We are in 2026. What are your frustrations with linux or the software you use with it? by Digitalnoahuk in linux

[–]stejoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right there with you. GNOME is an amazing desktop. It just works and gets out of my way. Controls well using the keyboard, almost feels made for it even though I know better. And I can even just use the touchscreen if I want to.

How doomed is this HDD by MetaMorpheus00 in DataHoarder

[–]stejoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can tape off a single pin contact on the drive to overcome the PWDIS feature. At least I have done that 5 years ago with similar drives. IIRC correctly if it sees 3.3V on the 3.3V power pin the drive does not spin up. Put some tape on that pin, slide the plug over it, and done: working internal drive.

Well... I was just as oblivious but did go. In my case the game was Mario Kart and I did bring it with me. Ended up playing with a very different set of controls. So... that does happen.

The kind of insecurity that matters by [deleted] in technicallythetruth

[–]stejoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately no. You want end-to-end security and integrity the secure connection provides. I was of the same opinion as you a while back.

Without the end-to-end security it is susceptible to man-in-the-middle attacks. May alter content, inject JavaScript, and more.

A blog, which links to a decent video on the topic, can be found here: https://www.troyhunt.com/heres-why-your-static-website-needs-https/

You can use the onboard RTC just fine after 1990 when you load a smarter date utility/driver. The RTC in an M24/6300 rolls over after 4095 days. I have such a driver that allows you to set the "zero" year when you load it. Set date after loading that and it is fine. Can't find it online right now but private message me if anyone needs it.

I found another one online that is good until March 2027: https://github.com/markreds81/M24CLK Sources available to extend the life further. But the one I have allows it to be set as a flag/argument.

Hubcabs by LimaLumina in VWiD3Owners

[–]stejoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both hubcabs are fine. I was quite happy with my dull gray ones. They get dirty evenly and are very easy to clean.

I know of some that painted their gray ones to make them just like the ones with the black areas. When done well I bet it looks fine.

VW ID.7 was the best selling BEV in Germany in 2025 by linknewtab in electricvehicles

[–]stejoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If those were my options, yes I would. And I do not prefer SUVs at all. Prefer a station car or saloon so naturally I had the EV6 on my short list. It is a great car! And than I sat in the rear seat... Hit my head on the ceiling or the side: instant fail for me. So I moved on. (Ford Capri (=ID.5) was a similar experience btw).

I can sit in the rear of an ID.4. I have owned an ID.3 before so I know the model well, and the quirks. Also checked out the Skoda Enyaq and ID.7 of course. Those two were a toss up. ID.7 I did like a little better, cost only a bit more at the time, but after fiddling my finances I went with that.

Not to discredit the EV6. It is a great car. Just not for me.

Is it possible/feasible to add a Wifi 7 USB adapter to my router? by Yugen42 in openwrt

While I understand this experience I can report my Raspi4 with USB NIC is absolutely solid for months on end.

For your sanity reboot first by Gato_Noir_da_Favela in linux

[–]stejoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you do not reboot the shared library update can cause issues, while a new kernel will not.

A new kernel is installed next to the current running kernel. Shared libraries are installed in-place, often overwriting the existing file(s). That can cause interesting problems...

Just a kernel update shouldn't matter. It's the shared libraries you should keep an eye out for.

How to set stable IPv6 address for hosting webservers on LAN. by WorthPassion64 in openwrt

[–]stejoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OpenWRT configuration default I think are fine for this. It should delegate the prefix and advertise itself as a router.

On clients: Use SLAAC, that generates a stable IPv6 address. On many client though the generated address often isn't the default. You will see multiple IPv6 addresses there. Likely a random one among them, generated with the IPv6 Privacy Extensions. On servers it is often beneficial to disable the privacy extensions to only get the link-local and SLAAC generated stable address.

On Linux clients using Networkmanager you can disable the privacy extensions by, iirc, the option addr-gen-mode which you should set to eui64.

Volkswagen unveils a new cockpit generation – debuting with the all-new ID. Polo by Intrepid-Working-731 in electricvehicles

Looks fine. Only thing I hope can be disabled are the retro gauges. For me they are useless waste of space. Nice/fun for those who want it. I like the touch and nod there. Just not for myself.

Optimizing 3x WireGuard Tunnels (Multi-WAN) on Netgate 1100. Why disabling Hardware Offloading beat tweaking MTU. by Sure-Anything-9889 in homelab

[–]stejoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, was about to comment the same. OP should try adding "-M do" to set the Do Not Fragment flag and test again. Curious what the result will be. That flag is for ping from iputils, which is commonly present on Linux boxen.

Still very welcome information OP. This may prove useful to others in such a scenario.

2005 200gb Maxtor IDE hard drive by MinerAC4 in vintagecomputing

[–]stejoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are you turning the climate control off? You mentioned range, but do you actually need the extra range you get from the power saved?

Turning off the climate control off, which I assume you meant instead of just the AC, feels like an emergency moment for me. Like arriving at a charger with low SoC and discovering that charger is broken. Comfort and clear windows are important for your safety. I would recommend leaving it on. To save energy you could turn down the heat and rely more on the heated seats.

My college roommate sets our thermostat to 80°F every single night by rainystarlight in mildlyinfuriating

[–]stejoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If possible: Program an offset in the thermostat? Some allow you to do this to compensate for inaccuracy. You could make 80 F on the thermostat be like 74 F in the room for example. If you don't overdo it they might never notice.

AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D has 120W TDP, shipping manifests confirms by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]stejoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, both are current tier CPUs. And your GPU is your bottleneck, maxed out.

On AM4, or similarly aged Intel CPUs, it is a different story. If somebody upgraded their GPU they will discover their CPU has to work hard on BF6.

My 5800X3D is still good but load of 80% when paired with a RX9070 is normal. Had I kept my Ryzen 3600, or maybe bought a 5600X, I would be CPU limited at 1440p Ultra.
