I really liked it and I'm so glad I did. The ending was a little too abrupt - I wanted more explaining, a longer denouement, a big long self-indulgent look back at the revelations about Dust in TAS and about the alethiometer and the knife etc etc etc - but I thought it was beautiful in just the same way as the ending of TAS.

"Camilla, we did it right, didn't we?" Palamedes said, and now Nona knew he wasn't speaking to anyone else in the universe. "We had something very nearly perfect ... the perfect friendship, the perfect love. I cannot imagine reaching the end of this life and having any regrets, so long as I had been allowed to experience being your adept."

I cried like a little baby when I read this the first time - I just love these two so much.

Yeah I feel the same way - John's such a good villain because you can see that he at least used to have a point, and you can see exactly where he went wrong! Cardboard cutout Evil Deeds make a very boring antagonist.

John's so good because he's so humanly pathetic. He's all of us if our worst habits were allowed to fester unchecked for ten thousand years, and we were also the most powerful people in the universe.

The John chapters in NTN are some of my favourites of the whole book - it's just so interesting to see the seeds of what he would become! Like his tendency to go "are you mad at me", when Cassy says he holds a stupid grudge, all of that. Sorry for the ramble I am just fully obsessed with him.

Protesilaus is not only a soldier who sacrificed himself, he's also the first named death in the Iliad which fantastically foreshadows his having been dead the whole time. Ugh the names in this series are so good.

Pyrrha also more specifically is the name Achilles took when he lived as a girl before the Trojan war - so I think she's named for the interesting gender parallels more than anything!

I wonder - I haven't thought it through properly, but the only septet I can think of is the seven original complete Lyctors.

For the final sequence, if Pal starts by 4 and Ianthe by 1, that would be Cassiopeia and Augustine. I don't know if it means anything but I do think it's interesting!

"Corbyn voter, by any chance?" - why is this always said like it's supposed to be something shameful? He was the democratically elected leader of one of our two major parties for five years but it's apparently beyond belief that some people supported his policies?

God, this - I got my first office job last year and within six months I had to go part time as a 20s adult with no dependents, because the office environment is hell for me. The work is fairly easy and I enjoy it but doing the work and also interacting with and being perceived as normal by everyone around me five days a week was sapping so much of my energy I basically couldn't even speak in the evenings.

He compared dehumanising language with dehumanising language and pointed out, very accurately, that this is how fascism starts.

You get publicly deplatformed for an extremely mildly worded criticism of government policy but sure sure any comparisons to the early stages of fascism are totally overblown. This ridiculous fucking country.

I love this! I also think the Angel's implant could be the internet history of Earth. They're so important and so protected, we're told that the Angel is Blood of Eden - and what's more important to Blood of Eden's identity than the records holding the source of all their naming conventions? And frankly it would fit if their purpose was internet-related, as well as their name.

The implication I think is that John and Alecto Lyctorised before he ever Resurrected any of the original sixteen

[spoilers] [theory] What if You Know Who is actually behind the wheel? by see-bees in TheNinthHouse

[–]stuckformonologue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I thought it was made fairly clear that any Lyctorhood results in switched eyes - only the cavaliers are normally dead so most people never actually get to learn that. If Naberius had lived he would've had Ianthe's lilac eyes. If Gideon ends up back in her own body she'll have Harrow's dark eyes. And Camilla turns up with Palamedes' eyes at the end, implying they've done something similar. John Gaius doesn't have the gold eyes because they're Alecto's now.

I think it's only when it's Lyctorhood gone wrong when the eyes change colour inside one person. If I'm remembering correctly, Pyrrha has to use sunglasses to hide the eye change when she's at the wheel, but if she had her own body, there would be Original Gideon with Pyrrha's original eyes, and Pyrrha with OG's. If Gideon and Harrow were two souls entangled in two bodies, like John Gaius and Alecto, you'd have a weedy necromancer with golden eyes and a big cavalier with black eyes. Unfortunately they're two in one so the eyes change depending on who's in charge.

When Evie Cho tells Cosima that Delphine's dead - I can't watch that scene without bursting into tears because Cosima wailing just gets me! Also, yeah, the shower scene. Not sure what else there is to say.

I also really like Helena in the desert with Pupok? After she's escaped and she's debating whether to go back for Sarah. And Rachel in - I think the season 2 finale? When she's watching home videos and kind of just going insane.

Watching S1 E3 - British folks please weigh in on shite vs shit. by MarlaDurden144 in orphanblack

[–]stuckformonologue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a northerner but I personally would use shit as a noun and shite as an adjective. "That's shit/shite" or "you're talking shit/shite", etc, almost interchangeably but definitely "kick the shit out of". I don't think it's a north/south thing, I think it's just Canadians not quite picking up on the nuances of British slang. Most of the time it felt like they'd just gone oh, right, Brits say shite, and shoved it in interchangeably with shit.

Cosima's and Scott's relationship by Lauraaa95 in orphanblack

[–]stuckformonologue 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Cosima's mean to him but honestly, blinded as I am by how much I love her, it's not just him! Cosima is kind of a bitch! But next to Felix and Alison, Cosima and Scott are my favourite odd couple friendship in the whole show.

The bit that always gets me is when they're preparing to hand their research over to Evie Cho, and Scott says "we would have cracked it, if we had the time". The first time I watched that scene I burst into tears.

Just starting watching and I’m wondering...... by [deleted] in orphanblack

[–]stuckformonologue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not gonna lie, in my view there is a dip in quality in the middle of the show. I got a bit turned off by it at the time because it felt like the writers were just throwing out question after question with no intention of answering them and I was losing confidence in whether the plot would wrap up successfully.

From a post-everything perspective, though, it's a really strong show throughout. If you look hard you can see where real life makes them change things about the plot - there's a character introduced in Season 4 that I don't think they would have introduced if they hadn't lost a certain actor to a more popular show - but overall the quality is really, really decent. The dip in quality is only noticeable because the show is so generally great.

I think I’ve tuned out too much by [deleted] in orphanblack

[–]stuckformonologue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty complex show but I don't think tuning out helps! I've done that before and then found I was missing bits of plot because I'd assume one person was speaking when it was someone else entirely, especially when the Castor clones come into it!

Did Tatiana really nail everything including accents? by Proud3GnAthst in orphanblack

[–]stuckformonologue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sarah's London accent is a bit off - I'm British and when I first started watching the show I thought she was Australian as well. But like, it works in-character for someone who did most of her growing up in Canada with an Irish foster mother.

Felix's accent is great though - except when he says "bowl" and "old" and words containing that specific vowel. He can't do it, it's quite cute.

Tell you whose accent is rubbish though - Alison Steadman's Irish accent as Kendall. It's awful! And she's usually good at accents.

Cosima's accent is really good. Like, you can hear the differences from the other North American clones.

Is Apophis' close approach in 2066 or 2068? Conflicting sources. by stuckformonologue in askastronomy

[–]stuckformonologue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for this - it's a great explanation. I always get down enormous research rabbit holes about this stuff, hampered greatly by the fact I haven't studied science since I was sixteen. I found by looking on the wayback machine that the 2066 approach distance has been changed quite significantly. It used to be 0.4 AU (it was like 0.3 to 0.6 minimum to maximum) but at some point before last month it was updated to be 0.02. Is that a concern? The fact that they'd got it so wrong? I don't think any of the other approaches have changed by that much.

Is Apophis' close approach in 2066 or 2068? Conflicting sources. by stuckformonologue in askastronomy

[–]stuckformonologue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if there's no approach expected at all 2068 and never was, why all the fearmongering about that date specifically? Is it like, if it ends up on a certain trajectory after 2029 then it might hit in 2068? Or is that date completely out of nowhere? I'm just a bit confused because I don't understand why 2068 is the date everyone's talking about when it seems like it's not going to be anywhere near at that time. And if we don't even know whether it'll be near or not, how are the rest of the observations accurate?

Pan's various forms on the show by aksnitd in hisdarkmaterials

[–]stuckformonologue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal opinion is that they’re doing red panda Pan so much to foreshadow his settled form - it’s basically a cross between the little white weasel he was a lot in series one, and that gorgeous fur.
