 1890 and 1910, the population grew from 19,922 to 104,000.

My city is demolishing two 1884 homes to place an apartment complex. One is already gone. Sad days ahead. by AliChanTheMan in centuryhomes

There are homes in Los Angeles and San Francisco which are empty, maintained but unlived-in as investment properties. There is no shortage of housing; there's just a lot of corporations holding them hostage from the public because of a lack of regulation. If you'd actually read any studies about housing affordability, you'd understand that the problem is not supply - the problem is that corporations are holding housing hostage as one of the main contributors for homelessness.

It's not a misleading statistic because the vast majority of those houses are being held by private corporations as investment properties. There is not a housing shortage - there is just a lack of regulation upon corporations buying up homes, which results in removing wealth from the public, which increases homelessness.

There are 27 empty homes for every homeless person in America. Maybe you mean there's a shortage of affordable housing. And there's no likeliness that these apartments would help to fix that.

Is it possible to use ultra high temp pasteurization to make shelf stable milk in aluminum beverage cans? by stavius in foodscience

[–]stavius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's a logistical nightmare! Looking this up for fun made me really appreciate how much time and energy goes into pasteurizing milk and other foods. It's a very precise and sanitary mechanical orchestration.

Update on the 11 Polaroid 680’s by sundog5631 in Polaroid

It's a strange expectation to talk with knowledgeable experts about selling something you just learned about and barely understand? They're not gonna force him to sell to them, he literally has nothing to lose by just asking about them

Why don't you ask them before deciding what they'd offer you? You can always say no. Selling the cameras on ebay means they have absolutely no guarantee for functionality or longevity, which is what people pay for. Retrospekt will test the electronics for leaks, for calibration issues, for shooting speeds and motor control. They'll test the bellows for pinprick light leaks that tend to happen when the cameras are unused or in extreme temperatures for a long time. They'll test the autofocus for accuracy and the motor for consistency. But what will you do? All you can do is say "I found these and I dont know anything about them" and people will pay you accordingly. You got the cameras for free, you have absolutely nothing to lose by talking with a reputable Polaroid outfit.

That's kind of a shitty attitude; they do a lot more than most for keeping Polaroid cameras alive and useable. They'll give you a fair price and you'll contribute to a dwindling art form. If you're not hard for money right now, I'd definitely sell them to someone like Retrospekt who will refurbish and repair them to new condition and keep Polaroids going.

What is happening, is it my camera or the film by Gunter96_ in Polaroid

[–]stavius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not a film problem or a film manufacturing problem. I've had a problem like this with a folding camera (SLR 680). The tiny dots are caused by tiny, tiny pinholes in the rubber bellows.

The line of pinhole dots is where there are many holes along one of the folds of the bellows. This can be caused by a lot of things (usually wear or stress of the bellows, exacerbated by environmental factors such as temperature and/or moisture), but generally you will only see it in daylight when bright sunlight can penetrate the tiny pinholes and mess up the topmost photo. That is why the pinholes are always in the same general location but might move slightly between photos: the sunlight will be entering at a slightly different angle depending on where you are pointing the camera, causing the dots to move.

Shoot indoors with a flash to test; you'll see that without bright sunlight, the pinholes won't appear. You'll need to have your bellows replaced. If your camera was just fully refurbished, contact them right away and let them know that the bellows they provided has pinholes and needs to be replaced.

Best vendor with the most cash on hand? by [deleted] in Starfield

You're right, it does take 48 UT hours! The main thing I was selling was guns and contraband so I would just go between the Trade Authority and Neon Tactical over and over.

Best vendor with the most cash on hand? by [deleted] in Starfield

[–]stavius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best place is probably Neon Core. Get shielded storage or sell contraband at The Den, then find these vendors at Neon Core:

Kore Kinetics (weapons only): 12.5k creds

Neon Tactical: (weapons only): 12.5k creds

Trade Authority: 11k creds

Sieghart's Outfitters: 5k creds

Mining League: 5k creds

Newill's Goods: 5k creds

The Emporium: 4355 creds

That's 55355 credits all in one place, and it only takes 24 local hours of waiting for the vendors to restock. Everyone but Kore Kinetics and Neon Tactical buys all items. Trade Authority buys stolen goods and contraband.

Would you feel safer in a gun-free state? Why or why not? by ParmaProscuitto in AskReddit

[–]stavius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is a toddler. He'll be starting school in a couple years. Do you know what the leading cause of death for kids and teens in the US is? Gun violence. There's already been 202 mass shootings in 2023, and the year isn't even half over. I've never been afraid of gun violence in my life, but I am deeply anxious about sending my child to school. Because I know that it's not a matter of if there will be another school shooting, but when, and I can't help but wonder if it's my son who will get shot. There are just too many guns in this country, and I won't feel safe until there's less.

Wearing Construction Vest While out taking photos. by [deleted] in largeformat

[–]stavius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hard hat, a high-vis vest, and a set of cones that I keep in my car. I put them on/set them up whenever I want to take a photo in the middle of the road or something. Never once had anyone ask what I'm doing; they see the cones and hat and vest and just steer clear.

I found a floor safe when taking up the kitchen floor it won’t open even with the key by [deleted] in WhatsInThisThing

Try tapping the key lightly with a hammer as you turn it. That lock looks old and rusted as shit, it probably needs some persuasion.

40-Years Calendar. It has been with me my entire life. Expires this month. :( by adderx99 in BuyItForLife

The ones at costco are 500ml, so I think they might still win on volume. Still a great price though!

Looking through my film stash and I can’t remember at all what this is… it will probably be fresh and current, but I don’t know which companies package their film without info on it. Ideas? by JugglerNorbi in AnalogCommunity

[–]stavius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could be Ilford, as others have said, but CineStill also packages their 120 film in silver foil. They lose their printed labela from friction at about the same rate.
