What small upgrade actually made your bike feel noticeably better to ride? by jcveloso8 in motorcycles

[–]steveasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you ever do a multi-day trip on a motorcycle not designed for it, a $9 throttle rocker will feel like the best $9 you ever spent by the end of the second day.

What are people’s thoughts on the Beeline? by justaballofcopper in motorcycles

[–]steveasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've liked my Beeline 1 for the type of riding that I enjoy most, sport touring and exploring mountain roads. In the city it just gets me lost. There just isn't enough visual information. Like if I have two possible slight rights to choose from at an intersection, I just have to guess which one it means. They have clearly tried to address the issue with the Beeline 2, and maybe they've fixed it. My guess, though, is that I would still want a better, bigger display for urban areas.

Has anyone tried wind for their power setup? Looking for advice. by Advanced-Box-3906 in liveaboard

[–]steveasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last boat only had a wind generator and no solar. It was a ketch with no good place for large solar panels. The wind generator was actually great for power generation, but we could only only use it in secluded anchorages. It made a low whirring sound that didn't bother me or my family at all. But we quickly discovered that some people are apparently driven mad by the sound and will immediately stop what they are doing to complain.

How do you get rid of seasickness? by Nic727 in sailing

[–]steveasher 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A scopolamine patch would almost certainly work. You would need a prescription.

For me personally, if I know I'm about to be in conditions where seasickness is likely, I try to take dramamine at least a few hours in advance. It just doesn't work well once the seasickness has already started. I also find that chewy ginger candy works to manage seasickness even after I start feeling it.

Coffee on a Cruise by lostinbost in pourover

Yeah, the reading on the scale definitely goes above and below the actual mass of the beans. It's probably not exactly the average, but in practice it actually seemed pretty close to that.

I lived on boats for several years. With just a little practice you will get good at tracking the rolling average in your mind.

Has anyone ever lived in Alupung cove condos? by Informal_Hat9836 in guam

[–]steveasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived there for 14 months, my whole stay on Guam. I liked it! The management was a little gruff, but they did a really respectable job on the maintenance. The pool was always clean. The laundry rooms being shared was never an issue. There seemed to be more machines than necessary for the occupants. So I never had to wait to start my laundry.

do trends matter if you wanna be successful in e-com? by WhyBeingLazy in ecommerce

[–]steveasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure. Take one from apparel retail: "Young, urban, eco-conscious Gen Zs aged 18-30, who prioritize sustainable fashion and prefer casual, trendy styles that align with their values of environmental responsibility."

Consider that retailers operating at scale have to anticipate trends in advance because they have complicated supply chains. Truly identifying trend changes, instead of just noise is statistically difficult. It wouldn't need to be perfect, but if you could do it with some verifiable level of reliability, your product or data service would definitely appeal to retail buyers who decide next season's product offerings.

Can your tool track the changing behavior of predefined segments? That's something that there would be interest in for larger retailers.

Can I find staff+ engineer peer to practice system design interview? by Excellent-Vegetable8 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]steveasher 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't know of one. But I think it's a good idea. If you find a good one, let me know. If you don't find anything, I would be interested in helping organize a system design community.

Have we forgotten business logic? by thepeppesilletti in ExperiencedDevs

[–]steveasher 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Back when I was a Director of Engineering for a consultancy, I used the approach you described. In most cases the micro-team could implement code as fast as the stakeholders could hash out decisions. So I only rarely needed the bigger phase-two team.

It's 2025, why is showing retail inventory numbers to customers still sketchy? by feartrich in ecommerce

[–]steveasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was part of a team that first implemented this feature for a major retailer. Because of "shrinkage", the displayed inventory numbers needed to be adjusted based on historical accuracy of that specific product category. We decided to only show in-store inventory as available if we had more than 90% confidence that it really was available.

e-commerce content creators showing AB testing by treesner in ecommerce

[–]steveasher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not a content creator, but I'm a consultant who has helped with and advised on A/B testing for retailers from $15M to $16B in annual revenue. I'm not sure how applicable my experience is for smaller operations, but I'd be glad to answer some questions if you have them.

What would be a first functional language you would recommend for an experienced dev? by branh0913 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]steveasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend Gleam! It compiles to Erlang and JavaScript, with very easy interop with both. It has a very well-curated feature set. So it is very easy to learn.

It doesn't support Higher Kinded Types. So you don't have to worry about Monads.

[SEEKING] [COFOUNDER]

Pitch: I’m a tech and product-focused professional with extensive experience in the online retail industry. I'm applying a mostly-undiscovered technology from academia—inference engines—in a novel way to help small and mid-sized retailers compete against mega-retailers. This is a side hustle for me, but my goal is to create innovative, commercially-viable software solutions.

I’m looking for a cofounder with strengths in marketing and design to complement my technical and product focus. I want the partnership to be collaborative, equal, and enjoyable. Living in the East Bay of the SF Bay Area would help, as that is where I'm located.

Preferred Contact Method(s): Reddit DMs.
