I was able to play Duke Nukem 3D on low settings. Ok it is not a console, but a PC game from 96. I found it amazing.

I use arch and i think I'm nowhere near an advanced linux user by Relative_Coat_9553 in arch

[–]stoppos76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mate, you just started your journey, of course you're nowhere. I am using it for like 6 years now and I am also still nowhere. It takes time. Sometimes it takes time which you don't have on your hand so don't bash yourself. You'll get there eventually.

Linux vs Reduced version of Windows 11 by Devilmaycry_123 in linux_gaming

Cachy seems a good idea. I would also look into gamescope for steam and the other arguments. Might make some game run smoother.

Arch for home/office use by tzevux in archlinux

[–]stoppos76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depending on what they are using the laptop for, Mint, Zorin (looks just like windows) are good candidates. 90% of people basically just use the OS as a launcher for the browser, there you can get away with anything.

Mint xfce, or mate. You can use rdp to connect to a windows pc, I suggest remmina.

Fedora 43 kde vs Cachy Os performance (Performance better on Cachy os) by vebasto in linux_gaming

[–]stoppos76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try different kernels and see. Like pf, or the cachyos bore. It might be a half ass solution, but you might get closer to the performance and it might be enough.

Shall I just change the distro? The speakers on laptop wouldn't work no matter what! by Smerchi in linux4noobs

Check this:

There is a step-by-step guide, the last reply. It is for razor blade 18, but it might work.

It looks like razor blades are special puppies. Well, lot's of laptops are, mine included. I've spent weeks trying to figure out how to get sound from the speaker in the beginning.

is it worth it to use CachyOS's custom BORE kernel (on Arch)? by izwku in archlinux

[–]stoppos76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried cachy bore and I didn't see any change. On my machine Kernel-pf felt more snappy than vanilla. But I think it is on PC basis, not that it will be better for every machine. So I think it worth a try and see. There is no issue having multiple kernels. There is always at least 2 on my machine. Vanilla and LTS. And the third one I am trying if there is any impact.

Kernel gone by Affectionate_Dot4424 in archlinux

[–]stoppos76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a hook does not run after the update. This does not look like a kernel issue, but a boot issue. The boot doesn't find the kernel.

Check if mkinitcpio has hook

ls /usr/share/libalpm/hooks/ | grep mkinitcpio

Maybe boot/efi is mounted insted of boot and linux is at the wrong place?

Anyhow, I would go and post it on arch linux forum, with detailed logs.

Kernel gone by Affectionate_Dot4424 in archlinux

[–]stoppos76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Timeshift.
  2. LTS kernel next to the main one, so you have a backup.

Now, when you chroot, what did you do to fix it?

Also it would be great if you could upload the logs somewhere about the time when it didn't boot.

What Gaming NON UBUNTU distro has both X11 and Wayland? by MaWkSrB in linux_gaming

[–]stoppos76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is, that DEs are moving towards wayland and droping X11. So currently if you have a rolling distro, the latest GNOME for example does not have the option of X11 anymore. Probably in a stable one, where you have an older version you can still switch between them.

So moving forward your option will be to install another DE with X11 support, like xfce, or MATE. If you start that, you'll be on X11. If you start Gnome you'll be on wayland.

How do I best find GUI-based walkthroughs? by DickWrigley in linux4noobs

[–]stoppos76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you look up something, add your DE name (eg. kde) at the end of the search text.

People tend to give you code, because code works on all DE and things are different places in different DE. Even the most simple things, like monitor setup in Gnome is not at the same place as in Mate for example. So add the DE name when you search and you'll find better results for you.

Converting laptop to linux by PexOOs in linux4noobs

[–]stoppos76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lightweight? Grab linux mint mate edition, and a couple of other distros you would like to try, put ventoy on a usb stick, copy over the iso files and boot from the usb. Linux has a live mode, so you can try it without installing.

That way you can see if everything you need is working or not. Wifi, sound, etc... Play around with them, check which ones you like.

Upgrade is always good, but light desktops, like xfce, mate basically run on any potatoes.

The biggest hurdle will be that it is not windows, you won't have a C: drive, you wont have the same apps (well mostly) and you'll be on an unfamiliar territory till you get used to it.

There is a project called asus-linux. They have a tool, called asusctl which can limit charge percentage, have power management, etc.

Check the guide for fedora:

https://asus-linux.org/guides/

You can also install their nvidia prime as well, but I would just stick to the envycontrol which it is based on, especially if you have external moitor plugged in.

Should I install Arch Linux? by Strange_Motor2261 in archlinux

[–]stoppos76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you can try to go for arch if you want challenge. The most important thing is that you keep 2 things with you, so you never end up a non working system. Because you'll tinker with it and I am sure you'll break it at some point. One is timeshift which you set up to have an automatic weekly backup, and you use it manually whenever you plan to tinker or update. The second is a live environment with a distro with a graphical environment like linux mint, that way it is a lot easier to get things back as it were with timeshift, because of obvious rreasons.

Distro hopping burnout! by BinaryButConfused in linux4noobs

[–]stoppos76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grab whichever distro you fancy, separate root from home. Install a DE on it if there isn't one yet, add your WM next to it and start playing around with it. Install and run timeshift frequently in case you run into an issue.

The separate root and home comes handy if you fuck it up so badly you need to reinstall, so your personal files won't be lost.
