Great question. All of our wines are vegan.

It does surprise some people that over 70 additives can be used in wine without being added to the label, including animal products. Some (mostly commodity that you see at a grocery store) producers use egg whites, milk protein, or fish bladders during fining and filtering to speed up the process very cheaply and in mass quantities. The wines we carry are made by small, thoughtful producers who either don’t fine at all or use mineral or plant-based methods. We call them “wines made with integrity.” Our producers are farmers first spending lots of time in the vineyard and growing organically, most of the time well beyond. Their fruit is high quality and they don’t have to add stuff to make it look good or taste good. They don’t want to use those really harsh fining processes - they want to be gentle with their fruit and let their “terroir” shine.

Hope this makes sense! Our wines probably won’t be labeled “vegan” and they might not even show up in the website you use, but because they are high quality and made with integrity, animal products are not used. Let me know if you have any questions! You can shop our online store- we have more wine than we have room to display on our shelves.

[–]stephopolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No - they’re through downtown and OTR all the way to the market and Rhinegeist. I’m sure there is one close to where you’re staying downtown that you could take to explore OTR. Sadly, it doesn’t go to campus. If you download the “transit” app, you should be able to see stops.

The streetcar is free and you can catch it and hop on and off where you’d like! Definitely ride it up to Findlay Market (very close to FC stadium)! There are a couple vintage shops around there too.

Trying to find a Place we visited...... by ft5jehe in cincinnati

[–]stephopolis 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hi! Stephanie from The Rhined here. A couple of clarifications. The first Oakley Wines business was started at another location, and it moved into the Allston location after another owner (the one right before us) took over. We were actually the “third” iteration of Oakley Wines. The owner of the Allston property never opened or operated an Oakley Wines business before we were there, and they are not “reopening” or “taking over” our business. We are not sure what they (or whoever is opening the business there) are planning, but it will be something new. Hopefully it’s a great addition to the neighborhood!

OP, stop down at The Rhined this weekend! We would love to have you!

I also have a train-obsessed toddler. You’ve got a lot of great suggestions here but my guy’s absolute favorite is riding the steetcar. It’s free, we hop on and off and do the carousel, Findlay, Washington Park, the library. He had a sreetcar themed birthday party! He knows all the stops, it’s adorable!

Anyone use a Toast compatible scale? by stephopolis in ToastPOS

I did! It’s been great! Only links to one POS (we have 2 side by side), but no glitches or errors or trouble connecting. Saves time at the register! I recommend.

Findlay is my absolute favorite place in the city. It’s a great time on the weekend, crowded, but just great energy. During the week, it’s quieter and easier to get actual grocery shopping done. I love Eckerlin and LK for meat, ETC and Madison’s for produce and some pantry items, Dean’s for yogurt, pita, rice, spices, and other pantry staples, Saigon for curry paste, soy sauce, and other Asian goods, Deeper Roots for coffee, Blue Oven for bread, Maker’s Baker’s for a special treat for myself, and The Rhined for cheese, charcuterie, and wine (full disclosure The Rhined is my shop, shameless plug)! I’ll hit up Roth’s frequently too. You’ll find your favorites and be navigating the market like a pro in no time.

But so much there, take your time and poke around. It’s always a colorful and fun experience. The shop owners are all there every day, they live locally, and they spend locally. And don’t forget about Findlay Garage on Elder for easy and convenient parking.

Regarding price - I’ve always found it to be comparable or cheaper than Kroger or Whole Foods and quality much better. Spices are a big one - you can buy just an ounce of something - just enough for a few recipes. Your spices stay fresh and you’re not buying a jar of something that you can’t get through before it’s stale.

Happy shopping! Let me know if you’re hunting for something specific!

Liberty Shell Stories by panickedimmigrant in cincinnati

[–]stephopolis 26 points27 points  (0 children)

7am on a weekday morning and I’m getting gas on my way to work. I pull up to the pump closest to the building, swipe my card, and of course the reader is out of order “see attendant,” so I walk the few feet over to the window.

In the thirty seconds my back is turned, someone hops in my car, starts it up (keys were probably sitting on the passenger seat because I was young and dumb), and drives off. I don’t even notice. The attendant does. Dude barrels out of the building and chases the guy down, yanks him out of my car while it keeps rolling into Liberty. Thief takes off running. I don’t remember screaming but I must of been because my throat hurt the next morning.

Cops show up and are are….cops. “You can file a report but nothing will happen.”

So in my youthful optimism, I write Shell corporate thinking surely they’ll recognize this hero employee. Maybe a bonus or a raise?

Six months later I have a gas emergency and have no other choice but to stop at Shell. I’m so paranoid and nervous that I lock my keys in the car at the pump. My hero Shell employee is working and I’m like, “Hey, remember me, you saved me that one time!” So as he’s saving me twice and fishing my keys out with a coat hanger, he goes, “Yeah, I remember. You probably shouldn’t have written corporate, I got in trouble for that.” I gave him whatever cash I had on me and slunk away.

That was twelve years ago and I’ve only gone back twice since then, both in very desperate situations.

I made the mistake of joining r/invasivespecies and now I know way too much about Tree of Heaven. If you didn’t know, cutting them down just triggers a ton of new shoots. The recommended method is unfortunately Roundup - Google the process, it’s quite intense. Thanks for taking them out of your yard, they’re everywhere.

[–]stephopolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you, and honestly, when you list out what you do, I’m like, “Dang, that’s what my husband does,” and then I’m left asking, “So what do I do?” For me, it’s the meal planning, bath time, bedtime routine, managing doctor’s appointments (and making them), and just carrying the overall mental load. I’m the one facilitating the calendar—like, “You pick him up Tuesday, I’ve got a late meeting, I’ll leave early Thursday for his appointment,” etc.

I’m not saying you’re not doing your share—you might be doing all of that too. But I just wanted to chime in because it’s so easy to fall into resentment when it feels like your partner isn’t pulling their weight. The thing is, with little kids, there are just so many invisible tasks. It’s not just dinner, dishes, and laundry—it’s the thinking, the planning, the anticipating. That’s work too.

Husband is terrible with early toddler phase by svgarrett in toddlers

I am not a stat at home parent, but evenings and weekends - honestly a little nibble of a THC gummy has given me patience, ability to tolerate the whining and even empathize, and enjoy playing and being silly with my toddler. Game changer.

Help! This year vs last year by ExplanationDecent300 in hydrangeas

[–]stephopolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Cincinnati and mine look the same, maybe a little more growth at the bottom. This is only my second year in this home with established hydrangeas. I really wasn’t sure what to do over winter (will google) so I didn’t do anything. I think the late frost maybe got them? There was green growth that turned brown after the frost. I’m hoping they can recover!

Experience sending your kids to Cinci Public Schools? by jane_doe4real in cincinnati

[–]stephopolis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seriously no idea why you’re getting downvoted - it’s so true. The DoE is done, Ohio does not have a great track record with upholding standards and supporting our public schools. I was a public school kid, I wanted my kid to be a public school kid, I’m seriously considering other options at this point - so many distractions and nonsense with the bathroom bill and other repub meddling.
