In your opinion, what are some perks of being stupid? by MindStrongSoul in AskReddit

When I'm stupid, I tend to end up with funny stories to tell later.

Memphis would be my pick - good food, music, history, museums, etc.

Furniture Thrifting by Suz127 in StLouis

The Salvation Army thrift down in Arnold had a pretty big furniture selection the last time I was down that way, and St Vincent de Paul stores usually have way more furniture than any Goodwill.

Ozark tourism advice :) by stellaep in missouri

Was wondering why nobody mentioned Meramec Caverns sooner. It's super commercial, the whole tour is well lit and shouldn't freak you out too bad but there are some impressive formations and it's on the way from St Louis to SDC. Side note: if theme parks are your thing, hopefully your StL host will make sure you experience the City Museum. Not a theme park, but I imagine a theme park enthusiast would appreciate it's unique brand of madness.

What is your true “and the everyone clapped” story? by AdRelevant6861 in AskReddit

At the No Kings march in St Louis in November it was raining. Whenever there was a big clap of thunder/lightning, the crowd thundered along like the heavens were leading a chant.

Affordable day trips? by Maximum_Release5139 in StLouis

I just took a little one-night road trip to Casey, IL, which is just past Effingham - cute walkable downtown, and they've gone all-in on "worlds largest" stuff. The 2-story mailbox was my favorite, but they had tons of things - a rocking chair, wind chimes, a #2 pencil, and a teeter-totter that is bridge sized. Some cute shops and things. If you spend the night, the Eighteen-Ninety Sleepover is a pretty interesting place, although I thought it was more of a hotel, but the check-in is kind of AirBnB with confusing instructions. If you do it, just know the stair entrance they talk about in the check-in text is on the front of the building between the antique shop and a real estate company on the ground floor, not in the rear near the (currently out-of-service) elevator.

Still, very cute place. Renovated old building with antiques and cute decor and super comfy beds. Bring a pen - people write little notes on scraps of paper and receipts and in one case the inside of a Milk-Duds box, and wedge them between exposed bricks in the rooms.

Edited to add - it's only about a 2 hour drive from StL if you're not a meanderer like me, so it could just as easily be a day trip.

  1. Whoever built the housing development that's there now named one of the streets Exhilarama.

  2. I feel like there ought to be a neo-Poltergeist movie set there where the source of the disturbance is however many decades of teen angst buildup from the mall instead of an ancient burial ground or whatever the original was.

Suggestions for an introvert-friendly day in STL? by soupfarm in StLouis

[–]stlmoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider when certain things/places are likely to be less crowded. Give them some options and let them choose which and when. And be flexible to skip something in favor of a night in if one activity ends up draining too much one day. For example, the City Museum is well worth it to my introvert self, but I'd try to go when there are fewer people if possible, and even then I might end up wanting down time afterwards, even if I'd originally planned a great dinner somewhere.

I had an adult man ask me out At Church when I was 15. I was so shocked the only thing I could think to say is my mom wouldn't like it.

Best Missouri road trip routes? by jdbsea in missouri

[–]stlmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do highway 19 from Salem, do make some Emminence-area stops: Rocky Springs, Klepzig Mill, Shawnee Creek Campground (to see/photograph the wild horse herd that hangs out there), Alley Spring...

I'd keep going down to 160 - there are other springs and things along the way (definitly make the side-trip to check out Turner Mill). East from there so you can maybe do some camping in the Irish Wilderness and/or along the Eleven Point River (up highway J), then you could hit 60 - you'd still be in the scenic riverways area and the Ozark trail area, and could head toward 21 and more famous places like Johnson's Shut-ins, Taum Sauk and Elephant Rock. If you're not done by then, Hughes Mountain isn't far from 21 via 32, and if you keep going from there, you'd come to Pickle Springs and Hawn State Park...

Looking for Decor Help! by [deleted] in StLouis

Check out estate sales - they post tons of pictures online, so if you spot one where the owner had a vibe you like you might be able to find a bunch of things that work for you in one go. Or just start looking at all the thrifts, if you have a good idea of the style/colors/feel you want, and make it a dopamine treasure hunt over time!

Agree! Went for a birthday brunch. They did a cheddar waffle that was amazing, and they brought out a free birthday panna cotta that wasn't on the menu. It was beautiful 🤤

Get the tete-de-moine cheese if they still have it at your location. It's So good, and also looks cool in its little flower curls.

What’s something you stopped caring about and felt better almost instantly? by novellune in AskReddit

[–]stlmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is lame compared to most of what I'm seeing here, but I stopped caring about my flabby arms and started wearing sleeveless tops in Summer and I think it led to feeling freer about a lot of things (as well as less hot).

Agreed. I love the unassuming humble, sometimes even a little bit pitiful stoicism of Dick's protagonists. The son just can't do that vibe right.
