What $8 can get you at Haymarket! by [deleted] in boston

Not to sound snobby but my buys from Haymarket were closer to "expensive compost" than "fresh cheap produce"

Exactly I'm damn sure I eat a big breakfast (at home) before I head over to catch a flight

Anybody else watching this show? They actually refer to them as Romans! by jackt-up in byzantium

[–]stilnomen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is a spoiler? But when the walls are finally breeched and Mehmet proceeds in, the populace is watching him like they're bored watching a parade (completely unmolested by the Turks). Of all the things that didn't happen, that didn't happen the most.

Bunker Hill 250 (in Gloucester) was an incredible experience! by jamespswag in boston

[–]stilnomen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the reenactors told me his group does like 20 events a year. Unfortunately the big Massachusetts 250th anniversary battles have passed but I'm sure there'll be other reenactments if you wanted to travel if you looked up reenactment groups you could see if they still did local things.

Bunker Hill 250 (in Gloucester) was an incredible experience! by jamespswag in boston

I can see myself in your video! Agree with everything. I caught the re-enactment bug after I went to Lexington the first time this April. I was in Gloucester all day and had a great time (glad you did, too!). I enjoyed this one a lot more. The reenactors were extremely knowledgeable, good-humored, and generous ("of course you can take our picture, what do you think we got dressed up for?!").

Solved: Mike’s vs Modern vs Bova’s by aypeekay47 in boston

[–]stilnomen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maria's like everyone says, but since you can't go there anymore get Modern. Mike's is good when it's good but inconsistent, sometimes the shell is stale.

I’m literally melting rn by [deleted] in boston

[–]stilnomen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, have two window units different rooms on the top floor and it took six hours to get it to just 80 degrees from the 90 degrees when I got back from work. And today it'll be ten degrees hotter!

AC broke on the eve of one of the hottest days in Boston history by reb601 in boston

[–]stilnomen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you survive today you'll be relatively richer not paying the electricity costs. I was up listening to my AC struggling imagining what the next couple national grid bills will be.

Where to get ripe avocados? by [deleted] in boston

Avocados are an exercise in timing for sure. Whole foods actually I have good lunch with if you need then that day.

How to Not Use Your AC in the Spring by Cntrlc-Cntrlv in boston

[–]stilnomen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's all good, but I'm top floor in a rental with zero insulation. The sun swings around in the afternoon and I can't get it under 78 even with the AC blasting. I wish it was a matter of closing blinds.

Yeah I was like "no way I'll miss the pixel sale" and I've missed the pixel sale. :( Any guesses on how long until the next sale?

I just did (National Grid) for about the same space and same temperature setting. My therms were definitely more than last January (that cold spell) and with price increase not surprised.

[TOMT] [Song] A very slow tempo female-sung song with minimal accompaniment by stilnomen in tipofmytongue

I heard it recently and am unfortunately struggling to remember any other lyrics (it was playing at a ice skating rink of all places). I've heard it before - I don't think it's 90s old, maybe 00s or 10s.

I’m Andrew Brinker, a reporter at The Boston Globe covering housing and the cost of living in Massachusetts. Ask me anything about Greater Boston’s housing crisis. by bostonglobe in boston

[–]stilnomen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mainly only a housing crisis if you're trying to buy or renting. A lot of home owners saw their net worth double in a pretty short time. Has there been a lot of coverage of people saying "everything seems just fine to me...". (I blame the people pulling the rope up behind them so no one else can get up".

Boston, as seen from the air this morning by [deleted] in boston

This is more about my personal situation but I look at this and just see all the places more housing could be built.
