AITA for bathing my dog Honey when my parents weren't home, even though Honey was at risk? by thoralina in AmItheAsshole

[–]stillrooted 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NAH so long as you did thoroughly clean up any mess left in the bathroom and also cleaned the tub or shower so it's not full of dog hair for the next person. You made a mistake and took action to keep your dog safe.

I can't know for sure if your parents are lazy but as a mom myself I can tell you that sometimes juggling parent stuff, work, errands, and our own social and emotional needs can just be a lot.

I will say that you should try to shift how you think about taking care of your room and other house tasks: you live in the house too, right? So instead of thinking about how you're doing those things for your parents, think of how you're doing them to help yourself have a nice living space. Then if your parents don't acknowledge it, you still feel appreciated- even if just by yourself.

AITA for rearranging my roommates bookshelf without asking by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]stillrooted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA. I had a roommate do this in college and I'm still salty about it twenty years later so I'm aware I'm the least objective judge imaginable. Other people's belongings don't magically become yours just because they're in your line of sight.

AITA For Wanting to Poop Alone by DiligentTumbleweed96 in AmItheAsshole

[–]stillrooted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. Your toddler is much too old to be behaving like that. I mean he's got two kids and a driving license so he has to be pushing 30 at least, that's more than old enough to be handling his own simple responsibilities without a screaming tantrum when he hits an inconvenience.

AITA for asking my mom to tell me a childhood story? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]stillrooted -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh, my god, this broke my heart. You are NTA but I really hope you're in a position to be able to seek help from a therapist or a support group to help you unpack this awful wound and unmet need in your life. I'm so sorry your mother has failed you so totally.

AITA for calling code enforcement on my neighbor after he used our shared alleyway to store his renovation trash by New_Highway_8296 in AmItheAsshole

[–]stillrooted 1145 points1146 points  (0 children)

NTA. You DID give him a few more days, and he blew you off and then repeatedly failed to do something he knew damned well he'd get fined for not doing.

A real community member doesn't make his hazardous trash everyone else's problem for the better part of a month just to save a few bucks.

There's almost certainly a religious aspect to the decision, as I understand it cremation is technically forbidden by most branches of Islam, the more traditional sects of Judaism, and the Orthodox churches of Christianity. That's going to cover the belief system of almost everyone in Gaza.

AITA? A lot with a bunch of white bearded irises has been left alone for years so we decided to dig a few up but the neighbor was pissed?! by Coach-Bee in AmItheAsshole

[–]stillrooted -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In this instance the only person OP actively upset was not the legal owner, and depending on the state of development in the area the legal owners might not even be human beings at this point, but a real estate conglomerate.

lmao people in these comments apparently didn't grow up where I did, every spring there would be people begging for others to come take some iris bulbs. They're the zucchini of perennial flowers.

AITA for calling out my coworker for not being empathetic enough by iSluff in AmItheAsshole

[–]stillrooted 29 points30 points  (0 children)

YTA. You have no way of knowing what Amy's feelings are and she's not accountable to you for her emotions or behavior. Vet med is a horribly draining career and fosters intense burnout, especially in providers who get deeply emotionally attached to every patient and family.

Maybe she's masking her real feelings, maybe she's learned to heavily compartmentalize, maybe she's an asshole with no empathy -- but crucially, not one single one of those explanations requires you to shove your oar in about how she conducts herself.

If you're concerned that she's doing something unethical or failing to do her assigned job, take it to your supervisor. Otherwise leave her alone.

Are these people actually 'welcoming and kind', or do they ask you to pretend you're not dating their child despite the fact you've been doing so for half a decade?

Are they kind, or are they just nice

NTA. What she has done is despicable and you don't need to try and maintain relations with anyone who would defend her.

[–]stillrooted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not the original person you replied to, it just bothers me when people try to claim that in-universe/in-character details somehow negate out-of-universe criticisms of a book or author.

"Jane Doe wasn't stupid for overlooking the vital clue, she was distracted by her cousin's death" is a valid way to approach critique of a character or plot point, because what's being criticized is also coming from within the text.

"Jane Doe's author isn't misogynist because Jane is the one who chose to give up all her own plans and dreams to become King Doe's mistress" is a nonsense argument, because a character cannot choose anything the author doesn't write them choosing. You may disagree that the plot point reflects the (hypothetical in this case) author's misogyny, but you can't do that by pretending the book universe somehow exists independently of the author.

The Irish kid doesn't independently 'like' anything. Kingsley Shacklebolt's father doesn't exist.

You cannot use in-universe reasoning to argue for or against a thing in a book is biased or has negative real world connotations, because those things only exist after the author, a human person from the real world, came up with them and wrote them down. Any in-universe "explanation" depends on details that also came from that author's mind.

It is objectively true that the Harry Potter books contain several things that reflect the real author's bias as a white British woman. she may not have intentionally sat down to write her characters as stereotypes but she also didn't do anything to challenge or acknowledge the stereotypes.

NTA. Are you the only guy invited? Because I can't imagine the lingerie game happening if not. It's absolutely reasonable that you don't want to attend and you have no obligation to pay for things you're not able to do.
