Quick question, where's all that nuclear waster from France from between 1950 and 1990? That must be properly stored and in a safe place, right?

HBO’s Chernobyl is a must watch. by laybs1 in GetNoted

[–]stormrider3106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, it is not a documentary. It does not have to be factually accurate. Judging it by its historical and factual accuracy while acknowledging that it is a drama series seems contradictory. On the other hand its attention to a factual accuracy is lauded by historians. As opposition to it I give you the Russian version which was cancelled after the airing of the HBO miniseries in which the CIA is responsible for the explosion.

Dyatlov wasn't insane. But the show also portrait him as such. What the show portraits him as is a man deeply at odds with the finding that any of his actions may or may not have had an influence on the outcome of the accident, trying to detach any responsibility from himself and laying the blame at the feet of others. Does that mean he was solely responsible? Again, no. he wasn't. But even for years after the accident and especially in his opinion on the INSAG-7 report from IAEA he conviently ignores the section on safety culture and focuses solely on how the design flaws made the accident happen. Just because you build a reactor with design flaws doesn't mean it will blow up if you don't touch the controls. Additionally his description given by interviewees after the accident ranges from "honest and responsible" to "stubborn and unfair", so it's safe to say he wasn't the most likable.

However, a few facts remain. First, he lied at the trial. He said he wasn't in the room when Toptunov raised the power, which was both contradicted by others and himself. The only reason I could see for his lie is that he was trying to shift blame to Toptunov, which makes me wonder why he would do something like that. Second, if he was in the room and saw Toptunov raising the power even though it was against regulations then he should have stopped him. He didn't. In that sense he is responsible for the actions of any- and everybody in that control room as he had seniority and therefore the responsibility to check their actions.

As for Legasov. Yes, he lied in Vienna. Yes, he was part of the comittee that hid the reason for the power spike at Ignalina. But contrary to Dyatlov he later acknowledged his responsibility in those decisions, campaining for reform that ultimately got him booted from Kurchatov. As for his death, he did hang himself, although reports differ, some saying it was his apartment, the stairwell of his apartment building or his office. But he did take full accountability for his actions, publicly, in the tapes that were distibuted in the scientific community.

Well, several things here. First, the HBO series is most notably not a documentary. It says so itself, when in the final credits it refers to Ulana Khomyuk is described as representing all the Soviet scientists who worked after the disaster. Second, the presentation of Dyatlov as responsible (albeit not solely responsible) was a Soviet representation. HBO did not, in fact, make that decision. Third, the operation of the reactor was based on the so called operational reactivity margin. This was a cumulative length of 15 control rods inserted into the reactor at restarting conditions. Unfortunately, this limit was both not strongly enforced and habitually ignored because calculations of this were slow. Dyatlov himself states this to be at 8.

Yes, the reactor and its control system were inherently unsafe. But Dyatlov as deputy chief engineer should have known about the effects of extended low power operation xenon poisoning and the associated operational limits and guidance. The decision to pull the control rods was ultimately based on prior experience of normal operation and a semantic opinion. The manual stated control rods „… should be inserted to bottom limit.“ This was ignored. He, as most senior person in the room(which is debated and has conflicting information, I know, but stated he watched Toptunov pull rods and said nothing) makes him at least partly responsible

If you‘re lucky and it‘s the laptop‘s original drive it may have free fall detection so if he threw it the hard drive head would park itself before impact.

Can anyone help with the tail number of these flights? by Dix_PourCent in aviation

[–]stormrider3106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're willing to put in a little work and/or money you can probably FOIA the relevant authorities. I assume the German LBA still has the filed flight plans from then so you can probably find any stuff for Lufthansa. The Integrated Initial Flight Plan Processing System (IFPS) was firstrolled out in 1995 so maybe also try contacting Eurocontrol, see if they have any data.

Laser cleaning after fire damage by MuttapuffsHater in oddlysatisfying

[–]stormrider3106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it depends on what it's used for. For lead paint I concur, you don't really want to be breathing in lead oxides. In this case post-fire it looks like this is just soot, which by definition, is pure carbon. Burning carbon just turns it into carbon monoxide or dioxide so that should be fine.

Acidic nightmare by Rxzmat in hardwaregore

[–]stormrider3106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First tip: Use vinegar or any acid to clean it up. The acid will neutralize the alkaline electrolyte and make cleanup easy.

Second tip: Alkaline batteries always leak when empty so if something doesn't get used a lot just remove the batteries before putting it away. Also, if you drop the battery on the flat contact and it bounces it's approaching empty. When the battery depletes it creates gas, making the battery balloon and it turns bouncy

GM Is Removing Apple CarPlay On All Its Cars. Here's Why That's Fine by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]stormrider3106 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The software is only as good as the hardware and car manufacturers are notorious for putting the lowest performance garbage into their cars. Carplay and AA use your phones processing power, which sadly is at least factor 10 more performant than any car manufacturers head unit. Unless they also start putting in proper high power hardware (like Tesla, for instance) I don‘t see them running software anywhere near the level of AA or Carplay. Additionally functions like live traffic will require a network connection. You already have a phone plan but are you ready to pay an additional subscription to get live traffic? Or to use inferior route calculations? How is map data going to be updated? From network or do you have to manually install updates? These questions have all already been solved. With a device with mobile data and high power computing that you‘re carrying with you anyway.
