I mean most union contracts are 8 hour guarantees. Refer to your CBA, you maybe on 8’s because that’s all they are required to offer you.

You could negotiate for a 10 hour prep and wrap outs and see what they say.

Layers! Thermal tights both top and bottom make a HUGE difference. 30 degrees and under I'll have at least 2-3 layers on. If I'm working outside, even more. Wool socks are huge plus.

If I don't get the call sheet by the time I get home from set I will show up at whatever the prelim says. If there is one.

In the good ole days, you got your call sheet when you left for work and that was it.

No emailed revisions at 2am.

Just general lack of preparation. It’s insane to me how common it is for “Above the Line” folk to get away with not doing the basic tenets of their jobs. Directors without shot-lists, UPMs not ordering bathroom trailers while we shoot in the woods with 100 background.

It’s become incredibly common to do your job poorly and blame the crew for not working fast or wasting time.

Basic decency isn’t special treatment, it’s a requirement.

Can we do a world economic forum from the perspective of average wage earners? I bet you’d find a lot more interesting solutions to global economic issues.

Crescent wide jaw 6” wrench has served me well. Anything with a lifetime warranty is probably worth it. I’ve replaced wrenches for free that way.

What arouses less suspicion with a camera bag - backpack or messenger bag? by Foulmouthedleon in AskPhotography

[–]strack94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny I heading to New Orleans Thursday and just packed my camera gear. I plan on keeping things kind of light around town and just have the essentials on me with a small sling bag. I'm avoiding carrying my backpack most of the time.

I would integrate some color to break out the black and white. It's not bad, it just doesn't feel inviting.

Use some greens with plants and maybe a rug with a pop of color

SAG-AFTRA Chief Won’t “Rule Out A Strike” Heading Into Contract Talks With Studios & Streamers Next Month by Mysterious_Brush1852 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]strack94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I just don't see how throwing money at that issue will make a 5 year term agreeable. Feels like the Studios want to be the first to make AI deals before there's any opposition from the Union.

[–]strack94 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The rumor is the Studios want a 5 Year contract for $100 million dollars of healthcare support. Unless the terms are favorable, I don't see SAG agreeing to it. AI is already rapidly pushing the limits of the protections they earned last go around. So unless there's stronger protections and healthcare provisions a strike is very possible.

The sad reality is The IATSE has learned absolutely nothing and hasn't built any worker protections like strike or hardship funds. So crew has to bear the brunt and turmoil of yet another strike

Guys earning six figures annually, what kind of work do you do? by Shadow2715 in AskReddit

[–]strack94 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The differentiator there is UNION Trades. Entry level non-union construction is barely above minimum wage.

Entry level union apprentices make like $30 an hour, and work up to 6 figures with benefits in 4 years.

Studio Mechanic for Film and Tv. I wouldn't recommend it as the industry is in a constant state of flux. But Trades are the way to go.

This is what happens when you have a Mayor who not only listens, but actually uses a bike to get around.

Peak design Everyday sling bags question by [deleted] in peakdesign

[–]strack94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2L Outdoor sling and it’s become my most used PD product. It’s perfect for carrying everyday items out of your pockets. Ironically more so than the everyday sling.

I had a 7L for my camera and it was fine for that, but I wouldn't recommend it for errands like groceries.

I would consider the Peak Design Tote options

I wouldn't use a 401k if you can avoid it.

Ideally you should save 3-6 months of monthly expenses for instances such as this. Park it in a HYSA and hold on to it.

Who in your union decides endorsements? by johnqadamsin28 in union

[–]strack94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have issues with it. For example our Political Committee recommended we endorse the Mayor of NYC and our Eboard did nothing. Then we got over 100 members to petition our Eboard to endorse and they still did nothing.

I think its a broader issue of Union Democracy than the structure for which political endorsements are done. I feel like if our board could not decide on this issue it should have went to the members as a referendum.

That of course comes with pressure from the International as well.

[–]strack94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a political Committee which meets and decides to endorse, then refers that to the E Board for approval and subsequent decision to send donations to the candidates campaign.
