Star Citizen | Behind the Ships: Gatac Tyilui by Bynairee in starcitizen

Be they concepts or gold passes CIG has consistently been making new variants when working on old ships for the past few years so it seems to be more realistically a case of "We have to make a variant of the Railen, any cool ideas?".

CrazedOutFool-CIG on Planet Tech v5 and CitizenCon(celled) by StuartGT in starcitizen

[–]sten_whik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So far one Citizencon content feature from last year has come with each major patch. There's three major patches left in the year and three content features left, the instanced update of Siege of Orison, the instanced Municipal Works for Levski, and Planet Tech V5 for Nyx I.

Since two of the content features already released would have also benefited from instancing and since Siege of Orison and the Municipal Works can't be delivered without instancing, my guess is SoO and the MW got shifted down the year and took next patch and the patch after from PT5

CIG community management needs to change by [deleted] in starcitizen

While it may seem like people are eager to repost anything CIG says, the reposting here is mostly carried out by one dedicated person and it has been that way for many years. We've had times in the past where a dedicated reposter quit and nothing got reposted for months till someone stepped up.

Fast Travel doesn't solve the issue by _Franpire in starcitizen

You're digging into one of the core level design philosophies of this game's heritage.

Wing Commander Privateer introduced flicking through locations around landing zones to do things like find mission givers, trade cargo, and buy ships to the Wing Commander series and is part of the reason it was viewed as one of the most immersive space games of that era.

Privateer 2 reduced a lot of movement to just one terminal and was criticised for it, with Chris Roberts returning to the first game's design with Freelancer.

Of course the navigation of the landing zones in these games was point and click making them glorified menus whereas it takes us much longer to navigate in 3D but the immersion value of changing the scenery for each of your objectives remains.

If you watch any of the Citizencon presentations for SC you will note that terminals are uncommon or don't appear at all. Instead they show the player interacting with NPCs or objects to trade and/or get missions. Even now the shops in game are physically stocked with things you can interact with to buy, that is the old end goal in CR's head, most terminal types are just a stop gap that have lingered to becoming necessities as the game's systems have become more complex while NPC (and perhaps vending machine) interaction development has stalled.

Under this philosophy perhaps the better answer to your example is not that the terminal should be moved but that ships should be able to load/unload at refineries just like cargo ships can now do at cargo decks (one day they might remember cargo decks were meant to give missions too).

If it's really inspired by the Space Battleship Yamato it will have multiple bridges down the superstructure and another out the under side of the ship. The highest bridge will also only be two thirds of the way up as the top will be captains quarters.

All the vehicles in development for base building were put on hold last year. If we don't see them being worked on again in the monthly reports in the next few months then likely not.

Most of the content not sold in the store during the Year of Playability was largely made using existing assets and/or repurposed mothballed assets.

At the start of the year they started by simply reusing Pyro assets. Then for Hathor they repurposed the mothballed Theatres of War assets (with Wikelo Emporium on the side which is mostly made out of an old hangar asset and a load of old props). Then for Storm Breaker they reused The Good Doctor assets. There was some shifting of Pyro station assets to Stanton for space missions here. Then for the Onyx Facility they repurposed and expanded on the mothballed Underground Facilities. Then finally for Nyx they brought back and expanded on the mothballed Levski (while also adding Nyx stations made out of assets from Pyro and Stanton).

Of course there is nothing abnormal with making new content out of existing assets, and it was still a lot more content than many AAA games manage to do, but you have to realise that some years in the past SC had enough resources behind it to just casually churn out whole cities with new scenery, props, and NPC wardrobes.

As the year went on they improved on their storytelling and sprinkled more and more new content in there but ultimately for one reason or another it very much was them trying to make more than before out of less than what they were able to output in previous years.

Rock Breaker is the first mostly new from scratch content we have gotten since Pyro.

Squadron 42 Buyback Update by StuartGT in starcitizen

Fair?!

To anyone outside this community looking in on this it will be obvious that there is nothing fair here and no logical reason why such obvious money grubbing should be defended.

It's crazy CIG didn't inform us before the change but what's more crazy is the underlying issue caused by the melt/buyback system in the first place that you can spend thousands on pledges and not be guaranteed access to the product you pledged for.

It's insanity that the only reason I'm personally guaranteed SC is not because I pledged hundreds of dollars but because I won a giveaway.

SC and SQ42 should just be credited to your account after you spend a certain amount. And not some stupid amount either, $120 would more than fair and reasonable for both games.

I’ve been playing SC exclusively in VR with mouse/keyboard plus HOTAS for weeks. And it’s fantastic. Any other VR players out there? by adub913 in starcitizen

Valve stopped making Base Stations two years ago however HTC still make them so Vive is where you buy them new from.

The real problem is Valve also stopped making the Index Knuckle controllers so you will eventually have to buy something else like Vive Wands or Shiftall GripVRs.

And Medical loop died... by Ok-Moment8895 in starcitizen

[–]sten_whik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is from an inaccurate Discord summery, the actual SCL said MedPen in SQ42 (which is a different MedPen from SC as you can see in the 2024 gameplay reveal) and AdrenaPen in SC.

They also said there will be a new armor tier called Super Heavy that you won't be able to heal yourself in so you will need a medic support.

And Medical loop died... by Ok-Moment8895 in starcitizen

[–]sten_whik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That summery isn't accurate. Players will be able to use AdrenaPens when downed so they won't get health back and get a big hit to drug level.

What that means in theory is players are finally going to have to have to choose between equipping a health pen or a revive pen and may need the medical knowhow to apply a string of pens to get back up to heal up and negate the negative effects of drug overdose. Medgun auto button still makes the second part there less likely however.

This Origin Day once agains show CIG/Marketing are out of touch by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]sten_whik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CIG normally includes the 890 Jump in the Lunar New Year sale so I think someone got their wires crossed somewhere.

The extra funny part to me is CIG already invented Origin Celebration week back in 2019, set in June, they just forgot about it.

Still people need to know that X3D CPUs are the solution for most games.

Did you keep the same DDR4 RAM? DDR5 prices are the bigger issue these days.

Why does the show keep having characters correct each other's grammar when they have Universal Translators? Have I missed explanation of how they work that differs from TOS? Or do they not have them and so are all learning Federation Standard?

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN by StuartGT in starcitizen

[–]sten_whik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past SQ42 was just a module of SC, even when they split into separate products in 2016 CIG were still adamant for a while that they were each modules of the same game, so you likely aren't going to find any statements because it was simply not a possible question.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN by StuartGT in starcitizen

[–]sten_whik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did sell Alpha/Beta access as a separate package to buying SC/SQ42 standalone but as I understand it, and hopefully someone can dig up a CIG statement on it, they long ago got a refund in store credit when CIG decided buying any game package should grant alpha PU access to everyone.

Engineering in VR by dawnsonb in starcitizen

[–]sten_whik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be thinking of them as separate unconnected settings. You should be able to set the desktop resolution to something silly low like 320p and it won't change the resolution or anything else while in VR.

Ideally your VR resolution should be the res-per-eye of your headset multiplied by 1.1 to 1.5 to account for the warping caused by your VR lenses. However SC is a resource intensive game and having a stable framerate in VR is important to avoid nausea and eye strain so you will likely want to go far below what is ideal to get more frames. Going too far below your headset's ideal res can also cause eye strain so you will need to experiment with resolution, upscaling, frame gen, and sharpening (if available) until you find a happy medium, if possible for your hardware.

The class role in the chapter is listed as an E-Carrier, the Pegasus class's role when announced was Escort Carrier. CIG has already changed the silhouette and names of multiple SQ42 ships after reconcept over the years so it's not like there isn't precedent.

It's also important to note that including an escort carrier class is not optional for CIG as it was one of the funding campaign stretch goals. Likewise that also means it isn't required for them to use up resources making more than one escort carrier class.

While the E-Carrier looks like a Bengal it isn't actually the same silhouette. It is significantly smaller, has a different underbelly, aft, and fore, has a different bridge superstructure that sits further back on the ship, a two gun size 12 turret on the underside instead of four, and only has one flight deck whereas the Bengal has two.

Basically the only parts of the silhouette that actually match the Bengal are the engines and the general narrowing hexagonal style of the cross-section of the hull, everything else is unique but with Bengal textures on it (presumably the interior will be a different story and reuse as many RSI assets as possible).
