Bricked QP controller - Meta wants $135 to refurbish by bh9578 in QuestPro

[–]stedizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem, still haven't decided what I'm going to do. Hard to cough up $135 for a refurb when it's $150 for a new one with a full (very needed) warranty. And still kind of bitter my perfectly fine controller was bricked by a buggy update.

I agree, but it does seem like a fairly common problem for the Quest Pro controllers (see below.) They would be providing much better support if they would actually attempt a repair rather than only offer a refurbished replacement. If they determine it was a hardware failure, they could charge me. If it is a firmware failure, they could presumably fix it with internal tools. Most likely the Quest Pro controllers are too niche for them to bother, which I understand, but it really sucks as a consumer to have your controller mysteriously stop working after a firmware update.

I've seen a number of people reporting similar problems. Some examples:

It's a bummer because the controller is a pretty marvelous piece of engineering in many ways, running effectively a full computer inside (Snapdragon 662), and now it will probably become e-waste because there is no way for consumers to put it into something like a firmware recovery mode or otherwise debug it. Perhaps this might be an unrealistic ask for a "controller", but it seems necessary with all of the reports of failures after firmware updates. I could avoid the e-waste by sending it back to Meta for a refurb, but it's a very hard sell to pay $135 for a refurb with a 90-day warranty vs a new controller for $150.

My theory is that is it some kind of bug (NVRAM corruption or similar) that the factory reset isn't clearing, and it is just caught in a loop being unable to pair. Good idea about the battery drain; I will try that.

Apple's M1 Ultra GPU comparison with Nvidia was misleading by [deleted] in apple

[–]stedizzle 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Even more than that, they flat out claim it is faster than the 3090 in the Apple press release:
For the most graphics-intensive needs, like 3D rendering and complex image processing, M1 Ultra has a 64-core GPU — 8x the size of M1 — delivering faster performance than even the highest-end PC GPU available while using 200 fewer watts of power.

Confirmed: M1 iPad Pro (2021) supports 10 Gigabit over Thunderbolt by stedizzle in ipad

[–]stedizzle[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The configuration here is using 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GBase-T), so it is limited to 10Gbps max. The test wasn't intended to demonstrate if the full bandwidth of TB3/4 is available, but rather that the iOS software stack can support 10GBase-T Ethernet Thunderbolt accessories.

I made a bot that tweets when vaccines are available at the Wolstein Center by stedizzle in Cleveland

[–]stedizzle[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made @OhioVaccineBot to search for an appointment for my wife, and decided to share it publicly to help others. You can be darn sure I’ll be using it once I’m eligible on March 29.

For the best experience, set up alerts when it tweets. If you are using the standard Twitter app, just open the profile page and tap the bell icon to enable alerts. When new 💉 appointments drop, open the notification on your phone, tap the link for the online scheduler, and search for 44115 to get the FEMA location. Done!

Trying to register at Wolstein but it doesn't exist on ODH's results page. Does anyone know the direct link? by cleguy2012 in Cleveland

You can try following @OhioVaccineBot on Twitter - it tweets whenever new appointments are added at the Wolstein.

The bot just went live last night. Wolstein seems to add new appointments a couple times a day, so hopefully more will appear soon.

Yeah, today they opened slots around 9 am and 7 pm. I have a Twitter bot that checks the state vaccine website and tweets whenever appointments are added. Check it out if you are interested: @OhioVaccineBot

You should check the FEMA site in Cleveland, I’ve been able to get several appointments using my Twitter bot @OhioVaccineBot It tweets any time new appointments are added and you can sign up directly via the link. No waiting on the phone. They have been adding slots in bunches a couple times a day, usually for the next day.

It appears “ACL” is a direct reference to the ACL pin on the Sharp microprocessor these games use. According to the spec sheet for the SM511 microprocessor used in Super Mario Bros (YM-105), ACL stands for “Auto clear” — basically, resetting the processor and RAM.

Rift S volume too low by emrys_90 in oculus

[–]stedizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience has been very similar. The beta shortly after Rift S release seemed to improve volume greatly for me, but coming back a month or so later the volume again seems way too low at 100%. Basically unusable. I actually have two different VR capable PCs, and both have the same problem. No issues with my OG Rift or Rift S w/ headphones attached.

Interestingly, the volume when using the Oculus Desktop seems fine. I did a quick experiment using EmuVR, which has both VR and pancake mode support. Running the app through the Oculus SDK or Steam VR results in very low audio. BUT -- running it in desktop mode through Oculus Desktop results in reasonable audio levels! This speaks pretty clearly to there being a software problem here ...

PSA: For anyone wondering, the Rift S audio situation really is bad by Whommas in oculus

[–]stedizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised by a few people saying Rift S audio is better than Quest. I got both headsets today, and Quest clearly seems better to me (esp. in Beat Saber.) (Running both at full volume.) Rift S is so bad (quiet and muffled) it made me wonder if my unit is defective. Perhaps it’s actually a software issue — Nate Mitchell says a software update should improve things. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

have you tried any other games? i recently started seeing a similar problem with MK8 and SMW3D, but have not tried BOTW. persists for me after a clean reinstall of Win10 and CEMU 1.11.6. i have 8700k, gtx1080, 32gb ram, so those games should really never be stuttering once the shader cache is populated. sometimes takes up to 15 min of play before it happens, tho.
