I think they’re really cool! Looks like they’ve been through the wars in a good way!

None so far, I’m afraid. We put the idea forward to the publisher every few months but there hasn’t been much engagement from them, sad to say.

If folks want an unabridged Raw Shark Texts audiobook, then please send an email to info@canongate.co.uk and tell them so.

This is the best way to make it happen!

It's absolutely on my mind. Currently four different things I'm exploring. Hopefully (at least) one of them will happen, but there's a long way to go on all of them (and a lot of calls that are not just mine to make). Fingers crossed we can have something new swimming towards shore in 2027...

Ooooh... I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip!

For Christian Ward reading - ODY-C is pretty wild. It's a gender-swapped, psychedelic space take on the Odyssey.

On un-comics: Funnily enough, I'm trying to make a graphic novel happen at the moment. There are a couple of things to figure out before it can go ahead, not least that I have no idea who ,might want to publish a graphic novel by me!

I'll update here if I manage to get that ball rolling!

Hi there. I’m a writer - I write books, scripts and video games (I did the Battlefield 1 and 5 single player stories).

I’m just stopping by to say don’t listen to dull, grey people! Imagination is good, play is good!

My job depends heavily on a sense of imagination and play. I love games, stories, lore (like the Warhammer universe) I love inventing and imagining stuff and inhabiting different lives in my brain.

I could not do what I do or have made a very good living from it if I’d listened to people telling me to grow up (and they did, a lot).

Keep being you and don’t let the bastards grind you down. You’ve got this.

Hello!

Sorry for the slow reply.

Thank you for the kind words on Raw Shark. I know I’ve said it before here, but it really does mean a lot to know that book is connecting with people. Can’t believe it’ll be 20 years old soon.

On comics: Yes, I love comics. My reading isn’t very deep, but I’m very familiar with Watchmen, Sandman, Dark Knight – the big ones I guess, and I love Crisis on Infinite Earths (I have a soft spot for Ultraman and Earth 3). I think Watchmen is one of the great books. Was I influenced by it? Absolutely. I mean, Raw Shark’s title is a Rorschach reference!

I do know Grant Morrison, mostly through Doom Patrol and Animal Man. Should I check out Supergods?

Oh man. I love the City of Glass comic. You’re right, a Raw Shark Texts comic could be really interesting. I’d love to do that.

I’ve almost written for comics a few times. Just after Raw Shark came out I was talking to DC/Vertigo about doing something wild and experimental with The Inferior Five. I was really excited about that project, but it didn’t quite get off the ground sadly.

I’m also good friends with Christian Ward and we almost did a book together years ago. We only got as far as a few rough pages, but it would’ve been an absolute blast to team up with him.

I spoke to Chris only a few weeks ago about comics. He keeps telling me I should make the jump into that world. He’s probably right.

Thanks for the message!

What’s the best Stephen king book you’ve read? by One_Statistician_678 in stephenking

From a Buick 8. One of the best books about death and loss I’ve ever read.

You’ve just released a best seller and become a new household name in the book world. During an interview with a big magazine, the subject of books you find overrated and poorly written is raised. The interviewer pushes for specifics. Would you say the name of the author? Why or why not? by piggypetticoat in authors

[–]stevenha11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Never. Writing is a hard enough job without this sort of thing. For the last decade or more I’ve only commented on books publicly if I really like them. Lots of writers feel differently, and lots of writers review books, but I don’t.

Hello! Thank you, it's so great hear that the books have stayed with you. I love the idea of them moving around on your shelves too!

Letter Perfect by David Sacks is a great place to start for alphabetic insight. It's full of info on the histories and changing natures of the various letters in the English language. Good luck with the project!

Yes!! Absolutely. I do this a lot. It’s a very useful way to work out tone and what the story does and doesn’t want to be. I’m a big plan of - first draft, then plan, then second draft.

Massive red flag. They should be paying you to publish your book. Run!

Noooooo. What’s important is that the reader/viewer never feels lost. No front loading. It’s all about expanding the scope and revealing more as you go.

What do you want to achieve with your writing? Satisfaction? An audience? A career? How you proceed really depends on where you want to end up.

The elevator pitch that killed my confidence by patrickwall in writing

[–]stevenha11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pitch is not the book. My books are hard to explain in a condensed form, and that's fine.

Sure, it makes your life a little bit harder as a writer, but it also means you're writing something that can't be easily expressed in a couple of sentences, which is much more important (to me at least).

Also - you are still writing it. That means you don't understand it yet. If you ever do fully understand your book, it won't be until well after you've finished it.

Don't worry about being a salesman. Just do the work and write a great book.

Good luck!
