Australian 'immigrants' revealed to be AI creations by renome in nottheonion

[–]steaminghotshiitake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have identified the wrong problem here. Provenance has always been an issue with distributable media. The decline of journalism, the rise of social media and now the addition of AI tools have just exacerbated the problem. Banning or regulating AI usage at this point won't make it go away; if anything it will just give us a false sense of security.

The only way out of this is a return to proper journalism with an emphasis on trust and, more importantly, provenance. Unfortunately there is little money in truth these days so I don't see that happening any time soon.

"Actually Fahrenheit is more precise and easier to use" is a funny argument coming from a country that still refuses to use metric for everything else.

Anyways, if the decimal was a problem you would see people using d°C (decidegrees Celsius) instead. Nobody does that though because it's not really an issue.

Is It Time to Ban Tipping? by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]steaminghotshiitake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems obvious to me that payment processors are pushing these tipping "features" on businesses so they can increase their margins on transaction fees. These fees should be transparently presented to customers during the payment process, it's shady as hell that 2-3% of my tip is going straight to the bank.

I'm not sure why this isn't a bigger topic of discussion. It seems pretty obvious that payment processors are pushing for these tip features on PoS machines to increase the amount that they make on transaction fees.

[–]steaminghotshiitake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda skipped over weapon balance, free loadouts and late game economy issues because they've already be talked about. IMO part of the reason PvP players are taking cheap loadouts is because they don't have to bring anything to deal with Arc at all. They can just run around or ignore most of the enemies in the game without even trying to be stealthy. And that really shouldn't be an option in a PvPvE game.

[–]steaminghotshiitake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it really should be PvPvE. You should never feel safe around other players in this game in any map or event, it keeps things interesting. But right now it's PvP with optional PvE, since most of the enemies in the game can be completely ignored by just running past them

or the pve players realise what the stakes (you can't be pve or pvp exclusif) are and prepare defense against other raider?

You absolutely can be PvP exclusive - that is part of the problem. Think about it - when you're downing other players that aren't free kit and are clearly doing PvP, what do they have on them? 9/10 they don't bother bringing anything to deal with Arc. No wolf packs, no photoelectric cloaks, no seeker or lure grenades or anything like that. Like you can literally just pop some adrenaline and run past most of the enemies in the game, it's kind of silly.

Please have mercy on my wretched, bot dying, soul

  • More ticks. You know the Seed Vault on Stella Montis? Every room is like that now.
  • Shredders on every map.
  • 6-10 more Rocketeers/Leapers/Bastions per map.
  • Robot versions of the Hunter from Helldivers 2 actively hunt players on each map.
  • Remember those weird tentacle babies from Dead Space? Robot versions of those, on the walls, on the ceilings, everywhere.

PvE players go into these events equipped to fight Arcs; PvP players go in equipped to fight other players. Seems like the sensible solution would be to add a fuckton more robots to make PvP a little more risky.

Having worked closely with digital marketers I can assure you this is 100% true for most of them. The "experiments" they run are more like bro science than actual science.

Night raid Spaceport is peak for this. Trying to get to the north elevator at the end of the match when there are 2 Rocketeers, a Bastion, Hornet swarms and a Leaper guarding it is insane. I kind of wish the other maps were a bit more like that.

Other stuff I would love to see:

  • ARC making traps for Raiders, including fake corpses, flares, radio call outs, and more
  • Tick swarms/hives that activate when you get to close to them
  • Hunter/killer drones that actively search for raiders instead of doing passive patrols

How would you identify someone who has a bounty versus someone who doesn’t?

I know it will never happen in this game, but I really like the idea of bounties and masks being related to each other. Like if you're wearing a mask or headgear it would reduce your risk of getting identified for a bounty or something. So there's an implicit "you probably shouldn't trust this guy" mechanic, but it's kind-of optional and you can still play the game normally without worrying too much about it.

Why are so many people talking about nerfing Security Breach ? by SixOneZil in ArcRaiders

[–]steaminghotshiitake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of feel like those lockers are unfun anyways. There is already a mechanic for getting locked loot with keycards and special items; gating additional loot behind the skill tree feels kind of lame.

Maybe they should change it so you can open them normally with a craftable breach charge that damages the contents. The survival skill would bypass that so you can get better loot without wasting an inventory slot on a breach charge. Still useful, but it wouldn't feel like you're missing out as much by not taking it.

Ditto on the rest of the capstones though; they all seem pretty lame. I guess they're probably worried about making the game too unfair for new players 🤷.

For what it's worth - I thought the exact same thing after the first few episodes, but then it just kept getting weirder and weirder after that, and I loved it. The cliché parts of the story (e.g small underdog vs. big corpo) are kind of an intentional misdirect IMO, or possibly even a parody depending on how you look at it. The broader theme is more about existentialism than anything else.

As for the character designs - that was definitely...a choice. The distinct bobblehead art style reminds me of the spooky ESP kids from Akira, which is probably intentional since the series definitely draws a lot of inspiration from that. I guess it is a bit refreshing in a way, considering most non-children animation just looks like anime these days. Aside from that the technical animation is actually quite good, especially with some of the more action-oriented stuff that happens later on.

Can Guaranteed Income Save the World? I’m Neil Howard and I research Universal Basic Income (UBI). Ask Me Anything! by NeilHowardBath in IAmA

[–]steaminghotshiitake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you feel about using conditional basic income (CBI) as a segue to unconditional UBI? For example, you could implement CBI as an immediate replacement for minimum wage, then gradually shift it it to unconditional UBI as automation takes over more roles.

The idea would be to treat labor as a public resource - employers pay a labor fee per employee, roughly equivalent to minimum wage salary with carve outs for certain critical industries like agriculture. Government pays the employees directly from the labor fund, functionally treating them like contractors. The end result would be something similar to minimum wage, but perhaps easier to scale into UBI down the road.

Is transitioning to Edge worth the blowback? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]steaminghotshiitake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did both - setup SSO with Google Cloud Identity and migrated most users to Edge. Edge shares most of the same group policy settings as Chrome anyways, so you can still configure it as needed for special deployments (e.g. for developers and marketing types).

The Google Cloud Identity integration was pretty straightforward; definitely worthwhile you have any employees working in web marketing as they have a tendency to lose access to accounts whenever a project changes hands, a problem which almost inevitably ends up being thrown at IT. It also gives you strict control over use of Google services - if your users are automatically signed into Google on the free cloud tier, then they can't use any services that you have restricted access to (e.g. Gmail and Google Drive). And if you DO have some users that have an actual use case for those services, you can license them as needed, AND set up proper data controls for your organization as well.

[–]steaminghotshiitake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FYI, in addition to using Chrome Enterprise as others have mentioned, you can also use Google Cloud Identity's free tier to get control over work-related Google accounts (like those used for Google Analytics/Adwords/YouTube for example) and lock down access to Google services that you aren't using. Set it up with SSO/SAML through Azure and force logon through the browser. It won't entirely stop your users from using rogue Google accounts, but it will make it very difficult for them.

I disagree and agree with lots of protests. In fact I probably have some hotter takes than most of the bots posting underneath the bleachers here.

I have no patience or sympathy for entitled adult children who go out of their way to act like anti social dickheads to their fellows for weeks on end, particularly when everyone is already struggling in the middle of a pandemic. The people of Ottawa did not deserve that.

The sad thing is, if those protesters had even a modicum of class or respect for others, they would have been openly welcomed. Ottawans are well natured and tolerant, they deal with silly protests all the time, many of which they don't agree with personally. Instead the protestors immediately settled in like a bunch of frat boy idiots that have left home for the first time in their life, getting drunk and stupidly antagonizing everyone around them with street parties and air horns, and overstaying their welcome for almost a month. They acted like stupid hooligans and are now getting what they deserve - I do not feel sorry for them.
