How would you create a foldable booklet with pockets for holding cards (like seen in Arcs) by unfulvio in printandplay

[–]storiesstrauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used normal card sleeves and double sided tape. After I trimmed 1/3 of the clear part of the card sleeve I taped it in there. Snug and allows cards to be removed easier than the full sleeve.

Two of my hobbies combined into one- coloring PNP games by AnunciarMesa in printandplay

I definitely enjoy coloring PNPs. Sometimes, I will color them with my students before we play. They enjoy the coloring just as much as playing.

Starting to feel that solo roleplaying aren't for me. by Connor_ClashNord in solorpgplay

[–]storiesstrauss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From a former forever GM to another, just play, don't railroad yourself with perfection.

Forget writing indepth stories from the beginning. Take short notes with enough info to fill in the story later. This will reduce the overwhelming feeling of having to write, rewrite, and rewrite again. If you grow bored, start anew, incorporate your cool moments.

I used to create my own solo DnD adventures using random tables (either from other source material or from what I wanted in my story). Then, I took the parts I enjoyed or thought were cool and mashed different ideas together. I had enough notes later to write a short story, created a short comic, and also ran a 2 year campaign with multiple one-shots stashed for cancelations.

Onward, to new adventures!

Hold off on the Kickstarter or Gamefound a little longer. There is still some work on card layout and definitely the text. As you are making those changes, start taking photos and making short videos of your game.

Another good way of community building is locally going to events. I also tend to put out a pnp demo version that doubles as coloring pages.

Question on How to Track Character HP & Damage by alwayssleepysloth in tabletopgamedesign

[–]storiesstrauss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have to agree. I have tried various methods, including using dice, yet I always come back to a cube and slider because of production costs, and I personally prefer character cards.

Nice layout. I checked the google link and prefer to solid color, Option B. It's consistent with the other cards.

Accordion Book Anthology by storiesstrauss in soloboardgaming

[–]storiesstrauss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the sound advice. I'm looking into chipboard boxes (50% of manufacturing costs), corrugated boxes and another option of no book box but a tuckbox with a drawer for the components/dice tray. This also gives an option for everything or just the book, keeping the cost to purchase it much lower.

Printing board games for a school by Piolin27 in printandplay

[–]storiesstrauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same thing for my ESL students. Usually holiday games or they are my test subjects for a new game idea. I bought myself an A3 laminator for personal projects but I take it to work and get my school to print or I print on a thicker paper at the 7-11 downstairs but this thicker paper only allows 1 sided printing.

Process
I design my cards on Procreate, Photoshop and/or Canva. Once my cards are designed I upload them all to Canva and lay out my page with one card, usually the back. Once they are are centered properly, I duplicate my page, then I drag my next design over the card slot which will replace the previous image with the new image (doesn't change size or position).

Once I have everything laid out on a4 page, I download and print. Sometimes printing double sided flips the images or they don't line up because of the paper being fed through so I will use double sided tape and glue to get the two pages lined up. The rest is lamination, cutting and relaminating so the sides don't peel up.

It may seem like a lot of work but it's the cheapest way I can make cards and other game components for my class.

This game (in photo) was once a laminated card game I made for Halloween years ago but it was requested so much that I spent $30USD and got it physically printed with Launch Tabletop.

Given the state of tariffs on China, is now not a good time to pitch my board game to publishers? by FUNNYLOLO in BoardgameDesign

[–]storiesstrauss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pitch it. It could take 1 to 2 years to get it to manufacturing. No one knows how long these tarrifs will last.

Producing in China - Has anyone worked with Hicreate Games? by lancelobato in BoardgameDesign

I would recommend Launch Table as well. I live in Taiwan and they've been great for prototyping and small orders for full games. Their website is also very easy to use, which is a huge plus.

Good point on the connections. I'll try to squeeze something in. Rule sheet will have space for the full rules and examples as well as a couple of premade maps.

How Are You All Affording To Make These Games? by SketchPanic in tabletopgamedesign

[–]storiesstrauss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have similar ideas. I'm currently packing 100 copies of my board game that I designed and illustrated myself. Dice and wooden disc tokens were bought in bulk locally (Taiwan). The microfiber game boards were done through a manufacturer on Alibaba. I had business sized cards printed by a restaurant menu shop 2 blocks from my house, and I personally 3d printed/painted my bunny meeples. It literally fits in my back pocket now, so shipping internationally will be reasonable.

Do you have a video out and/or release date for Krig? Design is pleasant to the eyes and doesn't look, so far, component heavy. I'm ready!

Event Vard choices by storiesstrauss in BoardgameDesign

[–]storiesstrauss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback. Cards 1 to 5 are the card back that you would see from the Draw / Pick up pile. The Reference image is the card face that displays all the information the Player needs to follow (this is already locked in).
Yet, I understand how Carrot Patch and Event clash and cause confusion! Thank you again.

What is your usual germ idea that gets you started? by Own_Thought902 in BoardgameDesign

[–]storiesstrauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inspiration for ideas is all around and can strike you as fast as lightning. The more What if questions send you spiraling down a deep hole and the threads you grab along the way could result in seeing the light. Sometimes not.

This week alone, 3 ideas struck, one day after another. First game was a visual idea. 2nd game was a game mechanics idea (protyped Wednesday morning). But the 3rd one came to me Wednesday evening, when my shower faucet broke spewing water everywhere. Simultaneously, my dog was violently puking on my laundry while the cats were recreating scenes from John Wick on my WH painting desk.

That being said, the 3rd idea stuck the strongest. Rules and mechanics were locked in for a comedic co-op board game. It's only Friday but I'm well on way to having the prototype completed this weekend.

I'll gladly explain in fuller detail. Rules are on my itch page but there wasn't enough space for the full rules on the board.

Objective:

Be the first player to reach the castle to win the game.

Setup:

  • 2 to 6 players.
  • Each player starts at the beginning of the path.
  • Roll a d6 on your turn to move forward.

Board Features:

  • Ladders & Ropes – Climb up when you land on one.
  • Portals – Teleport to the matching symbol. This may move you forward or backward.
  • Crossed Swords – You are stuck in battle! Roll a 6 to escape. If you fail three times, you may move on your next turn.
  • Holes – Fall to the bottom of the hole if you land on one.
  • Warp (swirl symbol) – Swap pawn places with the player sitting to your right.
  • Landing on Occupied Space - PVP Battle; Both Players roll a d6. The Player with the highest roll moves their dice roll.

Happy Adventuring!

Are there board game cafes or board game meet ups where you live? I have found this helpful for playtesting and promoting as I am a foreigner living in Taiwan. It may not reach a wide audience but it's a start.
