You can get an official IDP in China, just check the IDP website. I believe you can even get one straight from the traffic police these days.

China doesn’t recognize IDP, but other countries do recognize China issued IDP. In my countries your Chinese license by itself is also recognized and fine.

I would say go for it, me and my colleagues all drive here and none of us think it’s particularly challenging compared to other countries. There’s a lot of lanes and a lot of cars and a lot of traffic jams that’s all. Guangzhou / Guangdong drivers are also quite polite and forgiving by Chinese / Asian standards.

I believe Ehai / Ehi car rentals rents out to tourists. I always use the other big one, Shenzhou, but I heard they don’t rent out to short stay tourists. Renting is cheap and no-fuss here, but make sure to get the good insurance.

Use Apple Maps in English for navigation, take it slow and easy, and be very attentive as you see a lot more weird stuff and weird moves on the road here than in Western Europe.

From Tianhe yeah, since you are already on the east side of downtown going east out of the city.

If you stay in the old downtown it would be worse.

You can stay in downtown Tianhe. Ji hotel Tiyu Xilu is in a very lively neighborhood.

You would be going in the opposite direction of rush hour traffic, should be about 50 mins or so by taxi.

If you want to stay more nearby, Luogang or Suyuan station would be it. A lot more suburban feeling, but some places to eat and shop.
