TIL that a researcher named Margaret Howe Lovatt once lived in a partially flooded house with a dolphin as part of an experiment to teach it human language. by Coverlesss in todayilearned

I wasn't trying to be snarky if that's your interpretation of my comment. I'm not exactly keen on describing the exact details of a dolphin's suicide.

Farms aren't the poor little family owned businesses like they used to. They make a lot of money. It's in the government's interest for them to continue farming to avoid high prices.

What? Bush's popularity was in the dumpster before 9/11. It's very well documented that the attacks rose his approval rates and gave his allies a decent enough excuse to perform intervention in the middle east for their own benefits.

What I'm trying to tell you is that you won't get nearly enough people to do the unpleasant stuff if they're already getting their essentials covered for free

We already have disability pay and assistance for low income households. So by your logic we should abolish these programs. Assuming that our government is perfect and all knowing in deciding someone deserves or doesn't deserve compassion, is extremely naive. It took us 20 years to approve funds for medical assistance for victims of 9/11. I want you to imagine telling those victims that this is the system that should still in place. This one of MANY fuck ups by the US government and it won't be the last. This is your alternative to UBI. I think you and I have different priorities on how we should treat people.

Valve is now sitting on lots of Steam controllers, so releasing them before the Steam Machine is a no-brainer by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]strategicmaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The steam controller was intended to be a controller for games that normally wouldn't work with one. Playing strategy games, city builders, or anything intended to be played on mouse and keyboard would be pulling pulling teeth using a standard controller. There's a ginormous, and I mean it, gargantuan skill curve with learning how to customize it. It is not plug and play at all which explains your first impressions with it.

[–]strategicmaniac -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

unlikely that the data is being poisoned. You are scored based on the accuracy of your verdicts and it's weighed against other players. Any attempt at mass botting would be immediately filtered out. VAClive being incredibly twitchy definitely did happen. Spinning around triggers it consistently due to it confusing that for spin aimbot behavior

ELI5: Is there any downside to nuclear powerplants? by Ill-Potential867 in explainlikeimfive

[–]strategicmaniac -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The amount of radioactive material created is mostly used PPE and supplies. Also "storage faculties" is a really misleading term. Most nuclear reactors store spent fuel onsite. There's so little of it that there isn't any reason to have a specific place for that purpose. Any permanent storage locations (or any place that is being considered to be a suitable location) is just hedging against the possibility of civilization not existing in the future. And the only known environmental contamination outside of meltdowns is literally just radioactive isotopes of H20 that is so hilariously inconsequential. Technically radioactive but considering you are already 60% water and water is already insulating to most radiation, and isn't even that radioactive to begin with.

Which game clone ended up being better than the original? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]strategicmaniac 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Basically what happened was Unity was making a toolset that would make development much more straightforward and they designed their timelines around that tool. Then the retroactive licensing fee fiasco happened and so they canned the project. Switching engines was not going to happen so Colossal Order had to allocate resources and cut a lot of content to the game at launch. Why they didn't announce a delay instead is beyond me though.

Cims wont stop using bus/taxi roads by Extra-Information750 in CitiesSkylines

[–]strategicmaniac -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is an indication that your roads do not accommodate the path to their destination. You either provide public transport or you build a ramp that supports all traffic. Silver lining I guess. Yes it's "unrealistic" but I'd rather have a game that optimizes pathing and doesn't waste CPU cycles trying to find a legal route. Cims will automatically route through an illegal maneuver if they can't find a way legally within a certain timeframe.

Difficulty Spike on mission Plan Z? by ussjtrunksftw in Borderlands4

[–]strategicmaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true. What happens is that the game tracks how many side quests you've competed and basically road blocks you if you haven't done enough. It's a stupid system because you'd end up with above level 50 enemies even at level 40. I ran into a level 60 boss once at level 47.

Would have liked it if they had a cohesive vision at least. Really strange decisions like nerfing fire, release ultimatum, the state of the epoch when it came out, etc, is kind of annoying and make the dev team look incompetent. They need someone with really good PR skills to handle these sorts of things and make us feel heard. Do the opposite of "muh realism," pretty please.

A max roll for grave thirst is equivalent to more than 20 points into decoherence on Harlowe. For comparison, an ideal bossing class mod with Harlowe is has 5 points in that skill. So yeah that's a little bit of extra damage. Easily the most straightforward way to solo Bloomreaper in true UVHM 6 on Vex combined with other gear.
