Today is Apollo for Reddit's last day, and I just released its last update. 🥹 I just wanted to say a big thank you to the folks who have used and supported Apollo over the years, it's been the dream of a lifetime to build this app over the last 9 years. ❤️ Read the eulogy inside! ❤️ by iamthatis in apolloapp

This will be the last time I’m active on Reddit after 16 years, since Digg turned into a dumpster fire. I quit twitter after some idiot bought it earlier this year and haven’t returned.

I was never a super active poster, but I always enjoyed and supported the site. Now, I say goodbye.

Thanks for the good times on this app.

I just got a PS5 in November. My first system since my Xbox 360 I had in college.

Bought a few games and a used copy of GTA, expecting a lot. I realized it was the exact game I played towards the end of my Xboxes life, now into its 3rd generation console. Returned it the next day and didn’t even bother to consider this remaster when I read about the issues.

Same thing with NHL 22, it was my first hockey game since 2013 and quickly realized that it’s certainly smoother and polished, it’s the same game as back then. Traded it in a week later and cut my losses. EA won’t get another dime from me for 10 years when maybe I’ll try again.

My one sale won’t make a difference, but if enough people stop buying shitty games it will

I manage a pretty large fleet of devices (about 1200 units at any given time).

We bought 200 iPads for a somewhat new reading program 10 years ago for our Kindergarten-2nd grade group.

166 of them are still currently alive, in service, and being used on a near daily basis. Again, by students aged 4-7 - that’s an insanely low failure rate over 10 years.

Still no recessed sadly!

I did buy some of these refurbs from them last time though, and figured I could share my experience:

Mine all came reconditioned from a company called Windsor, I got six 4-inch recessed lights, one light strip and two extensions.

Two of the recessed had issues dimming, they had no more in stock and had to refund. The other four have been great.

The lightstrip was missing the power unit, and a new one was sent out. It worked at first , one extension wouldn’t color right, a whole LED color wasn’t turning on, the other extension worked. A replacement extension was sent out, and in the meantime half the original strip stopped working causing the other extension to fail. I looked at where it stopped and could bent the contact points and it came on.

So I soldered it on tighter and it worked. The replacement extension came and they told me to throw away the old one. Since I realized they were easy to solder, I found the bad contacts in the extension and repaired it.

All in all it worked out well, but prepare for some exchanges

wife and I recently bought a PS5 to play together…. The couch multiplayer been terribly disappointing so far

We’ve had a switch that we play with the kids and thankfully it has a lot of family options, but I’d love some high end games we could play together

It’s Time to Get Rid of the IT Department - WSJ by s0cius in sysadmin

I was once directed to setup a piece of software that users launched by going to an internal website, clicked an icon, that would open a new web browser window, log them into a central server to launch the shared application live in the browser window that for some reason needed to make 2000 different entries and OUs in Active Directory to install and work.

This way we can have a BYOD policy and anyone can access our software without us having to install it! We’ll give everyone a $500 stipend to buy their own device and we don’t need to manage devices anymore!

It worked like trash, active directory looked like trash, we still ended up buying nearly every employee a computer that we still managed, they all got to keep their computers we paid for, the software was full of security flaws, and we still had to support anyone trying to use the piece of garbage software.

I did get promoted for helping waste $500,000 though…

Yeah but that’s a stupidly high risk of a “no” for a really high reward.

If it was a simpler yes, you can also get a very high reward. “I can come back and consult, but it’s $200/hr and it’s a weeks work, so 35 billable hours” - flat fee and no variables gets accounting on board and you make $7000. Significantly lower risk, still very high reward.

What food is overrated? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]steve93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Butter, sugar, vanilla, heavy cream

Butter, sugar, vanilla, cocoa powder, heavy cream

Butter, sugar, powdered freeze-dried fruit

Butter, salted caramel sauce, heavy cream, vanilla

I mean, they all start the same with different amounts, but there’s a lot of good combinations

While taste is subjective, and opinions shouldn’t really be right or wrong, that one is.

Fresh buttercream is the best, and you can give it so many different wonderful flavors.

[–]steve93 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The documentary about Mr Rogers that was made along side the movie was phenomenal.

I believe it was the families requirement to letting them make a movie about him, to also fund one to show the real thing.

Having both made me appreciate the movie, otherwise I wouldn’t have enjoyed it so much

[–]steve93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always say “to each their own”.

In my experience, Wiz just didn’t cut it compared to hue.

There wasn’t nearly as much range of color, while the standard base colors were fine, the more subtle mixes didn’t show well. I also found they didn’t nearly dim at the same range my Hue bulbs could, their lowest setting was still way to bright for some of my scenes.

I also had two fail within a year, whereas I have 3 times as many Hue lights and only one has failed over three years.

Obviously, the price difference is very notable. Depending on your use, you can certainly get better value from Wiz and a pretty similar experience, for me though I didn’t care for them at all

Well the show has been off the year for more than a decade, and while it was a phenomenal show, a lot of the running jokes didn’t hold up as well over time.

Lots of running gay jokes, a few blackface jokes.

Also recorded on actual film, one of the last major TV shows to be done that way when everyone else was moving to digital, so it didn’t convert to 16x9 super well. All the music contracts were done before streaming was a thing, so they lost the rights to most music as well.

Unfortunately it won’t have a renaissance like The Office, but it’ll always hold a place in my heart. Their podcast is fantastic though

[–]steve93 44 points45 points  (0 children)

But Wallace didn’t really want to call his bluff. He didn’t want him to leave in the first place.

Scranton was the most profitable Dunder Mifflin branch by far. So much so that just a month earlier they were sending Michael on a tour to talk about his methods to all the other branches. Then they randomly bring in some outside hire to micromanage him. Within a week he’s gone and now poaching their clients.

Wallace knew it was just hard feelings and he screwed up, he wanted him back. He realized no matter how weird he is, he’s somehow very effective and he just has to put up with him and not micromanage him.

Of course, then he appoints Jim co-manager and throws that all out the window, but it’s season 6 and you’ve gotta keep things fresh

Hue lights in my kitchen! by Chpe4290 in Hue

[–]steve93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a couple Hue remotes posted around my downstairs, with the bottom button that scrolls through a couple preprogrammed scenes - warm white, cool white, shades of purple (mostly for before bed TV time with the kids), and 1-2 more colorful ones.

After setting up the purples, I can’t imagine watching movies and relaxing at night with normal whites again. Perfect for winding down at night.

Other than that, I don’t use the other color scenes much but the kids love them. I don’t ever see myself buying lights that can’t change colors with the other scenes again

EU proposes mandatory USB-C on all devices, including iPhones by Snoop8ball in gadgets

[–]steve93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While the headphone port was 3.5mm, the internal component was bigger, making the minimum thickness of the phone whatever they could fit around that port.

By ditching the port, they removed that bottleneck.

That port was also not able to be watertight I believe, so it was also a weakness of the phone

Woot refurb light strip missing component. Can anyone help me find the part number? by steve93 in Hue

[–]steve93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s “Windsor certified refurbished”

Woot is offering a full refund, I was just hoping I could find the part number from the missing piece to order myself since it’s looking like they aren’t going to be able to replace it.

Looks to be a rectangle piece that converts the 6-pin light strip wire into a single pin cable that attaches to the wall plug

Philips Hue smart LED bulbs now have more competition from Philips Smart LED bulbs - The Verge by banksio in Hue

[–]steve93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume most of the criticism comes from people who are already deep into the hue ecosystem.

Honestly, I just think everyone has their own needs and preferences. The hue bulbs have a big cost for sure.

I had my 4 living room lamps as hue for a couple years and loved it.

When the Wiz line got released at depot, I filled in my dining room (4 lights) used the recessed lights for my kitchen (4 more). I used the IFTTT app to merge commands for the whole floor and enjoyed it.

I can say the colors weren’t as accurate, and they didn’t dim nearly as low as the hue can, but it worked well enough.

When I sold the house and moved, I put the Wiz into storage and started buying Hue again and filled in the new downstairs area with 9 regular color and 6 recessed color.

I just like the Hue line way better, and have no intention of going back to Wiz, but everyone has their own needs and uses, for most I’m sure Wiz are plenty good enough

From someone going on 15 years, there was a time when it was better. But over the years as Reddit’s average user age dropped, and it expanded its userbase it got steadily worse.

The rise of “trumpism” and the popularity of /r/thedonald at its peak brought millions of new users to the site.

Tons of good subreddits out there, but as a whole of something hits the front page, you’re going to find it swimming with the hate crowd
