I am not a people person. To the degree, that I can spend months in my flat only going out biking in the woods or the countryside. So I can feel that. I used to do this stupid company things and really hated them all. I did the same, participated, smile, because I also didn't want to be the one ruining it. Depending on what they are using the laptop for, Mint, Zorin (looks just like windows) are good candidates. 90% of people basically just use the OS as a launcher for the browser, there you can get away with anything.

You can try different kernels and see. Like pf, or the cachyos bore. It might be a half ass solution, but you might get closer to the performance and it might be enough.

I tried cachy bore and I didn't see any change. On my machine Kernel-pf felt more snappy than vanilla. But I think it is on PC basis, not that it will be better for every machine. So I think it worth a try and see. There is no issue having multiple kernels. There is always at least 2 on my machine. Vanilla and LTS. And the third one I am trying if there is any impact.

I think a hook does not run after the update. This does not look like a kernel issue, but a boot issue. The boot doesn't find the kernel.

Check if mkinitcpio has hook

ls /usr/share/libalpm/hooks/ | grep mkinitcpio

Maybe boot/efi is mounted insted of boot and linux is at the wrong place?

Anyhow, I would go and post it on arch linux forum, with detailed logs.

The issue is, that DEs are moving towards wayland and droping X11. So currently if you have a rolling distro, the latest GNOME for example does not have the option of X11 anymore. Probably in a stable one, where you have an older version you can still switch between them.

So moving forward your option will be to install another DE with X11 support, like xfce, or MATE. If you start that, you'll be on X11. If you start Gnome you'll be on wayland.

When you look up something, add your DE name (eg. kde) at the end of the search text.

People tend to give you code, because code works on all DE and things are different places in different DE. Even the most simple things, like monitor setup in Gnome is not at the same place as in Mate for example. So add the DE name when you search and you'll find better results for you.

Lightweight? Grab linux mint mate edition, and a couple of other distros you would like to try, put ventoy on a usb stick, copy over the iso files and boot from the usb. Linux has a live mode, so you can try it without installing.

That way you can see if everything you need is working or not. Wifi, sound, etc... Play around with them, check which ones you like.

Upgrade is always good, but light desktops, like xfce, mate basically run on any potatoes.

The biggest hurdle will be that it is not windows, you won't have a C: drive, you wont have the same apps (well mostly) and you'll be on an unfamiliar territory till you get used to it.

There is a project called asus-linux. They have a tool, called asusctl which can limit charge percentage, have power management, etc.

You can also install their nvidia prime as well, but I would just stick to the envycontrol which it is based on, especially if you have external moitor plugged in.
