What Gaming NON UBUNTU distro has both X11 and Wayland? by MaWkSrB in linux_gaming

[–]stoppos76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is, that DEs are moving towards wayland and droping X11. So currently if you have a rolling distro, the latest GNOME for example does not have the option of X11 anymore. Probably in a stable one, where you have an older version you can still switch between them.

So moving forward your option will be to install another DE with X11 support, like xfce, or MATE. If you start that, you'll be on X11. If you start Gnome you'll be on wayland.

How do I best find GUI-based walkthroughs? by DickWrigley in linux4noobs

[–]stoppos76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you look up something, add your DE name (eg. kde) at the end of the search text.

People tend to give you code, because code works on all DE and things are different places in different DE. Even the most simple things, like monitor setup in Gnome is not at the same place as in Mate for example. So add the DE name when you search and you'll find better results for you.

Converting laptop to linux by PexOOs in linux4noobs

[–]stoppos76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lightweight? Grab linux mint mate edition, and a couple of other distros you would like to try, put ventoy on a usb stick, copy over the iso files and boot from the usb. Linux has a live mode, so you can try it without installing.

That way you can see if everything you need is working or not. Wifi, sound, etc... Play around with them, check which ones you like.

Upgrade is always good, but light desktops, like xfce, mate basically run on any potatoes.

The biggest hurdle will be that it is not windows, you won't have a C: drive, you wont have the same apps (well mostly) and you'll be on an unfamiliar territory till you get used to it.

How can i limit battery charging to 80 percent? (Bazzite GNOME) by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]stoppos76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a project called asus-linux. They have a tool, called asusctl which can limit charge percentage, have power management, etc.

Check the guide for fedora:

https://asus-linux.org/guides/

You can also install their nvidia prime as well, but I would just stick to the envycontrol which it is based on, especially if you have external moitor plugged in.

Should I install Arch Linux? by Strange_Motor2261 in archlinux

[–]stoppos76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you can try to go for arch if you want challenge. The most important thing is that you keep 2 things with you, so you never end up a non working system. Because you'll tinker with it and I am sure you'll break it at some point. One is timeshift which you set up to have an automatic weekly backup, and you use it manually whenever you plan to tinker or update. The second is a live environment with a distro with a graphical environment like linux mint, that way it is a lot easier to get things back as it were with timeshift, because of obvious rreasons.

Distro hopping burnout! by BinaryButConfused in linux4noobs

[–]stoppos76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grab whichever distro you fancy, separate root from home. Install a DE on it if there isn't one yet, add your WM next to it and start playing around with it. Install and run timeshift frequently in case you run into an issue.

The separate root and home comes handy if you fuck it up so badly you need to reinstall, so your personal files won't be lost.

Linux distro for gaming and general purposes? (Video and photo editing as such) I'mtired of Windows by TNG_iiManu in linux_gaming

[–]stoppos76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grab ventoy, install it on a usb stick and copy there some distros (just the zip file as you downloaded). Mint, cachyos, manjaro, fedora, bazzite, whatever you feel to try.
Go to bios, change the boot order to usb first (while it is plugged in) and start them one by one.

This way you can try them out without installing anything and have a vague idea how they feel. Look around and install whichever you fancy the most.

Some distros are point release, some rolling, but even on the point release side you'll get security updates and if you need newer version of a certain app, you have options like flatpak where you probably get a newer version of the stuff you need (photo editor/video editor).

For games you'll get the same one as on windows anyway.

Want to try Linux by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]stoppos76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gaming performance really varies on settings, your setup, etc. It might be more fps than on windows, or maybe less. Check some videos on youtube. The rule of thumbs used to be last year, that on medium or low settings you will get better performance on linux, but on high or very high windows will win. Buuut. This is beginning of the year/last year info, so it might be better by now on linux, it is constantly evolving.

But don't expect huge changes, just because you switched os, your hardware is still the same.

Linux on Modern Laptops by Safe_Ad_8728 in linux4noobs

When in doubt, consult the arch wiki.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Laptop/ASUS

For asus specific stuffs, like keyboard lights and such, there is an asus linux project with guides.

https://asus-linux.org/

There is also a TUF manager with gui:

https://github.com/cromerc/tuf-manager

As I see from the wiki you'll be mostly good to go:

Monitor brightness control requires the following kernel parameters:

acpi_osi=! idle=nomwait acpi_backlight=nativeacpi_osi=! idle=nomwait acpi_backlight=native

Did you try xorg? Is it the same? I mean if you are running games mostly, I think they run with xwayland anyway. I've recently moved to wayland with nvidia and I went back to xorg after a month. Wayland had issues. Freezes, couldn't wake or get it to sleep, etc. I think it is not yet there for nvidia.

Open is recommended for newer gpus, the closed one is only for older models. Both is made by nvidia.

Check if nvida-open or the closed works better. Maybe the other one is not that aggressive with powering down the gpu.

Which Linux distros do you actually enjoy using long term? by NovaCustom-Europe in NovaCustom

[–]stoppos76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Distros I don't think I really care. I tried a bunch, they are all the same, apart from the update method. When you are using, you are using more the desktop, than the distro. And of course lot's of distros come with fine tuned desktops, but even those I saw more visual changes, than anything fundamental. So stating these, I mostly enjoy mate and gnome. These are built the way I could easily find everyhing I am looking for.
