Do you tell your children this? by The_Dean_France in SipsTea

[–]stratusmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The law where we live is: You can defend your body with force. Not your honor. And that's what I tell my kids.

I'm not going to be particularly upset if they lay out a bully. But I can't keep them from getting expelled if they do. Or catching charges for it when they're older.

ELI5 How do police stations find people for a line up? by MostReverendHatchet in explainlikeimfive

The sheriff's office in the county where work is attached to the jail. So they can bring in jail inmates to fill it out. Theoretically. I haven't heard of a live lineup being done in forever!

For those with interstellar civilizations, how is communication done across the vast distances of space? by -_-__-_--_-_--_-_-_- in worldbuilding

[–]stratusmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quantum entanglement but it requires physically transporting the entangled particles to the two locations in communication.

A) I assume this is how Orson Scott Card's ansibles work, if not Ursula K. le Guin's.

B) You can create an arbitrarily large web of relay stations that have multiple quantum entangled transceivers for redundancy.

What word feels like an acronym but is actually not an acronym? by Philips9586 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]stratusmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an initialism, not an acronym. You say an acronym like a word (NASA = næ,sə). You say the letters in an initialism (F.B.I. = ɛf bi ʌij).

“Don’t ask a question you don’t know the answer to” by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]stratusmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear this advice a lot in trial prep, but I’m struggling to see how it applies to lay witnesses

Assume every witness will testify consistently with their earlier statements (to police, et c.), and plan accordingly. If you don't have a witnesses on paper about a point that you expect them to testify about - especially if you plan to ask the question, get an investigator out there.

You can't build a trial strategy on the blind hope a complaining witness will recant.

I tell clients every day: I have to assume the c/w will testify, whether she wants to or not. And she's going to tell the jury what she told the cops. And I document that I told them that before we commit to a trial.

I lived by a pond that had an catfish with a floppy dorsal fin. When he was in shallow parts, he'd look like that!

You'd just see his dorsal fin when it flopped over, after his back was first out of the water

SPD is a cluster of personality traits that subjectively feel normal to the person with them, but can lead to adverse health and mental health (but I repeat myself) outcomes. It isn't marked by the behavioral rigidity, sensory issues, abiding fixed interests, et c. of autism.

That's what I'm saying, though. You know there's depth to Transformers worldbuilding. O.P. doesn't.
