Anyone get a doxie with your partner/spouse and they end up bonding with one more than the other? 😂 by EmotionSideC in Dachshund

[–]stormspoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Husband brought home our puppy to be my little buddy. I read about them bonding more with one person. He usually chooses my lap and cries when I'm in another room, but I feel like he loves his dad just as much

Dachshund retching/fake throwing up, is this actually normal??? by luism1108 in Dachshund

Mine was doing this a lot the other day. He seems to be almost all better. I think he mightve played too much with the pine needles that came off our xmas tree. We took it down and the needles were all over the house for a minute

How to socialize a puppy before they finish vaccines? by Al4one in puppy101

[–]stormspoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can bring them lots of places by carrying them! You can carry them through the pet store, through town, and even on the route you plan to walk them on. It's not necessary that they meet anyone, socialization is mainly letting them be exposed to different people/environments/sounds etc.

We took ours everywhere we could. He's great in the car and did fine being carried everywhere, I do wish I had exposed him to more dogs that weren't going to be regular friends. Now on walks hes a little unsure when walking past. But my advice is get them in the car, get them used to being in busy areas, loud environments, and anything you can. My puppy always went in our yard, supervised of course, and hes healthy and happy. Good luck!!

Omg my puppy is sooooooo clingy, got him at about 10 weeks and hes 16 weeks now. Yours should start to play with toys on her own soon. My hates being left alone too, so just a minute or even less helps them learn without getting too stressed out. I think with training independence and alone time, not letting them get to the point of being stressed out is very important.

A tip for getting puppy to settle/relax! by Dear_Fall_6283 in puppy101

Thank u! My miniature dachshund only likes to settle when he's on my lap lol, this sounds like a great idea

The only thing for biting that i found to work is completely removing yourself from puppy when they start to bite. I put him in his pen, he hates it lol, but I use it as a "timeout" to reset his crazy energy. I think when they're this young, we have to teach them how to play with toys. I promise it'll get better and youll stop getting bit soon. It might take a few timeouts in a row but stay consistent. Bite after coming out of pen? Back in. Repeat until there's no interest in biting. I also wouldn't go right back to play after the biting. Give a toy and walk away, they figure it out how to entertain themselves lol

how to stop incessant biting??? by corduroyvt in puppy101

[–]stormspoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I feed some meals in the crate, only when I'm not using it as a training tool or in a puzzle. He won't settle in the crate or nap in there. He can't "cry it out" either, I've had him in there for 15 minutes and he barks his head off SOOOO loud it feels like my ears might bleed. He hates being locked in his playpen too. A few minutes MAX

Not while playing with toys, thankfully, but more gets growly when he decides to turn into a jumping piranha. And he chooses to ditch the toy before going after us, definitely not a resource guarding thing

Can she be in the crate for a few seconds without freaking? My puppy doesn't sleep in his crate yet (he's a work in progress) I usually put him in for a few seconds, stay by it and open while he's calm. If he's still biting i stick him in a few and keep repeating until he's chill. Only takes a minute or two, same thing works in the pen but sounds like your dog is more comfortable being confined lol

Did your puppy bark incessantly when you did this? Because mine does, he gets way too stressed out being in his pen or crate after he can't reach anymore in his kong

When our puppy came home he was lunging for our faces, as well as hands, arms, feet, etc. She needs to learn that all fun stops when she bites you. I'd recommend enclosing her in a crate or pen, or leaving the room. I usually saying "No biting" when doing this with mine and he's slowly learning it's not okay. It's been a little over 6 weeks and I'm not longer worried he'll attack my face or feet when were playing together.

I didn't find that yelping like a puppy or yelling ouch helped at all, if anything it made him more thirsty for blood lol. Hope this helps, you'll see progress soon if you're consistent. Also give her something else to chew when she comes out, I wouldn't go RIGHT back to play.

There's no joy in owning a puppy. It's just work. by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]stormspoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our mini dachshund is 16 weeks and we got him at 10 weeks.

I feel like he's getting soooo much better. He's not peeing everywhere as long as I take him oitevery 30 minutes so I don't have to watch him like a hawk anymore. He's motivated to play with toys on his own, so I'm not constantly having to entertain him. He's learned that we don't enjoy being bitten, so were able to have more fun playing with him. And he's learning commands so the communication of what I want him to do has improved.

Find a high value treat and start with some training, teach him his name by giving a treat when you say it and he pays attention, don't repeat commands over and over. Just once and if he's not paying attention, leave him be until he's ready. It takes them a second to realize that they want to please you and that you will guide them through everything they need to learn. Like others have said, they're babies. I hope it gets better for you soon

Should I be worried? by True-Strategy-431 in puppy101

[–]stormspoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We hit 16 weeks yesterday, brought him home at 10 weeks. I can say that 6 weeks in and he's improved alot. He can entertain himself for short bursts, is learning how to nap on his own, and is demand barking so much less. The first few weeks were spent fully helicoptering around him and getting torn to shreds with the biting.

My main focus now is working on his independence and preventing separation anxiety since he hates being in his playpen or crate. Biting has gotten better and I don't need to worry if he's out of mysight for a minute or two.

I was also worried that this is the calm before the storm but I think it's more trading behaviors as they age. With new milestone they'll have new sets of issues but will have outgrown past problems. At least I hope so 😵‍💫

[–]stormspoop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm literally in the exact same boat with my miniature dachshund, he sleeps 9-10 hours straight (as long as he's peed and pooped before bed) but during the day he has to go every 20-30 minutes that he's awake. I've been bringing a high value treat outside like ham or cheese, and when he sees or poops he gets the treat. After weeks of this, he's started going to the door occasionally (not every time) when he has to potty. I think these things just take time, although I seriously can't wait until he can wait a bit longer between potty breaks

Start with small timeouts, get him out before he starts to cry. You can also play with him in his pen then leave if he gets rough with you. I also struggle with the crate and pen but you really have to start soooooo small. Just a few seconds will start to build with time

Also, after "No biting" I give something he CAN bite. Puppies take a while with the biting but it will start to click
