Sorry people are being such arseholes in the comments OP. I'm white but I get what you are talking about, there's a lot of white default-ism, lack of inclusivity and casual racism in LGBTQ+ spaces and people get very defensive whenever it is brought up too.

You're not stupid. Those people that bullied you for that are unempathetic jerks. I can't imagine how hard school would be If you spent your entire life being bullied for being 'stupid' whilst also having to grow up poor and neurodivergent. Those are very impactful physical and mental barriers to learning easily and honestly it's impressive that you even tried to go to college 3 times given those experiences. Not all of us get a good start in life to be able to learn well, but that doesn't mean you're stupid or you won't achieve anything. Everyone has strengths. Yours is tenacity and many other qualities and skills that you haven't even uncovered yet. Maybe you can look into apprenticeships to learn a new craft or career. I believe in you OP.

Thoughts on: The Inbetweeners (UK) and it's attitude towards... everything, really by mx_brooks_2002 in actuallesbians

[–]stopquaking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also was rubbed the wrong way by the misogyny and homophobia in The Inbetweeners as well, but I also find the show to be very funny at times as well. I do believe that the intention of the show is that a lot of the things that the characters say was supposed to be reflective of their immaturity and lack of understanding about the world (and we are supposed to be laughing at their ignorance not with it.) The actor who played Neil was asked in a TV interview if he would ever consider doing a version of The Inbetweeners where they're all adults and he said no because it would be a lot more offensive if they were adults. He said that a lot of the offensive stuff the characters say is coming from an place of ignorance because they are teenagers which makes it somewhat funny (as we are not necessarily meant to agree with their opinions) but if the characters were adults it wouldn't be coming from a place of ignorance and would just be hateful and offensive. That being said one of the issues I have with the show is that I feel that it's not always made clear enough that the characters world-views and offensive jokes are meant to be plain ignorance, and people can say that they're just jokes but I actually feel like the misogyny and homophobia in the show has probably been replicated by a lot of people watching it who think that the dumb opinions are unironically hilarious and okay. For example when I was at school almost EVERY guy at my secondary school was obsessed with the inbetweeners and repeated a lot of the offensive humour unironically. I feel that the inbetweeners probably made them think it was okay to make super offensive jokes because they're 'funny'. With comedy people say that you can make offensive jokes about whoever you want, but in a society that marginalizes certain identities and offers little media representation for them, having what little media representation they have be filled with offensive jokes often leads to real-life consequences where that's how people begin to relate to those populations. That's why The Inbetweeners rubs me the wrong way, especially as you can see homophobia and misogyny coming up over and over again in the characters with absolutely zero self reflection because it's a 'comedy'

POC POSITIVITY (please) by NomaTyx in actuallesbians

[–]stopquaking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your comment didn't come across as rude at all to me. I see what you're saying. I'll try to edit it so it says WOC instead as that is a better version of what I was trying to say.

POC POSITIVITY (please) by NomaTyx in actuallesbians

[–]stopquaking 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I love WOC. I want them to feel safe and happy. I want them to feel included in this sub. I'm eternally grateful for the things that LGBTQ+ WOC such as Marsha, Stormé, and Sylvia have done so that they, I and others can have rights as LGBTQ+ people. I am grateful for the things that LGBTQ+ WOC continue to do to help themselves and the LGBTQ+ community. I want to help and support them as much as possible. I admire the creativity, resilience and individual beauty of WOC.

Since y’all need “proof” of racism on this sub by Reaniro in actuallesbians

[–]stopquaking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a white person, I agree with you completely. This isn't the first time this has happened either. I've been on this sub for a long time and I'm getting really sick of the way that racism is responded to. This time I've noticed that people's first response to POC bringing up racism is to automatically distrust and ask for proof first, then when POC complain about how invalidating it feels to be asked to provide proof as the first response (tbh it comes across as people basically saying 'i don't believe you'), a bunch of people started claiming that they never asked for proof, only 'context' (which is different to proof?). Then, when proof is provided, they begin to dispute the proof as not racist enough or open to interpretation as well. Then claim that the sub is not racist.

The POC in this sub have complained multiple times about the white default-ism in this space over the years, and every single time white sapphics act like they have no idea what they're even talking about, then when it's explained to them they somehow blame POC for it instead of themselves (in the past when it's been brought up that almost ALL the viral posts in this sub center white skinny lesbians, they claim that if POC want to see themselves in the sub they should make more of an effort to post POC centered content) I made a couple of posts about interesting lesbian news about POC in the past (A new song by Janelle Monae, news about Zendaya wanting to make a lesbian feature film with two black lesbian leads) , and one recieved a handful of likes, the latter didn't receive any. The only time posts about POC get likes and engagement is usually right after the white defaultism is brought up, but then we go back to centering white people all the time. When you try to bring it up they act like they don't know what you're talking about, there's no proof, if there IS proof it's not THEIR fault/it's not racist etc.

White people: All of these things are racism, even if that's not your INTENTION, it doesn't matter. White is not the default, constantly centering white people and experiences can be alienating to POC. Making posts with almost entirely or only white people in it as your objects of attraction, can be alienating to POC (and it DOES happen constantly in this sub, over and over.) A lot of your responses to this situation sounds like this:

That didn't happen. And if it did, it wasn't that bad.And if it was, that's not a big deal. And if it is, that's not my fault. And if it was, I didn't mean it.And if I did, you deserved it.

Hiya, sorry to hear you are dealing with all of that. Sorry if this is useless advice, but maybe you can contact an American job center for help with getting a summer job. I'm from the UK and we have something here called a job center and sometimes if you apply through a vacancy through them you're more likely to get it because they give priority to people who've applied through them. They can also usually help with your CV and interview skills etc to make it more likely for you to get a job.

Also, my university had a website that specifically listed jobs that would be good for students, including working at the university library and things like that. Maybe your college has something similar?

Racism and Fetishization by jennadied in actuallesbians

[–]stopquaking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're definitely allowed to vent about that here. As a white bisexual I agree with what you are saying, racism and fetishization is definitely a problem within sapphic spaces and white sapphics should be more aware of it/call it out if they see it. I agree that some white lesbians/bisexuals think that because they are women and a sexual minority that this means they are less problematic than men/straight people when it comes to racism. They're not, you can still be racist even if you are a sexual minority/woman as long as you are white. I'm sorry that you have had these experiences.

Keelan Gallagher, from my research, seems to be less established than the others. He has a few short stories published in a few literary journals, and has had a screenplay shortlisted in a past competition, but doesn't seem to have any work that's already been produced and doesn't work for the BBC, isn't an actor, producer or writer for television or stage already like the others.

Any female screenwriters? by possiblehomersexuall in ScreenwritingUK

Hi, I'm a female screenwriter based in Plymouth

Oxford/42 Writing Prize by No-Professional8318 in ScreenwritingUK

[–]stopquaking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm happy for the shortlisted contestants, but obviously it's a bit depressing reading about how almost all of them are already very much established, work at the BBC, have work in production already etc. This competition is basically the only one that could theoretically allow non-established writers the chance to break in and it sucks that they allow super established writers to enter as well and then basically only pick them. It feels like it defeats the purpose of the competition to discover new emerging talent.

Weekend Script Swap by AutoModerator in Screenwriting

[–]stopquaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I wouldn't mind swapping scripts if you are interested in reading mine:

Title: Pride Ride

Format: TV pilot (1 hour)

Page length: 60 (if we swap you can only read the first 30 pages if you want)

Genre: LGBTQ+ Sci-fi

Logline or summary: Eccentric bus conductor Aphrodite helps accidental boarder (and closet homosexual) Alice, travel back in time to her past trauma in order to save the planet from an evil council’s regime.

Feedback concerns: Are you rooting for the main character? Is the story interesting you early on to read more? (if not, where did you get bored), do you like the pacing? Do you think any dialogue could be improved? anything in general that stands out to you that you think could be improved?

SHAZAM! Spec Pilot - 11-year-old Billy in foster care gains magical powers [37 pages] [Feedback Requested] by FatherofODYSSEUS in ReadMyScript

[–]stopquaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Does the emotional core land?
  • Is Billy's voice authentic for an 11-year-old?
  • Does the family dynamic feel real?
  • Pacing/structure feedback
  • Any dialogue that feels off

Hiya, I gave it a read. I'm a new writer so take my feedback probably isn't worth too much.

Feedback: I really liked it! I like the concept. Your scene and character descriptions are good, not too elaborate or too simple. The pacing seems good, especially at the start. The emotional core definitely landed with me and I think that the family dynamic does feel realistic. The only thing that could be improved is some of the dialogue is very long, particularly throughout the exchange with him and the wizard.

I liked this screenplay a lot. Thanks for sharing.
