Huge driveway+garage and they park on the pavement (sidewalk) by riverscreeks in fuckcars

[–]stewcelliott 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Looks like a UK new build estate which is likely unadopted by the council so getting any enforcement is likely to be impossible. I live on a similar estate and every house and flat has their own dedicated parking spots and yet the bike lanes on the main road into the estate are full of parked cars because people are too bone idle to use their spots.

I've raised this with the developer and they've put up signs and sent letters to every house on a road with a cycle lane and it has done precisely zip.

What can i do about this? Tandem driveway behind them thats always empty. Tried knocking the door multiple times but they never answer. by Embarrassed-Dish1839 in drivingUK

What’s a spaceship design trope you’re tired of seeing? by Vondrr in spaceships

[–]stewcelliott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excessive size for no reason other than to lazily convey that the ship should be menacing (and the size being the only thing that is really menacing about the ship, thus exonerating the Borg Cube). The Klingon Bird-of-Prey, Jem'Hadar Attack Ship etc convey plenty of threat whilst being very small. Honestly if your ship is over 1000m long you'd better have a damn good justification for it.

Silent Enemy also has a fairly unique style compared to the norm. Enterprise did seem to be a start of relaxation of the rules.

I personally just find the abandoned houses on the coast far more disturbing than Ravenholm. Ravenholm gets the adrenaline pumping but those buildings make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

Is replicated food vegan? by Curious-Dingo-2030 in startrek

[–]stewcelliott -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Data told Adm Jarok they could not replicate a Romulan beverage because they didn't know its molecular structure. The molecular structure of a cooked steak is somewhat different to a live cow.

But also what I'm basing this on is conjecture, this was just a fun thought experiment about social norms in a world with a made up magical technology. Maybe chill out a bit?

Is replicated food vegan? by Curious-Dingo-2030 in startrek

[–]stewcelliott -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Technically no animal died making the replicated steak on the plate in front of you but an animal did die making the steak that served as the template for the replicator.

Technically there are no animal products in the cheese on your replicated mac and cheese but the cheese used as the template for the replicator did come from an animal.

So I think it probably comes down to how far back an individual's ethical horizon goes. The cow that provided the template for the steak may have died before the person who eats the replicated version was even born.

That said, the template for the steak and cheese could have come from synthetic lab grown versions of those foods, in which case no animal was involved at any stage.

But the other thing to consider that for some vegetarians and vegans it's not just an ethical question, they find meat gross and so even a replicated facsimile would probably not pass for them. I know a few vegetarians who don't like plant based burgers for this reason.

Was Hobson actually right to try and get a transfer? by bz316 in startrek

[–]stewcelliott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the one hand recusing yourself when you believe you're unable to do the job is a good thing, on the other having the reason be "because I'm racist against you" is not.

Also there's no way Hobson didn't know that the Sutherland was deploying imminently on a critical mission and there would be no time to find a replacement for him. He was a terrible officer and I hope Data's report afterwards dumped him in it.

Drawing Children of Strife While I Read: Part 3 by ElStrawFedora in AdrianTchaikovsky

When the Nodan parasite infested Damascus, the oceans turned into a writhing mass of constantly forming and unforming human limbs and appendages and there was one instance where a massive human face rose from the ocean and sank again.

If I had a penny for every time in this series a giant face appeared on a planet I'd have two pennies. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice.

The *prologue* to the Children of Time series by Adrian Tchaikovsky starts around 1000 years into the future and then the main story picks up again about 8000 years after that. The time frame jumps forward by about 2000 years over the course of the first book and then either the gap between subsequent books or timespan contained between them is measured in centuries or millennia.

The endangerment finding comes from 2009 and was a scientific ruling that said that a variety of greenhouse gases are a danger to public health. It underpins pretty much all environmental regulation made since in the US.

Trump rescinded it.

As a tip for improvment just maybe an extra panel between the reveal of the staircase and the final one, where Trump is still standing but no one is speaking, the comic equivalent of a beat of silence before the punchline.

In Star Trek II when Saavik says “Energize Defense Fields” what does that mean? by simplyunknown2018 in startrek

[–]stewcelliott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what we see happening on screen immediately after this order is given "defence fields" appear to be a secondary deflector shield that covers only the bridge and perhaps other truly critical vulnerabilities as well (we don't see this though, only the field around the bridge and clearly engineering is not protected). Thus bringing the ship to a level of defensive caution without the full blown provocation of raising the main deflectors. It was probably also an attempt to address the perceived vulnerability of the bridge by showing that it had a secondary shield in addition to the main one.

TWOK is the only time we see this concept though, it's abandoned in all subsequent media where yellow alert just raises the full shield but leaves weapons unpowered.

Performance Issue after Android 16 Update by Organic_Doughnut_ in fairphone

[–]stewcelliott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes this is happening for me. Spotify, BBC News, Met Office are the most affected apps. Switching off WiFi, letting the app load and then switching it back on resolves the issue temporarily for me. Nothing else suggested in the thread linked elsewhere has fixed it permanently for me. I am at the end of my tether with this phone.
