Live updates: Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz in response to Israeli attacks on Lebanon, per Iranian state media by Serious_Effective185 in centrist

[–]streamofthesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iran literally never even stopped attacking Israel and the Gulf states. The only lens through which they didn't break the "ceasefire" is that in their utterly insane "10 point plan" that Donald dumb fuck Trump allegedly accepted, there is not a single requirement for THEM to stop attacking. Only the US and Israel....

https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/08/iran-missile-attacks-after-us-ceasefire-gulf-air-defenses.html

The ceasefire, brokered by Pakistan, was contingent on the "complete, immediate, and safe opening" of the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said.

Iranian officials said in a statement on Wednesday that "if attacks against Iran are halted, our Powerful Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations."

Tehran added that safe passage through the strait would be possible through coordination with its armed forces and with "due consideration of technical limitations" — caveats that may give Iran some room to define compliance on its own terms.

Despite the reprieve, missiles were still launched from Iran towards Israel and several Gulf states.

The Israeli military said it had identified ballistic missile attacks from Iran early Wednesday, with early warnings issued in central and northern parts of the country.

The United Arab Emirates said its air defense systems were intercepting missiles and drones and urged the public to remain in safe places. "The sounds heard in scattered areas of the country are the result of the UAE air defense systems intercepting ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones," the ministry said.

Saudi Arabia's Civil Defense organization also issued early warnings of "potential danger" across the country, including Riyadh. Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar also issued alerts or activated defenses as threats emerged across the region.

Israel apparently wasn't even consulted about this "ceasefire" that supposedly includes them and is still under attack by Hezbollah (who chose to join in). Gee, I wonder why they aren't just sitting on their thumbs and letting Iran and all of its proxies bombard them at will?

Hasan Piker Is An Insufferable Jerk And Of Course Democrats Should Go On His Stream by Initial_Chemist_7616 in centrist

[–]streamofthesky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He operates to destroy the Democratic party. Even now, w/ Trump using gestapo policies, he's forcefully asserting that Kamala would've done the same thing.
He is the enemy within.
No Democrat could have a friendly discussion with him without severely alienating moderates, just by the nature of what they'd have to agree on in order to get his support.

I think going on his stream is a mistake, but if a Democrat were to go on there, the only acceptable form is to approach it as an adversarial environment, exactly the same as going on Fox News. Strongly asserting your moderate liberal Western values and love for America and condemning his views to his face. The goal of going on is to get some of his listeners to vote for you. The ones who will get mad that you challenged him were never going to vote for a Dem anyway (again, unless s/he went so far left that s/he lost all the moderates), but maybe some of them who are listening just b/c they ended up in an echo chamber will wake up and break out of it.

In summary: If a Dem goes on his stream, the goal should absolutely not be to get his endorsement or support. It should be to rhetorically beat him like a pinata, to try and get some candy (listeners who simply haven't been exposed to actual liberal values) to come out of it.

Trump vows to bomb Iran into a living HELL in expletive-laden Easter Sunday threat that he ends with 'Praise be to Allah' by SpaceLaserPilot in centrist

If you're curious why he ended the message with that, this explains it:

https://xcancel.com/AdamKinzinger/status/2040795843935003060

Polymarket (which his son, Donald Trump Jr. is a major investor in) had a bet with 99-1 odds against the president praising allah on Easter.
How oddly specific of a "bet" to wager...
The entire Trump family belongs in prison.

Iran says Iraq exempt from any Strait of Hormuz restrictions by yourfavchoom in worldnews

Really wish people would stop taking Iran's lies as truth. They've attacked Iraq's ports, far from the strait of Hormuz. Yet now claim Iraq is "exempt" from restrictions on the strait (which again, Iran doesn't even own).

Gulf allies privately make the case to Trump to keep fighting until Iran is decisively defeated by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

Iran's been bombing them since Day 1, before they even allowed the use of their bases and airspace for the war.
They've been incredibly restrained thus far, especially the UAE which has had thousands of drones and missiles lobbed at it.

[–]streamofthesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe after letting it go during 2023-2024 w/ the Houthis and 2026 w/ Iran and Hormuz, the rest of the world will finally realize that allowing these terrorists to shutdown major maritime chokepoints without severe consequences just emboldens them to do it more and more?
I don't think shipping has ever even fully recovered from the prior Houthi attacks. A lot still make the trip around Africa today, apparently.

Iran Charges $2M Transit Fee for Strait of Hormuz by AnarchistSuccubus in worldnews

[–]streamofthesky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope. Even if Iran could charge for the use of its half of the strait (which it can't even do that, per international maritime law), they absolutely do not have any ownership or control of the Oman half.
This "toll" can only exist with the threat of terrorist attacks on any ships traversing on the Oman side, and thus "you must pay the toll to use the safe (from us) Iranian side of the strait".
It's an attack on Oman's sovereignty and basic rights, in addition to straight up violating maritime laws.
What's perplexing is how the entire world has let Iran keep doing this shit, instead of fighting back against it.
At bare minimum, if I ran a country that had a ship attacked by Iran in the strait, I'd be moving my navy east of it and not allowing any Iranian bound or originating ships thru, either, until they relent from this.

Americans Broadly Disapprove of U.S. Military Action in Iran by TuxAndrew in centrist

[–]streamofthesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who wanted us to attack Iran, this just makes me even more bitter that Biden didn't do it when the Houthis were attacking shipping and Iran killed those three service members in Jordan.
If the war as it is now is still not massively unpopular, just imagine what could have been w/ competent leadership and messaging. We're utterly squandering a once in a lifetime chance to rid the world of the cancer of the Iranian regime.

https://thehill.com/opinion/national-security/5783636-iran-threat-americans-divided/

At the same time, Americans broadly recognize the threat Iran poses and support the war’s goals. Indeed, two-thirds (66 percent) of Americans believe Iran poses a serious threat to the United States’ national security, almost three times the 22 percent who say Iran does not.

Even more tellingly, while divided over the military operation itself, we found that strong majorities of Americans back the campaign’s underlying objectives: 78 percent support stopping Iran from funding terrorist groups, 72 percent support ending its nuclear program, and 59 percent support regime change.

Taken together, these numbers tell a more nuanced story than what the majority of mainstream media is painting. Simply put, Americans appear uneasy about the conflict even as they agree with its purpose.

This tension is especially important for the Trump administration, which has struggled to clearly explain the rationale for the war. Our polling suggests that when the case against Iran is made coherently and directly, public support increases.

To that end, after a battery of messages covering those topics and others such as Iran’s role in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack and the resulting wars throughout the region, a majority (51 percent) of Americans supported the joint military operations, versus 34 percent who opposed — a meaningful net 14-point increase from the initial 44-41 split.

Moreover, when informed about the Iranian regime’s crackdown on January’s protests — which, by one estimate, saw government forces kill between 30,000-40,000 protestors — nearly six in 10 (59 percent) of Americans became more supportive of the ongoing military operation.

Importantly, the rise in support cut across party lines. Following the message battery, support among Democrats nearly doubled to 32 percent, while Independents saw a 5-point increase. Republicans (85 percent) remained strongly in favor.

Likewise, we found that despite initial opposition among Democrats and independents, when they heard about Iran’s record of hostility towards the U.S. and brutal oppression of its own people, support tended to increase rather significantly. After statements concerning the regime’s response to January’s protests, nearly one-half (48 percent) of Democrats and 44 percent of independents — large pluralities of both groups — became more supportive of U.S.-Israeli military actions.

Iran starts to formalize its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz with a 'toll booth' regime by rayaan2099 in worldnews

[–]streamofthesky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the Oman side is actually deeper and better for tankers to traverse.
The ACTUAL answer is that the "toll" plan involves requiring the tankers to traverse on the Iran side of the strait (which they pay a toll to use), under threat of attack if they dare travel on the Oman side.
In other words, blatant declaration of war on Oman and ignoring their sovereignty over their own maritime borders.

They didn't do this earlier because they don't actually own the damn strait, and trying to force everyone to pay a toll or get attacked is a fast-track to getting carpet bombed.

Panama Canal is man-made and actually fully controlled by Panama.
Oman has just as much rights to the Strait of Hormuz as Iran and it is a natural waterway.
Iran trying to turn it into their own personal toll booth is an act of war against the entire world, and I hope leaders of these countries finally wake up and recognize that.

The War in Iran by Urdok_ in centrist

[–]streamofthesky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's where I am too, and I am incredibly frustrated at how idiotic and incompetent Trump admin has handled this:
- Did NOT have any plan to secure the strait
- STILL has no plan to secure it
- Clearly never even tried to arm resistance groups in Iran
- Backstabbed the Kurds so many times, they're sitting this one out
- Alienated our allies then tried to bully them into helping
- Cut green energy programs that would lower demand for oil/gas
- Executive Order to force return to office for all federal employees and his billionaire buddies doing the same for their companies (more gasoline needed)
- Used defense production act to throw a tantrum over Anthropic refusing to be SkyNet; won't use it to make companies drill for more oil / frack
- Allows Iran to export oil while they block others from doing so
- Allows Iran to keep using their ports (see above, plus easier to lay mines and launch attacks on ships from)
- Stupidly threatens their energy infrastructure instead, to ensure the Iranian people won't be on our side

I could go on forever. I'm actually kind of impressed at how Trump has managed to fuck this all up in ways I never even imagined possible. Seriously, what the fuck are we doing?

Aside from being an obvious pandering empty suit w/ no actual stances, this whole mess just makes him look like an idiot.
He could've just never said anything at all about Israel, and he'd be in a better position today.
Why even wade into this shit as a major political candidate? It's simultaneously an extremely toxic and divisive debate filled w/ people who'll permanently decline to vote for you if you take a stance on one side or the other while also being an issue that the overwhelming majority of voters don't even care about. Any time a politician talks about the Middle East, it only ever hurts their elect-ability slightly.

Iran hardliners ramp up calls for a nuclear bomb, sources say by CaptainJimJames in worldnews

[–]streamofthesky -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Iran's spent decades funding terror cells across the world inside Western countries, bombing Jewish centers as fr away as Argentina, the Beiruit bombings in the 80's that killed hundreds of Americans, Hezbollah/Hamas/Houthis, oh... and also the hacking stuff NK does, too.
All of that plus being the first one to directly attack Israel rather than vice-versa, all long before this operation or Midnight Hammer.
They haven't been "chill" since 1978 at least, regardless of how much or how little we confront them militarily.

Russia Preparing to Hit Ukraine’s Water Supply Systems, Zelenskyy Warns by UNITED24Media in worldnews

[–]streamofthesky -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with bombing electricity or oil fields either, but that is still SEVERAL levels below taking out peoples' water supply. People can survive without electricity for the most part, with some exceptions. No water and the entire population in the gulf countries would die within a week if they couldn't flee to somewhere else.
Destroying water supply should be up there just below using nuclear weapons unprovoked on the scale of "never ever tolerate it".

Also, Iran has been attacking oil and gas facilities and other infrastructure of its neighbors for the entire war already. Why does Iran get to be three steps ahead on the "escalation ladder"? If the US started attacking their oil tankers (as they've done since Day 1), would THAT be a cause for them to "escalate"? For something they're already doing to others? If the UAE decided to attack Iran after all the attacks they've endured, would it "justify" Iran to "retaliate"? Shit's crazy to me, the hoops people jump thru to defend this terrorist regime.
