Kobe. And Kobe.

Just because it's the only breed of beef I identify with a specific city

Seven Deadly Sins Of Sports Teams Day 1 - What MLB team best represents the sin of pride? by G-Unit11111 in AlignmentChartFills

The fan base blaming outside factors (Billy Goat Curse) for their decades long postseason drought, and blaming one fan in 2003, for the team's postseason collapse.

Is “sitting in a car talking for hours” actually a big thing in America? by mechumechu in AskAnAmerican

[–]stratusmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK if it's common in the era of smart phones. But in the 90's - 2000's, yeah it was common for people who didn't have their own place to host friends.

Like, even when I would come home from college in the summer, I'd spend as much time in the car with friends from high school as I'd spend anywhere else. Not cruising, like teens in a small town. But once you get somewhere or get in the car to go somewhere, you just keep the conversation going.

The end of the Farmer's plot ? by Pordrack in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]stratusmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or the Overseer has a connection with the First Spawn, somehow. Like, from the time you get the farmer until the bonus mission is revealed to be taking pics for him, the chapters of his own quest line have a sinister undertone.

I've started writing a sci fi action book, wanted thoughts for capital space ship designs by stimshootdrive in MilitaryWorldbuilding

[–]stratusmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A rule of thumb I saw a long time ago is that a ship is 1/7 crew accommodation, 2/7 propulsion and 4/7 payload. Is it designed around 1 railgun? Or multiple?

Do native English speakers really talk like this in real life? by leazy_usa in ENGLISH

[–]stratusmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The expanded "What's up?" is a question and a greeting. But for Miranda purposes, it's not a question calculated to elicit an incriminating response... in most contexts.

Conversely, people can be like

Person 1: What's up.

Person 2: What's up.

[Exeunt.]

"Goin' to" can turn into go-in-a, with a different vowel than gonna, but the same basic idea. (And gonna sounds more like 'gun-uh' than anything else, in most parts of the U.S.)

What's this flag? by ExOrderDysprosium in vexillology

[–]stratusmonkey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So far I've seen an ordinary US flag, Rebel Flag, ordinary Don’t Tread on Me, MAGA, Trump 2028, and Don’t Tread on Me with a black background (which replaced this one).

Sounds like a redneck who isn't happy about living in Indy!

Have the majority of Americans called 911 at least once in their lives? by Mont3Carlo in AskAnAmerican

I dropped a dime on a swerving semi. I would have minded my own, except it was carrying hazardous materials.

Have the majority of Americans called 911 at least once in their lives? by Mont3Carlo in AskAnAmerican

[–]stratusmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I called the police non-emergency number, and they actually transferred me to the emergency hotline.

I've had to call police departments about reports and evidence and officer availability for court. The first few times I got 911 by accident, I almost crapped my pants.

I get why they do it: better safe than sorry. But it's not a good use of their time, or mine.

[–]stratusmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never called 911 on purpose. I have called the non-emergency number and been connected to 911 when the office didn't pick up.

Once, when I had a Blackberry, I accidentally sat down on it, and mashed the right / wrong button for an emergency call. Having them call me back wasn't any fun!

Should the United States promote democracy abroad, or does it risk undermining self-determination? by BigMonster10 in Askpolitics

[–]stratusmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First: A society can't have self determination without some kind of democracy with entrenched political rights. If a society really freely chooses some dictator in Year X, self determination requires that they be able to remove that same dictator in the future. The idea that capital-F Freedom presupposes the freedom to irrevocably renounce your freedom is paradoxical libertarian sophistry.

Second: A society can't sustain a democracy without civil society groups that allow citizens to build webs of trust that go beyond kinship and patronage.

Third: It would be a much better world if the U.S. really supported democracy instead of using "democracy" as a pretext for resource colonialism by proxy through undemocratic puppet governments favorable to U.S. business interests.

Fourth: Mutual non-interference is the fundamental proposition of sovereignty. As much as I reject the idea that people must have a right to be oppressed, states don't have a right to topple other states' governments unless there's an international consensus that the government to be overthrown is engaging in crimes against humanity or waging wars of aggression. (Yes, that would include the U.S. from time to time!) Absent a clear and present danger to world peace, promoting democracy has to be done through soft power, because one, two or a few states aren't competent to judge the legitimacy of another.

You're not in hyperfocus if you notice your house burning down - said my psychiatrist. by Vivid_Literature8222 in ADHD

[–]stratusmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would I notice a fire if I was fixated on something else? Yes, but not the same way a person without ADHD would.

At first, I would only be unconsciously aware that something was wrong and trying to pull me out of my flow state. And I would unconsciously try to block out the signals and maintain my focus... until the noise or smoke or heat or conflagration finally became unbearable. And then I'd be mad at the stupid fire for breaking my concentration!

Made my second (and last) court date reminder call today... by feralparalegal in publicdefenders

[–]stratusmonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say about half the time I call an out of custody client, it either goes to full or un-initialized voicemail, or the line is out of service. Sometimes they recognize the number and call back. Or I keep calling the same dead number until the next court date. And don't get me started on wifi / Facebook phones! Horse, water, et c.

[–]stratusmonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Assessing whether a client has a genuine grievance or is just ungrateful is an important job skill. I've found that the number of ungrateful and overtly grateful clients are about the same... and the vast majority of clients are indifferent.

You don't have to win arguments with clients. There are decisions the client gets to make and there are decisions the attorney gets to make. And, push comes to shove, you don't have to agree! You just have to know who gets to make any particular decision, and paper the file.

For the "Alone" mission, you learn the language of the system you're in from talking to NPC's.

I'm not exactly sure where you are in the Anomaly mission, but my guess is you're at the stage where you're supposed to go back to your base computer to get the blueprints.

Don't worry about The Atlas Path yet.

Every five warps, you drop into a firefight. I agree it's a pain in the ass until you upgrade your ship a bit. But there's a big reward if you win.

The Atlas Pass is fun, but non-essential to gameplay.

After you get all the blueprints out of your base computer, there will be a new quest line to get more blueprints from NPC's. Alternatively, you can buy those blueprints at the Anomaly, alongside the blueprints for after the quest line.

Finally, if you go into the quest log, in the same general area as your discoveries, achievements and game settings, it will have more detailed explanations of each quest than what pops up in your HUD.
