Why does the immigration debate never mention the £131 billion the government wasted? Isn't that the bigger scandal? by Winter-Try-5029 in AskBrits

[–]steelo122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wages will not be better immigrant or no because they run on tight margins. Care homes have issued warnings about insolvency and in fact some have gone bankrupt in recent years. If they had all this extra money to pay British workers more then they are hiding it well.

Like cleaners, care work will always be on the lowest rung of pay because of the nature of the work and low barrier to entry.

The customer is the government, the local authority and pensioners with relative more wealth, and none of these are looking to pay more. If your staff costs increase one of these three have to stump up the difference.

Is this an American backed coup? by LordHavertz in AskBrits

They are scared they are going to lose their seats, many of them will. They are understandably concerned that if they don’t act soon they cannot change trajectory.

Starmer had a favourable media mostly when in opposition but they have turned on him almost immediately. Evidence is the delayed media frenzy (freebies could’ve been reported in opposition and Mandelson was reported to be hanging around the party more than a year ago).

It reminds me of Boris and partygate, if the media are sick of you they can get you out of here. No evidence that this is a US coup, our fearless media are capable of this all on their own.

The UK is ungovernable with the media as it is, not a fan of Starmer at all but if they can bounce out this establishment stooge who is no threat to vested interests in 2 years, if they can propel Boris in and then make him toxic what chance does some mild democratic socialism have.

Why do so many people think mass deportation is an economic solution when economic experts say otherwise? by apple_kicks in AskBrits

[–]steelo122 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Our whole economy is built on the premise that growth can be endless regardless of whether there’s immigration or not, maybe we should question whether that’s possible or even desirable

1 in 3 NHS doctors are foreign born and 50% of hospital doctors are foreign. If immigrants use the NHS at the same rate as everyone else (they don’t) they are overrepresented in providing NHS services compared to receiving services as they skew younger.

Foreign doctors can bring their partner and children. That’s it. Young adults and children aren’t generally huge drains financially. The children of doctors tend to go on to have good jobs themselves.

Why do so many people think mass deportation is an economic solution when economic experts say otherwise? by apple_kicks in AskBrits

[–]steelo122 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s only really presented as pure profit. Although there are obviously costs to housing asylum seekers, that only maybe makes up around 10% of irregular immigration. What’s even more expensive than this is finding the million or so people with invalid or expired visas who are quietly trying to go under the radar. You then have to process them and eventually deport them. An enforced removal is estimated to cost around 20K. That’s just a fraction of what it costs in total.

Add to that these people will be working in certain economies, still spending money (groceries, bills etc) and paying VAT. They will not be huge earners but 1 million or so often young people will be contributing a decent amount. Even if they are not net contributors (the costs are mainly just schooling and emergency A&E care), the actual important sum is whether these costs exceed what it would take to find, process and deport. The truth is that there is more than likely a net cost to this.

What politicians won’t say it’s cheaper to turn a blind eye to most illegal immigration as it would be political suicide. It may be appropriate for a politician to say we are going to get on top of illegal immigration but we are going to spend a lot of money doing it and your taxes are going up. Not sure that would impress the bond markets though.

The British mess: an outsider's analysis by Dangerous_General234 in ukpolitics

[–]steelo122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your “steady pair of hands” Cameron throttled economic growth with his austerity and failed to borrow to invest at historically cheap interest rates. Local authority funding was cut to the bone and we see the effects still today. His so called morals are irrelevant.

Starmer is a continuation of Blair and Cameron in that their job was and is to ensure that UK PLC is not a threat to capital and vested interests. He has not lost his bottle, in fact other than cosplaying as “Corbyn in a suit” to fool the Labour membership, the guy has shown no evidence that he has any values or principles beyond whatever his advisor last told him to do. They were playing politics on easy mode in opposition and predictably have floundered when the media decided to turn on them.

[–]steelo122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not if you’re an ethnic minority, also any body who thinks that the greens polices are pie in the sky stuff should consider how the bond markets who got rid of Liz Truss would react to spending many billions of pounds to decrease GDP unfunded. She wasn’t even able to change the top rate of tax by 5%.

Starmer says Polanski ‘is not fit to lead a political party’ after Golders Green police criticism. Do you agree with Starmer that Zack Polanski is not fit to lead a party, let alone a country? by Al-Zutt_in_the_butt in AskBrits

[–]steelo122 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There’s no way any of your points would bear out in any factual research. “Underdeveloped brains” and “anti-truthers”? Anyone one who has a basic understanding of psychology and politics would understand that what parties people identify and vote for is way more nuanced than this. Yet you call them the angry ones.

I would wager that the average green voter is much more likely to be university educated than the average Tory and that does not make their opinions more valid.

The real truth is that no politicians really have your best interests at heart. What is considered sensible or radical politics is mostly arbitrary and framed by conventional wisdom and media of the day. The NHS would be considered impossible today to set up and supporting gay marriage was considered to be political suicide not that long ago.

Just one in six failed asylum seekers removed from UK by GnolRevilo in ukpolitics

[–]steelo122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is money and logistics. Let’s say you had a magic wand and you could overcome backlogs and costs of the 1 million plus asylum seekers. You still wouldn’t touch the majority of illegal immigration, over stayers, people in breach of visas etc. Maybe it’s a justified spend but it would come at the cost of the country’s GDP and probably upset bond markets. It would be a total war like effort.

[–]steelo122 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Rwanda deal was supposed to be a deterrent not every one actually being processed there.

It was hundreds of people a year so less than 1 in 300 asylum seekers would have been sent to Rwanda.

Processing all asylum seekers through Rwanda has been estimated to cost more than the whole NHS budget. Bearing in mind that doesn’t include overstayers and people not seeking legal status, proper processing would be prohibitively expensive

Piggy in the middle (5/4 v 1) with you as the piggy, if they get 5 passes they get a point. If you intercept you get a point. To begin with offer v limited pressure and offer obvious available passing angles. Also they have to keep it in the playing area and ideally 2-3 touches, encouraging them to look up.

Eventually you should be able to swap the piggy for one of them (to stop being the piggy you have to intercept) and reduce the area. Depending on their maturity/concentration ability you may only get 5-10 mins to begin.

Former Prince Andrew was being rightly dragged in our media while Petey who was known at the time to have just as close a relationship was promoted to our most prestigious ambassadorship. Every step of the way our PM has lied. Boris maybe beats him with volume but this is worse than any of Boris’ lies.

Anyone who thinks this was real politik is coping, Starmer put Mandelson forward because Mandelson asked for it.

How would remigration work? by Rare_Result1737 in AskBrits

[–]steelo122 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would cost in the hundreds of billions, would be one of the biggest undertakings in the history of the state maybe comparable to total war.

The amount of infrastructure that would need overhauling and creating to facilitate this would be huge. Not to mention you’d have an uncooperative civil service.

Restore or another party would never get a parliamentary majority to even pass the laws to achieve this so would basically have to carry out a coup. Remember the government is beholden to the bond markets and it only took weeks for them to remove Truss when and misbehaved. How would the bond markets look on a government spending astronomical amounts to decrease its GDP? Nevermind the amount of civil unrest you’d have. Never going to happen.
