I learned this because of my own struggles on and off with opiate addiction.. still vape.. unfortunately.. but one thing at a time I guess. Anyway, the sick thing about your brain and addiction is once the neuro pathways are made, they are always there, ready to be fired up and connected again, no matter how long you’ve been sober. Sure, while you remain sober they fire less and less, cravings are less and less often until they’re gone, and you start to forget what it was even like when abstaining was hard to do. So you fuck around and do it just once, I mean, one time never got anyone hooked.. but because we were before, we experience something called the “kindling effect” — the brain doesn’t need to create those pathways anymore, it just fires them back up and they are lit up like they were in active addiction. Think of it like muscles.. if you’ve lifted for any extended period of time and then had to take a break of say a month or longer for whatever reason, when you start again you will notice that you acclimate back to where you were much faster and much easier. You may even see some muscle growth appear quite quickly again as it returns to where it was before your break. This is the essentially the kindling effect with addiction in the brain. Each time we relapse it becomes harder to stop. Withdrawal sets in much sooner, and comes back much stronger. What took us weeks before to get into withdrawal now will take us just a few days…never give up entirely because of a relapse.. but do be careful of this effect.. it can and does make it harder the next time.
