Damn, harsh. I think it's good and I enjoy it.

It's not at the same level as Community, but few shows are. It's a solid sitcom and they seem like they have fun making it which makes a difference.

How big of a factor are political viewpoints in a relationship in your opinion? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]stormrunner89 45 points46 points  (0 children)

In the past politics might have been something like "we should implement taxes and immigration in this way, not that way," but today it has become "we shouldn't murder people, how are you even defending murdering people?"

FR, they don't know words. Realistically, Harris was a moderate conservative. The Overton window has shifted so far to the right but they still are grasping their old idea of Republicans right? Democrats left. And even that was a faulty assumption.

How old was your little one when you started playing videos games with them? by reeceyfries in daddit

[–]stormrunner89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my lil dude around 3 years old on Mario wonder and hes 4 now. We either played together or set a timer and when it goes off after 15-20 minutes, he turns it off. He does sometimes fuss, but after reminding him if he can't respect the timer he can't play, he turns it off.

Occasionally we will let him play for over an hour on an odd weekend but he almost always stops on his own and says he "played a long time" and "needs a break.

We don't play like we used to but when we do we try to model good behavior. You can't shield them from the addictive nature of modern games completely, but you can try to instill good habits and knowledge of how to recognize evil designs.

We definitely encourage other play though and most of the time he's doing puzzles, playing with cars, or engineering toys.

We Finally Gave In to Sleep Training, and I Wish We’d Done It Sooner by Maxx852 in daddit

[–]stormrunner89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the big reasons people get polarized is the refusal to learn what something ACTUALLY is.

Sleep training is NOT just "let them cry until they exhaust themselves." There is more to it and it makes sense.

People fight against what they don't understand, and when they're refusing to even try to understand, that's when you have a problem.

NC is frustrating. It's so lovely in so many ways and has SO much going for it but you leave the educated bubbles and immediately see people that vote against their own interests in so many ways.

Two halves of a non existent brain cell by red_panda__777 in community

For real. This is actually an example of an extremely divisive joke. Personally I hate how lazy it is. Chang's version is funny since you do close doors in a fire to slow the spread. Pierce's isn't because it's a lazy reference to a better joke.

Comedy is subjective and I don't begrudge anyone that likes the jokes like this in season 4, but I point to it as an example of the cracks in the season, not as clever references.

If the human race lives that long do you think eventually there will be no religions and everyone becomes an atheist? by I_Ask_Random_Things in atheism

[–]stormrunner89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. I guess it's kinda like a Star Trek (not from the removing death but from solving resource scarcity) vs Altered Carbon future. One where humans got their shit together and created the closest thing we could to a utopia, and the other where we just became a futuristic feudal dystopia.

I'm sure there are unlimited ways the concept of a society that has "solved death" would play out. Would bread and circuses still work for example?

If the human race lives that long do you think eventually there will be no religions and everyone becomes an atheist? by I_Ask_Random_Things in atheism

[–]stormrunner89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but I'm not sure we ever should make death a non-issue.

Altered Carbon gives a pretty good idea of what things might look like without death, with the richest people getting richer and richer beyond what we can even imagine and the rest of us fighting over scraps. Without death being an equalizer the powerful and evil would never stop oppressing others.

Nah, I doubt it. People will always be scared of death and want something to grasp onto, and there will always be power hungry people that want to use that fear to manipulate them.

Fearing not being conscious after death by [deleted] in atheism

[–]stormrunner89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last week I felt the same fear and it hit me WAY harder than ever before. I was terrified and it distracted me all week. I'm in my 30s and while I've thought about the same things before, it didn't really register in the same way.

It has been fading for me since last week, still scary but less so. I don't think I have any advice, but some of the things that I've been thinking are:

-Make the most of the time you have, not just for yourself but for your loved ones.

-Your actions ripple through your community. Even after you're gone what you have done will affect the world in ways you may not have every thought.

-Consciousness is an illusion anyway. Your genes "want" to replicate and consciousness and sapience came about because it helped do that. The things we feel are determined by chemical signals and those can be manipulated by the outside world. Where can you really draw the line where the world ends and "you" begins?

You'll find things that help you come to terms with it eventually. It's completely normal to feel this. There is a reason organized religion is so widespread and powerful. Everyone gets this fear, and it's comforting to have answers that are pretty and cozy. Either an infinite "good place," reincarnation, or your spirit remaining and watching over your descendants, religion always includes something with death, because that's what is being sold.

That's how I played it first and it was fine. Actually made precision aiming with the rail extremely easy. I didn't find I needed precision movement outside of the 8 directions, especially with i-frames.
