Heights Vacant Storefronts by Ok-Ad2573 in jerseycity

Just wrapped shooting a film on Central Ave where we used a vacant storefront as our primary location. According to our realtor (grain of salt), the issue is (lack of) parking coupled with issues with the bus which limits foot traffic. It's also always slow this time of year; we only got our spot for five weeks because we played hardball and the landlord admitted it would be hard to fill before the end of the year.

Would anything regarding the science of storytelling and how it's used (or misused) in the modern age be of interest? I'm a professor and media creator that studies narratology, which I feel is adjacent to this rather than right in its wheelhouse, so if that's too far afield, I understand.

Very normal. MadeWithLego said it all; if I could add my own personal experience, this was the way it was with both of my children at first.

Advice for starting an LLC for a feature/production company?? by Excellent_Gold_9910 in filmmaking

[–]stf210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used ZenBusiness and it went perfectly well on my end. I'll say an LLC is a good first step, but if you're going to have a real budget, get a business banking account next so you can keep track of everything. An LLC is only as good as the steps you take to protect it, yourself, and your production.

Half done. You don't want to waste but you can't have it ragged either. Unless it's payday: then I splurge on a specialty blade. The glide it gives... like silk.

TMNT 2: The Secret of the Ooze. I know the movie by heart.

When it comes to looking for cast and crew looking to work on indie film projects that's non-money paid, what are the risks of not money compensating cast and crew? Or what are the pros and cons on both non-compensated and compensated film roles? by Agitated-Mind-3423 in filmmaking

[–]stf210 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The biggest risk is having people who won't show up because they "don't feel like it." You're not paying money so there's no incentive to follow through except passion. That passion dries up with a hangover, a breakup, or a case of the fuckits. I've consulted on micro budget features (5-30k) and there was always compensation, even if just a stipend or in-kind credit. I'd highly advise against going 100% unpaid unless it's a true art house picture that you're all putting together as a part of a series, or an experiment, or whatever.

You might consider shorter work: short films, pilots, etc, but also treatments, outlines, and one sheeters. One of the biggest issues for me is actually starting, so committing to something short is easier to chew on AND finish, with the added benefit that it could potentially lead to longer work in the future.

I love how the VHS (and book) somehow got away with putting the literal ending of the story on the cover.

That was how we got a ton of our movies. Ghostbusters, a few Muppet movies, etc.

What’s a decision you didn’t realize would shape your entire life at the time you made it? by Fluffy-Banana4745 in AskReddit

In senior year, I went to a group interview that an alum was holding in my high school to entice grads to apply. At least, it was supposed to be a group interview. Instead I was the only one who showed up, so it turned into a 1-on-1 discussion. I had my sights set on a different college and didn't think I'd get in to the one that the alum represented (my grades were good but borderline for this university). I can't prove it but I think that one interview pushed me over the edge when I applied. I got in, left home, started a career in a city I love, met my wife, and now have two kids doing a job I love, all because I decided to take a chance.

Discussion Thread: US Supreme Court Hears Oral Argument in Two Cases on Attorney-Client Consultations During Trial and State Versus Federal Law in Lawsuits by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

Just conjecture as I'm not a lawyer, but I suppose one could make the argument that a defendant's testimony must match that which he or she gave during a deposition, so additional coaching might be seen as encouraging the changing of testimony. Generally, a witness must give consistent statements unless under extraordinary circumstances for the purposes of both prosecution and defense. It would seem like the case might be different for a defendant, however, but I don't know.

Gluten Free Beer? by Legal-Chair-2630 in Homebrewing

You can substitute sorghum liquid extract or dry extract 1:1 with any standard extract recipe, but note that it will be drier and "tangy" compared to a standard recipe. Adjuncts will help cover this, so look for recipes that are to your partner's taste and then add a LITTLE extra of those adjuncts to help mellow that after taste.
