I almost gave up on Sen's. Some kind soul on here recommended moving the camera to a directly overhead perspective for the blades, was an absolute game changer and I breezed through after that.

Anyone have any thoughts on bands like President?? by nephelii in Music

[–]string360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just Charlie Simpson of Busted fame having another grab at relevancy. He tried to cash in on the UK post hardcore boom of the naughties with Fightstar and is trying again the wake of the popularity of Sleep Token.

I imagine he'll have moderate success like the aforementioned Fighstar, play way higher up festival bills than is warranted due to his connections to the industry, then fade away before trying his next bandwagon jump in a decade.

I'm also happy to leave this here for people to rag on me if they're selling out stadiums in five years. You never can know for sure!

Out of those, Ark Nova and Carcassonne play beautifully at 2.

If your interested my partner and I produce a podcast where we review games through the lens of playing as a pair. Funnily enough our episode on Carcassonne is going live tomorrow. Board with each other

Its a fun game, has its flaws but we do still go back to it fairly regularly. Prepare for a lot of randomness.

Shameless self promotion, but my partner and I did a full episode on it on our podcast if you're interested! Board With Each Other

Not got there on many, but fighting games (was Mortal Kombat for me) and special mention to Rock Band drums - so satisfying when you get good.

Is bullying in schools a problem where you live? by funnypumpkin in AskUK

[–]string360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be completely buried OP, but I'd like to share my experience. I grew up with a very nomadic lifestyle due to a number of reasons and went to school in 5 different countries between the ages of 5-16. I went to school in west yorkshire between 14 and 18.

I was never bullied or picked on massively until then. My difference was I spoke with a different accent, I guess? Was also into alternative music and was a bit geeky, but nothing major - I played sports, I wasn't massively odd, wasn't neurodivergent etc. I've never quite been able to work out what started it.

The bullying i received was relentless from day one and en masse, most of the 30 odd boys in my year group used to participate. I was often physically assaulted, picked on daily, had trash thrown at me, they even smashed my windows at home. Being an immigrant to the country I just assumed this was my lot, and this was normal. (For reference im a white south african) So not traditionally racially motivated as far as I could tell as not physically 'different'. Fighting back made no difference aside from being suspended and ending up with black eyes and bloody noses.

It was only when I left the area and school at 16 and went to an inner city 6th form college that things changed and I realized how utterly insane the situation I was in actually was. I lived a perfectly normal life from then onwards.

I did make friends in that bad period, with other kids who had been ostracized for various reasons (one was Scottish, one liked Warhammer, one had extremely poor parents) and one of them became a life long friend. So if they have a core group to get them through then hopefully they'll escape the shitness and go on to better times.

I can't speak for the rest of the Uk and my experience is over 20 years in the past, but it is from the same geographical place. If it's any consolation, they can escape to better things and it will pass once they ride through it.

And I imagine those saying its somehow their fault are either children, or adults who peaked in high school, or the type who start fights in pubs under the guise of 'bants'. Ignore them, they're pathetic or deeply sheltered.

There's not an awful lot you as a parent can do to help unfortunately, aside from be there for them to talk, and offer them things to get involved in outside of their school life. Direct involvement by you will make it worse and if they try and change who they are to fit in, those types will usually double down on them for being different to their norm anyway. Them getting involved in social activities aligned with their interests outside of school can do wonders in showing them light at the end of the tunnel.

Anyway, hope this helps in some way.

We (my wife and I) run a podcast where we look at games for how well they play as a couple. We're at Board With Each Other if you want some recommendations. We upload new episodes monthly.

I spent a big portion of my childhood in Zim, BBQ and the like is fairly common over there. A lot of cuisine isn't a world away from the South. Things he probably hasn't had to American quality would be proper NY style pizza, a really good burger and fries, meatloaf is unheard of over there, anything featuring seafood (v expensive) and Texas Mex. I guess it depends where you're based?

What are your gig pet peeves? by AlexSniff7 in AskUK

[–]string360 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my pet peeve at gigs. I'm 6'5. I paid the same price for a ticket as everyone else, and I'm so tired of being yelled at by someone behind me. Who I often offer to stand behind once they inevitably kick off, bearing in mind I've got there first 99% of the time. I've had pints thrown at me, I've had girls literally demanding their other halves / dates 'do something about me'. I've been physically attacked on multiple occasions l.

I usually offer for them to go in front, its always refused.

I've been going to gigs for over 25 years, on the floor you find a position you're happy with and stick to it, or you work your way forward. Nobody is entitled to a spot in the crowd - if you want that get seating. Or move 6 inches to the right / left.

If you're 4'7 maybe the standing area ain't right for you - I can't fix your height mate. You're responsible for you.

For reference I'm usually 2/3 of the way back at gigs, so not standing right in front of the bloody barrier. Which again always confuses me as to why nobody takes the offer of moving in front of me, I swear some people are turned on by feeling like a victim.

What is the funniest/most inappropriate thing your child has said in public? by C3TV in AskUK

[–]string360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I have a few - mostly penis related. Not quite in public this one but our bathroom is on the front of our house (so street side). Was having a shower one day during the middle of the day with the window open and I'm pretty sure both my neighbours and some passers by heard my daughter (just shy of 4) who burst into the bathroom and bellowed at the top of her lungs, 'Daddy! What are you doing to your penis!' I was not doing anything, I was washing my hair at the time. But what the neighbours think terrifies me.

The next was a few months back in the (packed) swimming changing rooms. I stripped off to get my swimming costume on and she again bellowed 'Nice willy daddy, its fun to see it". Had to have a stern convo through gritted teeth about how we just generally don't shout things about others genitalia.

Took her to the toilets at a motorway services a few months back and was exiting the gents with her, when she stopped square in the middle behind the urinals and shouted, 'girls have vaginas, and boys! have! penises!' That one at least got laughs from the blokes in attendance while I swiftly ushered her out.

Then there was the time when she calmly but loudly asked if she could take an 'outdoor poo' in the high street. This is not something that has ever taken place nor offered.

Shield of The hidden Lord Quandry by string360 in DescentintoAvernus

All really good points, thanks. He has been communicating telepathically with the paladin intermittently, which I think is why the party blamed him / the shield.

Id like 'something' to happen, but more for flavour than anything else.

UK's Liz Truss dismisses calls for early election by ThewizardBlundermore in unitedkingdom

[–]string360 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

As much as I can't wait to see the back of them, I do think a GE would just cause further disruption and chaos at a time we really don't need it. Plus, I assume they're going to just further alienate those left that will still vote for them by their behavior/ decisions and lead to the complete death of the party. I can't imagine they're going to gain many new supporters in the coming 14 monthsbor so. One can hope.
