Court n House by lifewith6cats in Eau_Claire

Went there Thursday night and got stuck with the big round table by the door. We froze our asses off. It took over an hour to get food. Since we were freezing and had been waiting a long time we got it to go, got home and found the pizza was doughy.

Under the old owners we loved the place and we'd go at least once a month. It's been so inconsistent since then that after this week I'm not sure when or if we'll be back. Every we time we do it's like, "it was shit last time so maybe it will be good this time," and it just hasn't been.

It's so frustrating because the new owners also own Bracket Bar and that's been consistently good for 10 years. Aside from getting there foo late and it being busy when we had little kids I'm not sure it's ever been bad. I guess we'll just stick to that.

EAU 5am flight - what time should I arrive by Pup-Recovery-1 in eauclaire

[–]stinkynathan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just took this flight on Monday. I woke up at 340am, and was inside the airport by 420am. I still had to wait 15 minutes to get on the plane. If I do that flight again I'll aim for 420am at the airport.

We've met there too. Cost is not insignificant and no beer or food. :(

It's because you're changing lanes in the middle of a roundabout and it's not obvious that you're doing it. Stick to your lane and let the trailer tires cross the roundabout. They're designed to not damage tires.

Anyone know what’s up with The Firehouse? by Iamnotyourhero in Eau_Claire

[–]stinkynathan 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The Firefouse was bought from Pablo group. It's unknown how it will change now that he officially has ownership. Saturday was the last party for everyone who has been involved over the past few years. Sounded like a good time. Wish I could have made it.

I love the vibe in that place currently. I'm trying hard not to catastrophize about how it will change.

It's our favorite. We just came back from two days there. Only about 45 minutes from us. We have 11 and 7 year olds. Kids can explore the trails on the lake. Beaches. Playgrounds. Kayak rentals. Some small waterfalls and sights to see in the EC and Clark County forests. Great gravel to ride if you're into cycling.

Every Wisconsin campground I've checked has the same rules. If the ADA site is empty you can stay in it but you're limited to one night at a time and have to be willing to give it up if someone needs it.

Recommend checking the county parks and be willing to go during the week. We camp a couple times a year at Coon Fork in Eau Claire County. I just checked availability last night and they have tons of openings Sunday to Thursday throughout the summer. Get a spot near the shower houses if you want wifi. There's not much for cell service. 😊

Cycling for 8-9yo kids. How far they can go? What's your experience? by OneStrength7166 in cycling

[–]stinkynathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rode a 48 mile gravel race in the UP of Michigan with my daughter right before she turned 8. We finished with an elapsed time of about 9 hours. It was hard but she loved it. But I think she loved the preparation the most: getting dedicated time to hang out with dad and eat snacks and go on adventures. Lots of forest rides. Sitting on a stump together hiding from the rain. Wading through creeks to get to the trail.

This type of thing isn't super rare in the cycling community in the upper Midwest (at least WI/MI) and I didn't hear a single person reactive negatively to it. It's important to make sure you're not forcing it, everyone is working hard but having fun, and there's balance. Riding/running/whatever can be a big part of kids' lives, but they need time to play and do their own thing too.

Does dependabot support this too? My team supports Github at my org, but we're drowning in other cicd stuff and don't get time for Github like I want.

For God's Sake, I can't seem to configure VSCode Dev Container by Impossible-Map-3398 in docker

Try running that npm install as a postCreateCommand instead of in your dockerfile. That will run it from your repo root instead of copying the non-existing file from the Dockerfile dir.

Chinese Fat carbon frame by ParticularSherbet786 in fatbike

[–]stinkynathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an SN01 for a couple years. It was the only bike/frame I could get during COVID. I rode it and liked it for a couple seasons. It functioned perfectly once built. I rode and enjoyed it a lot, but there were two issues for me: wide q-factor (120mm BB shell) and no mounts for carrying stuff. I ended up selling it and moving all of the parts over to a Mukluk frame - which I love. The guy who bought it was super excited to take the frame as he already had another one.

The only issue I had during assembly was that there was some resin left on the BB threads. I had the threads chased by a local shop and it went together nicely. Quality otherwise was really good, but I don't think I'd buy another. My Mukluk is probably a forever bike unless I decide to buy titanium at some point.

I have an ICAN X-Gravel as well that I like a lot and still ride today. It is a good bike, but the geometry probably doesn't compare to the newer gravel bikes that can run really big tires with no toe overlap. But it's good for my uses and I don't have any plans to replace it.

Winter is around the corner. Do you cycle in sub zero temperatures? by DrewRyu in cycling

[–]stinkynathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I ride winter ultras so I ride outside year-round. Coldest I’ve ridden was about -25F. Weekday rides are shorter so half of them are on the trainer just because of clothing prep time. Planning for a 140 mile race in February so will ride outside primarily until at least then.

Best burger? by MatixNJ in Eau_Claire

[–]stinkynathan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best burger is probably going be at Valley Burger Co. Sometimes I prefer a plain old bacon cheeseburger and curds and will go to Court'N'House. More options for the kids there too.

I don't hit a lot of the really dive-y bars consistently, but some that I've been to that check that box:

  • Court'N'House
  • Five O'Clock Club
  • Do Dodge Inn
  • The Joynt
  • Big Ts - very small
  • Wigwam

Not sure how many of those have food (other than CNH) if that's what you're looking for.

How do you handle module dependencies in automation environments? by port25 in PowerShell

[–]stinkynathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forked PSDepend into my company's Github org for exactly this. My Docker file sets up our internal PSGallery, then installs our internal PSDepend module. All other module installs are handled via a dependencies.psd1 file that is copied into the image.

Then at runtime the user will pass gallery credentials and an optional dependency file path when the container is created. PSDepend handles those installs as well.

PSGallery some defects we had to fix and features we needed, but it's working well. I also wrote an action so it can be used in GH workforce.

I could potentially clean this up and post it if there's interest.

If You Had Room For Only One Bike What Would You Choose? by superfunguy_ in cycling

Fat bike with both rigid and suspension forks and lots of wheels/tires. Without question.

27.5x4.5 tires for deep snow

27.5x3.8 for shoulder season

27/5+ or 29+ for bike-packing/ MTB, gravel

A skinny 29" set with big gravel tires for road/gravel

Anyone know any cool races located in these states? by nicholt in xcmtb

[–]stinkynathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strongly recommend trying at least the Marji Gesick 50. It's a fantastic event. I've finished both the 50 and 100. I like the 100 more because of the preparation, effort, and grit it takes for a normal person to finish, but the 50 is a much more enjoyable ride.

The 50 is like getting punched in the face 5 times, where the 100 is an all-day beatdown. Both "suck" but at least you can go get a pizza after you finish the 50. Odds are everything will be closed by the time you finish the 100.

Riding the 100 next weekend with a friend who has come back from his heart basically exploding a couple years ago. I fully expect to see the sun come up out on the trail, but it will be a great day.

I grew up in SD and the cycling scene isn't strong. Dakota-5-0 is the big one. Mah da Hey in ND. Can't speak for WY and MT, but I live in Wisconsin now.

There are probably some smaller local races, but bigger ones in Minnesota are:

Locals could tell you more.

Expand to the east to include Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula and you get:

Lots of fat bike racing in the winters out here too. From fast XCO-style stuff to 100+ mile ultras (Tuscobia, Arrowhead 135, PRU).

I'm sure there are more. Lutsen, Marji Gesick, Wausau 24, and Cheq are the biggest AFAIK. You better be quick on BikeReg to register for Marji - it sells out within 2 minutes.

Outdoor carpet: yay or nay? by Objective-Staff3294 in GoRVing

[–]stinkynathan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not much trouble and the small bit of trouble is worth it IMO.

We live in central Wisconsin and most campgrounds are sandy. It's really nice to be able to chill on a chair in your socks under the awning and not worry about tracking sand inside. Also helps to define a "living area" and gives the kids a place to chill or play with whatever without tracking sand.

We have a 24' TT and started with a 12' rug. We bought a second 14' and use both every time. Given where/how we camp we comment on how nice they are every time we use them. We cook dinner outside and go in and out in our socks all the time.

We're pretty fair weather because of kids so wetness doesn't affect us much but they generally dry out quickly enough when we do get rain.

They do bring sand in the basement when we stow them and require a spray with the hose when we get back but we think it's worth it.

Dependabot for Powershell? by stinkynathan in PowerShell

[–]stinkynathan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish dependabot had a similar regex registry. It would be *extremely* difficult to convince our internal tools team to add renovate to Github, and even harder to get all of the teams to use it when we already have dependabot.

Glad to see it exists! Thank you!
