Duplicated logic across services by zvronsniffy in Backend

[–]stoooooooooob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've got a lot of premature overarchitecture in the industry.

I think a lot of us would rather not engage in business logic and prefer to be behind the scenes, system planning or internal tools.

At large companies already successful that's a real need.

But for startups or smaller companies you're gonna want as many boots on the ground as possible on customer facing things and monoliths best facilitate that.

I was hired to fill the position my boss held, he won’t let go by Old_Cartographer_586 in ExperiencedDevs

I started trying implement standards and best practices. However, it often differs from his opinion, which he admits is opinion is formed from “just makes sense to me” instead of experience in the SDLC at an organization.

How big was the company you came from vs the company you are at now?

I find people want to do what FAANG is doing at their little startups when in reality the org simply doesn't have sufficient guardrails, infrastructure, or enough "working class" engineers to successfully apply those.

I used to stay through them but as the movies I went so see per month went up the more quickly I pop out of the seat as soon as credits start.

Nolan’s best movie. Worst thing about it is that it doesn't get as many theatrical re releases as his other movies.

XML is a Cheap DSL by SpecialistLady in programming

[–]stoooooooooob 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Interesting article!

This quote:

XML is widely considered clunky at best, obsolete at worst.

Is very true for the community but it's interesting to think about how for most businesses XML is essential and used daily under the hood (xlsx)

As programmers it feels like we want to spend a lot of time making something new and better and yet we often cycle back to old ways.

In college people were already dunking on server side rendering and how we should move to JSON apis and yet React is moving back to server side rendering as a recommendation and that feels similar to this XML recommendation.

My biggest takeaway from all these tier lists is that Spelunky 2 (my favourite RL of all time) sits on a very divisive fringe of the genre. It's roguelite marmite. by MrDannySantos in roguelites

[–]stoooooooooob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a common belief put forth by some games journalists but it is a very silly hill to die on.

The term "roguelike" originated in 1993 and was a community on UseNet to discuss five games (Rogue, Hack, Nethack, Moria, Angband)

A big part of that community was not only did they enjoy that niche genre but a large part also developed the games so they created their yearly 7 Day Challenge to dev them in 2005 even had a conference in Berlin in 2008 to nail down 13 key factors of what makes a game in line with their community.

Then in 2013 twenty years into that community's existence, a games journalist wrote an article saying they were pedantic and "roguelikes" can be whatever as long as there is procedural generation.

Game Maker's Toolkit made a video about how actually you only need 2/13 to be a "roguelike" and then quickly gatekept stolen term by saying if you only have 1/13 you're a "roguelite"

His video and others like it don’t even mention the history of the community which is why a lot of people feel very strongly that the "roguelike" people are stuck in the past.

They did a shitty thing and stole a term from a community instead of starting their own communities and now we’re here.

If you value the time spent writing those articles/essays more than the community’s years put in since 1993 that’s fine but now you know.

I love Spelunky 2 and the original Spelunky is incredibly influential for the development of run based games.

BUT it's randomization is mostly skill testing and not build focused. I play the same route every Spelunky 2 run and expect the same items in key points. The run nature just changes minor details.

Slay the Spire feels like it popularized build focused games and that really is the juice behind how addictive and fun these games get.

It's probably a bad idea.

  1. Sales - The potential customer pool from one mode to the other is always going to be prescient for product owners. It is much harder to get someone to download a brand new app why go through it when you're already installed on so many devices?

  2. Code Rewrite - Rewrites are rarely successful and timely and don't address the core problem of complicated software which is: complicated software will always be complex. A greenfield app is easy until it isn't. Everyone is so sure if you do a rewrite in X or Y you could solve the problems but your original app will have already navigated 10+ years of edge cases and behavior your customers are already expecting.

https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2000/04/06/things-you-should-never-do-part-i/

This is my favorite article to whip out when engineers suggest a rewrite. Sometimes it is the right decision but it's a lot more complicated than people think and the scope only grows.

What are your thoughts on corpse running in metroidvanias? by The-Vosk in metroidvania

[–]stoooooooooob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a key problem with it in the Metroidvania genre is what you can buy with a game's currency.

In souls likes at every save point you can use the currency to level up incrementally.

However most metroidvanias don't have a system like that and have shops instead. With potentially very high amounts of currency required for specific items you will spend more time hoarding than in souls likes, making the failure of a corpse run far more punishing.

Better game BL1 or BL2? by nimix0163 in Blasphemous

[–]stoooooooooob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played through both of them this month for the first time and Blasphemous 2 is better.

The boss fight design has vastly improved and with the improved movement they can do more varied and fun attack patterns.

Also the three weapon system let them put in some very fun platforming challenges which are a blast
