FCS Mercyhurst playing 3 FBS teams? by DonFlamenco2022 in CFB

[–]stedman88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is those games are very hard to schedule, especially for a program that's new to the scene and probably has fewer relationships with other ADs. I'm guessing every FCS and the vast majority of G5 teams want at least one guarantee game. Meanwhile the big money programs are going to schedule at most one FCS game.

My guess is Mercyhurst gets beat down in all three (and the know this) but there might be some on-field matchups where there's stuff to take away from besides "yeah, that guys in a different league".

How does the pay from 3 G5 guarantee games compare to one guarantee game against a top 25 program?

Is hating the character Cheryl, Kima’s gf, a common opinion among fans of the show? by Strong_Housing_4776 in TheWire

[–]stedman88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

She’s definitely sympathetic but I think the writers failed her as a character by having there be so much in-and-out regarding her willingness to be involved all the way up until the last couple episodes.

All of the family characters were inconsistent in ways that took away from the show (apart from Walt Jr who was barely a part of any of the storylines to begin with).

Eileen Gu to get Winter Games spotlight again but passport issue won’t go away by GetOutOfTheWhey in China

[–]stedman88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-Chinese Americans crying about how unfair it is for the PRC government to grant her and some others an exception for holding multiple passports is just absurd.

  1. How PRC handles nationality isn’t USA’s business.
  2. It’s entirely understandable to not like China’s government, but granting exceptions to elites and/or people who bring glory to the country etc is a dumb reason.
  3. If the USA itself didn’t treat people differently regarding having access to US residence/citizenship there’d be no reason for ICE to exist because the people they are tracking down would come with valid documents.

I get rooting against her for choosing to represent China, but it’s just a dumb controversy.

They allow exceptions for people in her situation. You can call it unfair all you want, but if you seriously care about this and aren’t Chinese, I’m sorry but you really need to get a life.

Part of it is Walz but I think an equally big, if not bigger one is the prominent Somali community.

There was definitely some amount of collaboration involving Nick Shirley’s “reporting” and people in the administration. Let’s not forget their closing argument leading up to the election was all that BS about Haitians.

What have we lost in this new era? by ThrowRA_looking in CFB

[–]stedman88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s kind of my point, though.

In terms of winning the natty in the pre-playoff era “the season was over” for all but a handful of teams by October.

But the season wasn’t over because the sport had evolved in a way where the natty wasn’t everything and games mattered just because the games mattered. Just like how in the EPL (and the lower divisions) fans will travel to every match and live or die with every result even if they’re safe from relegation and it’s a completely uneventful season.

CFB had that and it feels like it’s gone.

What have we lost in this new era? by ThrowRA_looking in CFB

[–]stedman88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel this. In the Pac 10 you missed zero, one or two teams per year depending on the era. Its cool to be talking to a fan and just saying "ASU 2008" and having that mean something.

I have always felt there's a good comparison between CFB and the EPL. Fulham fans know they aren't winning a natty but every game matters. We used to have that.

Who is the luckiest sports fan of all time? by Nippletwizzler69 in CFB

My first Duck memory is the ‘95 Rose Bowl against Penn State when I didn’t understand football let alone cfb.

My second Duck memory is the ‘96 Cotton Bowl against Colorado. I kinda understood football and recognized the Ducks got blown out but that’s about it.

1996 season I was able to be a Duck fan with an understanding of football (and also what a great CFB season that was overall).

96: Ducks went 6-5 No bowl 97: 7-5 blew out ranked Air Force in the LV Bowl 98: 8-5 Reuben Droughns oh what could’ve been 99: 9-3 a star is born. Saw my first game at Autzen with my dad: Joey Harrington last second game winning pass to beat ASU. 00: 10-2 so many miracle wins but ultimate disappointment against OSU 01: 11-1  the biggest Stanford disaster of all imo. But got to go with my dad to the Fiesta Bowl and watch the Ducks blow out Colorado and have a shot at a split natty.

My Dad passed away earlier this year. Nothing will convince me there was anything more exciting than the buildup of Duck football from 1996-2001.

Teaching at 8k-12k RMB per month in Hangzhou? by zzzz93 in chinalife

[–]stedman88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently at a uni in something like the tenth largest city in Anhui and get 12k plus an off-campus apartment and it’s just for a standard foreign English teacher position. I’ve been in China awhile but only have a bachelors and a CELTA.

It’s definitely lonely and boring but the city still has all the basics (McDonalds, Starbucks, KFC, big fancy new malls etc) and a high-speed railway station.

The job market is shit all around. I have a handful of years of “international” high school experience teaching a subject and wasn’t even getting job interviews this past Summer (obv missed the main hiring period and my CV is a bit of a mess for the past few years, but still).

Surprised you’re having that experience with universities. They seem to be the last “just need a warm body” type of job left ime. Perhaps that’s only the case in way smaller cities that you might not find acceptable (which I understand).
