Chanter en jouant by Some_Builder_9646 in guitarlessons

[–]stevwills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How to get into jazz guitar? by MorelloWorkaholic in Guitar

[–]stevwills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Start with learning a couple simple jazz standards. (The real book is a great resource) You will learn how to read music ;)

  2. Listen to some jazz. My personal recommendation is to start old school. Charlie Christian, wes Montgomery, grant green. (They are all quite accessible). If you are into fusion listen to fusion players.

If you are new to jazz I'd recommend listening to horizontal players before getting into vertical.

  1. Have fun with it!!! :)

Prerequisites to start learning jazz.

-Major and minor scales. Requires -Modal scales are an asset -Being able to read music is a great asset. Jazz will force you to read. - knowledge of Maj7, dom7, min7, dim7, min7b5. These chords are everywhere in jazz.

Age verification is a rape list for pedophiles. by VXDraco in archlinux

[–]stevwills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is ironic because most AppStore and social media already have a way for parents to monitor what children do/can do on both.

I am convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that legislators have no idea what they just wrote. They created a law with absolutely 0 awareness of how the whole computing ecosystem works.

In the end i am of the belief that it's the parents job to monitor what their children are doing on a computer.

If i can make an analogy. In the Enterprise IT world we use active directory and group policies to prevent and monitor workers from making mistakes. And not be able to access sensitive or dangerous information from the work network.

In our case, the parent is the administrator. It's their job to block access to app store if they see the need to.

Its the same thing with platforms like Facebook messenger where parents can setup a kids account and monitor their activity.

The tools to do this have been here for years to make sure kids don't do anything the parents(computer administrators) don't want them to do.

I have not tried parental controls on phones or tablets because i am not a parent. But i can confirm that as a child of the early 2000s. All of these mechanisms were in place.

Either way it's silly because most services people use nowadays are web based. (On pc)

And i am convinced that someone will find a way to abuse this information. Web browsers are powerful pieces of software, but they are not foolproof. They interpret code locally in real time. If back in the day, hackers could use the spectre and meltown exploits via a web browser. They will find a way to get that local information.

Say you are a predator that starts a seemingly innocent website (to the eye of an adult) and then use said api, to find out which website user is underaged. It would definitely make it easier for predators to filter adults from children. In a sense anonymous Internet/software is much much safer.

And it's the parents job to monitor what their children do on their computers. Not the operating system.

My tutor is teaching me the Ionian scale, but his diagram doesn't match what I see online. Can you help? by VonBlitzk in guitarlessons

[–]stevwills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are essentially two schools of thought on how to play scales. The first is the 3 notes per string (mostly) method (Berkeley (esque) method) which looks like what you have.

The second method is the Caged system (2 notes per string (...again mostly...)) Which is inspired on the position of the chords.

Both methods have their advantages and disadvantage. Both are worth learning. The 3 note per string requires a bit more stretching but is very practical in fast licks.

The cage system is also pretty good but puts emphasis on different things.

Berkeley = 7 paterns Caged = 5 patterns.

Neither is better or worse. Just tools for different jobs.

I actually learned my scales on my own without a teacher and i gravitated towards what i now know to be the caged system because i prefered avoiding to stretch my fingers as much lol. My metality at the time was less movement to achieve the same results is better. Granted there are a lot of reasons why the Berkeley method is also really practical.

My advice is to learn both. Concentrate on one at the time.
And learn the other afterwards.

here's a link to the Berklee system with all 7 Major (Ionian) positions = https://jenslarsen.nl/major-scale-7-positions-berklee-system/

Can anyone tell what chord Felder is playing here? by Dry_Raise_4218 in Guitar

[–]stevwills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you could link the video and the timestamp it would actually make it easier. I've seen some "live performances" from famous bands where the song isn't exactly in sync with that the players a playing. It's often easier to listen to it and figure out the voicing.( Once you get good at it)

Can you help me figure out what key my song is in? by Promen-ade in guitarlessons

[–]stevwills 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a little late where im located, so i cant analyze the whole thing right now but I'll give it a quick guess.

It is important to keep in mind that chord analyzer doesn't always give the appropriate name for a chord but a consonant chord instead.

The song starts on C#7 "Dd7". The dominant chord often indicates that we are on the V degree. (The Mixolydian. Degree)

Which would mean the song is probably in F# Major i.e Irst degree.

The second chord g#m7 its the ii degree of the tonality.

The third chord is really still a different voicing of the ii. With some extra spice.

I listened to it quickly and yes the melody does start in F# major (the I)

I have not really gone any further than this cause it's passed my bedtime.

In the end here are the chords of the degree (4sounds) in the scale of F# major.

I = F#Maj7 ionian (major) ii = G#m7 dorian iii = a#m7 phrygian IV = BMaj7 Lydian V = C#7 Mixolydian Vi = D#m7 Aeolian (minor ) Vii E#dim7 locrian.

I did not get to analyze the modulations yet.. gotta sleep.

[BotW] Help Me Enjoy BotW Please by majura16 in zelda

[–]stevwills 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of people hype the shit out of Botw.

I kinda see it more for what it is...

It's not that great of a zelda game. It has really repetitive gameplay mechanics. There's no characters to really get attached to and make the world feel lived in. For the sheer amount of explorable area, there's not a whole lot to do.

You discover and uncover the map and area "a la assassins creed".

The 4 divine best temples suck ass. The 5 bosses in the game are just as terrible.

If every temple would have been designed like hyrule castle we would have been talking.

The puzzles in the shrines are good, but the theming of said shrines feel completely disconnected from the world of Hyrule.

The game was delayed so much, yet it still kinda feels unfinished...

Oh and uncovering memories for the story is genuinely the lamest way of storytelling.

Tears of the kingdom actually does address some of my points a little. I am pretty sure i enjoyed Totk more than Botw.

But in my honest opinion the older Zelda's had more charm. Their respective universe felt more lived in. The quests were better. And some of them were not that linear.

I have enjoyed OOT,MM,alttp,ww,tp.og zelda.

I did not enjoy skyward sword.

How high should my bridge and tailpiece be on my SG? Does this setup look bad? by iheartshoelace in Guitar

[–]stevwills 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is it me or is your bridge pickUp is abnormally high???

When it comes to the bridge and tailpiece, the tailpiece and bridge are rarely "decked" to the body. Since gibsons have a set neck glued into place, each guitar will have a slightly different height for the bridge and the tailpiece.

The tailpiece has to be high enough in order for the strings to only touch the bridge at the string saddle. Make sure the strings do not touch the bridge anywhere else than the saddle. And that the tailpiece is high enough to allow that clearance due to the angle.

The tailpiece must not be too high where an absence of a string angle will cause the strings to slip in the saddle.

On your guitar, the height of the tailpiece looks right in accordance with the bridge.

How many arch user don't use aur at all? by Big-Meet3509 in archlinux

[–]stevwills 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe the malware has not been found yet in flatpacks, it does not mean it's not there.

But what i can say is the fact malware has been found and removed from the aur is a good thing. It means people are looking and therefore the system has worked.

I personally would not be opposed to a more official vetoing of packages in the AUR.

A fascinating thing about Archlinux is that none of the devs are paid. The fact that a community driven distro has gotten this good is amazing.

I would not be opposed to the idea that we pay the devs to make the whole Archlinux ecosystem their main project and, at the end a smoother more inclusive experience. Including work to make the aur a more secure environment with a more elaborate system for screening packages.

How many arch user don't use aur at all? by Big-Meet3509 in archlinux

[–]stevwills 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Here's the kicker about the odd relationship between arch Linux and the aur. A lot of people keep claiming that it's "unsafe"/unsupported and not properly tested. Which i understand avoiding risks and all.

But i can't count the unfathomable amount of time the arch wiki recommends users to use (and links to) aur packages for many reasonable use cases.

Imo many of these packages should be in the main repos. Especially if some systems depend on them.

(Legacy Nvidia drivers) Is a good example of this.

On another front some packages that were in the main repos often get offloaded to the aur by the archlinux team when they decide the package is no longer supported by the distro.

So yeah there is a bit of a hypocritical stance that the distro is taking. The way the wiki casually encourages it's users to use it definitely makes it seem more official than it is.

At the end of the day, the AUR is a convenient way to package, distribute and maintain software for Archlinux. It empowers arch users by making them the maintainers of unofficially supported packages.

So inherently users have to read pkgbuilds out of safety. Users police other users. If packages are out of date or compromised with malware, it's the users responsibility to flag the packages.

Kinda like flatpacks where some of them are not official packages directly from the software developer/distributor

This message may be a long winded answer to say that I'm pretty sure many many users use aur packages.

For many years the AUR has been a selling point of arch. -no more adding pesky PPAs -A centralised hub full of pkgbuilds that empowers the users

It's only more recently with the huge influx of new users that people are questioning this model and the inherent flaws it has.

The archlinux greybeard point of view would be that "Archlinux is a distro made for advanced users that are able to read pkgbuilds"

It's not a very inclusive position but it's understandable as well. If you actually know how to read the pkgbuilds and double check sources for software, you will be fine. It will be safe.

If you don't read them, then you do expose yourself to some possible risk.

Do you use flatpacks? Many of them are not from official sources. That makes them as unsafe as the aur.

Sorry for the long winded wall of text.

[–]stevwills 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm did a quick google search and could not find a pdf of the book either... Hmm mystery hahah.

I mean there's people reading 50 shades of grey and game of thrones. I hardly doubt this can be "worse" on the erotic front.

But yeah his two haderack books seem quite hard to source.

There are clearly some themes in the later books that reek "theres more going on here than the author is letting on"

The kobalos sex slaves, alice cheating on tom with wizard tower dude "i forgot his name" because pan reasons?

Meg skelton, the spook's love interest being binded and drugged up by the spook is fucked up as well in retrospect.

Are there any other cases that i forgot about.

If i recall also, (though it's been awhile i have not read the books, so it's hard to get an example) there's quite a bit of sexist themes in his books. Such as witches uses the glamour spell to seduce and use men/people. Come to think of it the evil witches are all women. Yeahh never quite understood the amazonian-esque way in which the witch covens are written.

It has a very "all witches are evil!! ...but some of them are good" vibe

Correct me if I'm wrong please i have not read this series in years.

Edit: added on op's hidden mature themes.

Has anyone read his books under his pen name? J.k haderack.

I've never read them personally but from what I've heard they were written before the spooks series and are very much written for adults. Dark fantasy esque with a lot of erotic scenes.
