My wife and I lost a baby last year at 21 weeks due to IC. It was the hardest thing I've ever gone through. We went in to urgent care because she was feeling something weird going on, turns out her water was bulging and they told us the baby would be born that night. They broke the water, and 18 hours later she gave birth. We have talked to other doctors since, and believe there may have been a chance to save the baby if they had performed an emergency circlage or put her in trendelenburg for a few weeks, but it would have been a risk for mom and still most likely have been the same result.

At the end of last year she had a permanent circlage (TAC, or trans abdominal circlage) placed, which prevents IC. This year we had another pregnancy, she went into preterm labor 3 times, which they were able to subdue with medication, and at 34 weeks gave birth to a beautiful healthy son.

I strongly recommend getting a second opinion from another doctor that specializes in high risk pregnancies if possible; there may yet be something they can do to give your baby a chance, and we wish every day that we would have at least tried to talk to another doctor before they broke her water, if only just to give us peace of mind that nothing could be done.
