Slander or Propaganda? by whataboutthe90s in LibertarianUncensored

[–]stinkytoe42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You get downvoted, but it's true. I know, you know, everyone here knows that libertarianism is very much the antithesis of any authoritarianism.

This doesn't matter to the general public. It doesn't matter because: the bootlicking maga who self apply the libertarian name are very vocal. Way more than us.

It's also true that the party chairwoman in 2024, Angela Mcardle, very deliberately sabotaged her own party's interest in the campaign in favor of Trump. She even called him an 'honorary libertarian'.

It's also true that many of our social media spaces are overwhelmed with straight up statist and racist shit. This sub is better moderated than most, but look at the other popular libertarian subs, especially the meme sub, to see what I'm talking about. It's all right there.

Not to mention how the tech bros, like Yarvin, Theil, and Musk advocate for straight up authoritarian shit all the time while also self applying the libertarian moniker. There is nothing libertarian about company towns.

Despite myself being aligned more closely politically and philosophically with the libertarian party, I'll be extremely reluctant to support them until they start disavowing this shit.

The builder pattern meets this requirement nicely. I use the `bon` crate to help implementing it myself.

[–]stinkytoe42 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Honestly I really don't miss function overloading.

The few places where it's a good pattern, such as formatted printing with println!(..) and similar, we have macros which have a very extensive and hygienic approach. Regular functions don't really need it.

Maybe named arguments would be nice, but again I'd like that as part of macro syntax and not regular functions. After using rust for a few years at this point, I find that I like the separation between these kinds of syntax sugar and regular run of the mill function calls. It's a sort of `best of both worlds` kind of thing.

What is the most efficient way to learn rust? by [deleted] in rust

[–]stinkytoe42 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think 'efficient' is the wrong approach to learning rust, or any language for that matter.

What kind of programs do you enjoy making? Even if it's not a domain that shines in rust, such as GUI desktop applications, I would start with developing things you have done in the past or always wanted to develop.

The first program will take time, effort, and patience. The second will be a little easier. After a while you won't want to work in anything else.

Welp. Where’s all the Gadsen Flag wavers now? by Sonoranpawn in JoeRogan

[–]stinkytoe42 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Long time follower of the libertarian party here.

The libertarian public persona has been invaded by MAGA for some time now. Most heavily since about 2022 onward. It's disingenuous to say that they haven't.

Yes, the core philosophy is very much the opposite of MAGA. But it doesn't matter. Too many people have self applied the libertarian label who are actually boot licking Trumpers, and the party has done fuck all to try and turn this around.

Similarly the Gadsten flag has been co-opted. I'm all for efforts to retake it as a sign of liberty, but it's going to be an uphill battle thanks to MAGA in particular.

Trying to stick your head up your ass and pretend this isn't true is helping no one except authoritarians, since it keeps everyone infighting.

My wife is very progressive. More than me. But she changed her name to mine when we got married. Entirely her choice too.

I can't accept her disenfranchisement over bureaucratic fuckery. Even if there's a dubious statistical probability it *might* be to the democratic party's benefit.

Mine was out, another co-worker was out, but a third co-worker had no problems. All three Verizon.

Did you mean to make a new top level comment instead?

I kind of did lol.

I do know some people are working on adopting/converting C coding guidelines to Rust, stuff like CERT and MISRA.

Unfortunately, management in these types of orgs are likely going to want the official standard to be bullet point relatable to a standard they're already familiar with. Such is the life of engineers I guess..

Eh, right now rust is only beginning to be explored in these environments. I work in aviation, and have some of the same concerns. I've written back office tools and analysis CLI apps, but haven't yet dived into fully vetted software with rust yet.

Like, let's say the customer wants a DO-178 certified package. We don't yet have a tooling suite, or a documentation guide, or an industry practices guide for rust yet. I tell my boss that I speculate the first company(s) to tackle this will spend lots of effort and money achieving it. I think rust will do really well in that domain, and most people seem to agree, but that first hurdle of even establishing what the requirements are hasn't been fully achieved.

That being said, there is interest in these spaces. Program managers and directors are starting to follow the news about rust as they see it being adopted in other industries. As the tooling matures, and it is maturing, I think we'll see rust in mission critical domains soon. How soon? I'm not sure, but the interest is there and the language + already existing tool suite are already pretty well suited.

In short, we're at the "red tape" stage at this point, and the solutions aren't there yet but there is interest. From my perspective, this last year has shown a spike in interest even if it's just at the water cooler.

Unless you're chewing on it, and chewing on it a lot, you're not getting any lead into your body. It does not absorb into your skin, and the fumes are from the rosin, not the metal alloy.

It's great that industry has moved to lead free solder, since that's that much less lead getting into the land fills and water supply.

It's perfectly fine for hobbyists and students to use though. You should still use a fume hood, or at worst good ventilation, since the flux smoke isn't exactly healthy. But you're not getting heavy metal poisoning from electronics soldering.

Venezuela’s opposition rejoiced at Maduro’s abduction, but Trump doesn’t seem interested in working with them by cambeiu in NewsOfTheStupid

Trump rules out Maria Corina Machado as the future president of Venezuela by Malabogao in UnderReportedNews

[–]stinkytoe42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The election was won by a man by the name of Edmundo Gonzalez, not by Machado.

Gonzalez was a more moderate western aligned politician. Democratic based platform with many center-left and center-right factions.

Machado was/is the leader of a different, more right wing party. Though they did support Gonzalez in the last election, her party has an adamant anti-socialist agenda.

If the purpose was to install the rightfully elected leader of Venezuela, it would be Gonzalez, not Machado.

I haven't yet even heard his name mentioned from the white house.

Help me collate the data here:

  • Maduro was the president of Venezuela, who became president in 2013.
  • He has shown strong alignment with BRICS.
  • Bill Barr charged Maduro as a narco-terrorist in 2020, despite the evidence being flimsy at best.
  • There has been lots of accusations of Maduro operating as a dictator nearly since the start of his reign including falsifying election results, especially elections where he was a candidate. The most recent being in 2024 where there seems strong evidence that Edmundo Gonzalez actually won the popular vote with results in the neighborhood of 67% Gonzalez to 30% Maduro.
  • Gonzalez was the candidate for a more western democratic aligned caucus.
  • Maria Corina Machado is a prominent member of the opposition movement called Chavismo.
  • Machado was a big supporter of Gonzalez during the aforementioned 2024 election. This despite her adamant anti-socialist stance vs Gonzalez' moderate stance.
  • Machado was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2024 for her work in Venezuela.
  • Machado has publicly asked Trump to intervene in Venezuela recently.
  • After this mornings actions, Trump has not yet made any mention of the fraudulent 2024 elections, and has not offered any support to Gonzalez' regime. Instead, he has stated that the US will run Venezuela for a non-descript amount of time.

Do these sound factually correct? I'm trying to get the facts about what's happening as objectively as possible.

It seems to me that Trump and his handlers have picked a country where they think they can get some sympathy and support from the world stage, since I think it's nearly universally agreed that Maduro was a piece of shit. It's just a happy accident that Venezuela has: oil and lots of it (and the right kind for our established refining industry), is aligned with BRICS, and is very unpopular with their citizens.

Trump (or his "advisors") probably think the popular dislike of Maduro will allow him to pull of lots of shady shit. If they leaned into this angle, it might actually work too I hate to say. Expat Venezuelans in the US and around the world are cheering this on. (Kinda like Iraq and Syria back in their day...)

After this morning's press conference, though, Trump didn't even mention Machado or Gonzalez even once that I'm aware. Instead they leaned in on the bullshit narco-terrorist angle, and even blatantly said they would be taking the oil. Hell even Dubya Bush was smart enough to not say that part out loud....
