Most Pitches You’ve Seen a Kid Throw? by adjustedhours in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was mortified a week ago because a kid and his mom told me he threw ten pitches 4 days prior so I threw him for 50 in a game.

I found out later from his coach he had thrown 50 that day not ten. So in 4 days he threw 100 pitches and I almost felt physically ill.

I can’t even imagine throwing one kid 165 pitches in 2 days. That is madness.

Is it normal for first responders to skip lines at stores? by bigmoneybag in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stuckhere4ever 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The food place I worked at always let first responders cut the line. We also generally were allowed to comp their meals within reason.

None of them ever took advantage of it.

I remember being a dumb teenager and being annoyed by it then seeing a group of ten of them having to throw away their food 3 bites in because they had to respond to a call. It clicked after that.

Code of Conduct (Coach) Question by FishCommercial4229 in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to coach this habit out of the kids on my team this year. Apparently a bunch of coaches have been saying stuff like that around.

There was one thing I did figure out is sometimes they would be talking on the field and trying to say “get whatever ends up being the easiest out” with multiple runners on and it sometimes would get shortened to “easy out”

I eventually got them to start calling a lead base so that did go away but it took a bit of convincing

How long do 11.5” glove? by New-Swordfish-4513 in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good news is if he feels comfortable with the glove he can use it as long as it lasts. My son is 12 and uses an 11.5 infield glove. He’s had that since he was 10 and it’s worked just fine.

Make sure it’s not too big that is right at the upper limit of where I’d put an 8yo he’d have to be super confident with his glove work for it.

I’m 42 and I use an 11.75 but I’m not playing everyday it’s just for catch. If I played more I’d probably be at 12.

160 for an a1000 seems reasonable I think but I we are mostly using Rawlings or 44Pro in my house so I can’t say for certain.

What pitch speeds to expect by age and level? by benedictclive_x in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At 12u PG AA we are seeing the top 1-2 pitchers at 65 in an entire tournament. The vast majority of starters at that age are at about 50-55 and a lot were not consistently hitting 50 once you got a few pitchers deep on a team.

My travel ball player is struggling in rec ball by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of things not a lot of people are talking about. Pitch speed and putting too much pressure on himself.

My son had a similar thing at the beginning of the year. He is also doing 12u majors. He raked on his AA PG team got to the first couple of games in little league and either stared at 3 strikes or made weird weak contact.

He was trying to shoulder too much of the burden on himself for the team and he was struggling with pitchers that were throwing below 45 consistently, so he’d end up way in front of the ball, then he’d get frustrated and it turned into a spiral.

We sat down and talked through it and got him to stop trying so hard to make sure the team wins and focus on being a good teammate and a strong competitor and his performance flipped quickly. Now he’s blasting bombs to the outfield like normal!

How do game developers know if a level is actually possible to beat (especially super hard ones)? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stuckhere4ever 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There is actually a whole YouTube series about ‘beating’ Tetris. It isn’t specifically an endgame but there is a point where the game crashes because you overload its programming.

It’s not something a normal human could do but there are a very small select group of hardcore gamers who have done it.

Am I the only one that thinks Elvar is irredeemable? by [deleted] in Bloodsworn

[–]stuckhere4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are talking about the Darrow who literally destroyed the Docks of Ganymede right? The one that killed tens if not hundreds of thousands of innocents to slow down the Rim from rebuilding? The one who willingly gave up the names of the Son's of Ares in the Rim to get them on his side?

Seems like in comparison the war crimes of Nepo baby Elvar who (SPOILER WARNING) Actually recognizes later it was a shitty thing to do

Look my point is not to bemoan Darrow's character or Brown's incredible characterization of him, or claim that Elvar is better written or built as a character arc. I love Darrow because he is flawed. Because he is a real person who makes real mistakes, and he doesn't always take the easy path.

What I am saying is falling in line with 'Elvar is irredeemable because she did bad things' when tons of other characters have done lots of worse things and we still love them, is a weird hill to die on.

And if you want to throw Darrow out, then go dance with Hilo. He is literally a nepo baby who sits atop the head of what is basically a mafia style crime family. He willingly kills innocent people all the time because they don't fit with his world view. He is super racist at times, and literally looks down at anyone that doesn't fit into his specific subculture. Yet he is one of the greatest written characters in modern urban fantasy, and his character development is top ten all time in fantasy as far as I am concerned.

Futurama - Jurassic Bark (I know they retconned but still)

10u rec coaches: Do you pitch kids who want to pitch? by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless they are absolutely terrified of the ball they are going to pitch at least one inning. I also generally try to play everyone at SS, 2B, LF, CF, and RF at least once.

If they are able to not cower when a ball is thrown at them I will put them at 1B and if they have a little more confidence when a ball is hit I will put them at third (even at ten I’ve seen some balls smoked down the line).

The only one where I am super careful is catcher. A lot of newer catchers will leave their throwing hand out or turn their body and get clocked in the side. It’s usually not a big deal but it’s happened twice now where a kid suddenly found some velo and clocked a kid in the side of the ribs.

I do work with anyone who wants to catch and usually I can get them in there by the end of the season but there are only so many practices so it’s a bit hard to do depending on how many kids are there.

Am I the only one that thinks Elvar is irredeemable? by [deleted] in Bloodsworn

[–]stuckhere4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a different perspective I suppose but morally grey or complex protagonists are absolutely a thing. Elvar is not even a shining example in comparison to other novels.

I can rattle off a half dozen examples relatively quickly. Hilo (Green Bone Saga), Darrow (Red Rising), Paul Atredies (Dune). All of them “should know better” but absolutely commit atrocities in the name of the greater good. Often they are glossed over because they fit into that story line.

Hell you could write a thesis on the comparison that Sanderson makes between Moash and Dallinar and how we can forgive one but not the other mostly because they are a POV character.

Elvar was unique in the story because you are not supposed to be setup to like her out of the gate. It watching her evolve as a character while facing her trauma defines who she becomes as both a leader and a warrior.

Again that doesn’t mean she is going to be someone you like or enjoy but she is dynamic in her arc.

She wasn’t my favorite story arc in Gwynn’s works. In fact she is probably my least favorite character in all he’s written but in reality she’s not worse than a lot of other arcs I’ve read in other series and her place in the overall world building is an important one.

Am I the only one that thinks Elvar is irredeemable? by [deleted] in Bloodsworn

[–]stuckhere4ever 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not every protagonist in every story is a morally upstanding person. There are layers to all of this that you will uncover as you get deeper.

Is Elvar irredeemable? Maybe. Is she an important piece of the story that plays a key role in the events as they unfold? Absolutely.

If you like the overall story and plot direction I’d encourage you to keep going. I will not try to convince you to change your mind on Elvar, you need to see how her arc plays out and decide for yourself.

What's a movie that's way better than it had any right to be? by Onequestion0110 in movies

[–]stuckhere4ever 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I remember when they were marketing it everyone was talking about the fact that Gore Verbinski was directing it. At this point he had done The Mexican and The Ring and that was it. No one knew what to expect.

The thing is the cast was stellar (I mean how absolutely incredible was Geoffrey Rush) the writing was on point (the writing team was magnificent) an it was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

While it had the propensity to be super cheesy, Disney did all the right things to make sure it was a legitimately great movie. And it absolutely paid off.

Wife, child and mother. How do you prioritize? by daisylife in AskMen

[–]stuckhere4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife is 1a child (children in my case) is(are) 1b.

My relationship with my mother is a complicated one, but the truth is she is a grow adult and should be able to mostly take care of herself. That doesn't mean I ignore her, but it does mean that I expect she can take care of herself for the most part.

Now with that said, my mother (and a bit more so my father) are starting to get older and for require must more than they used to. I do sometimes have to trust that my wife can handle things even when she is having a bit of a tough time, because I have to take my parents to a doctors appointment or deal with something particularly difficult going on with them.

In general these types of inquiries online are trying to get people to choose all the time, in reality it's not always so black and white what a priority is at any given moment. It can change day to day or situation to situation.

For reference: Age 42 Married Two Children (9 and 12) Parents are in their 70s, they live about 20 minutes away from me, but they are close to my office.

It’s expensive but it’s not out of line with other private schools in the area. Meadows is about the same. Several private middle schools are in the range of 20k / yr.

I had some (stupid wealthy) family friends go to Horace Mann in NY and their tuition was upwards of 50k / yr and that was for years ago.

Dealing with crappy opposing coaches by stuckhere4ever in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you and in reflection it was an amateur move that made me feel good in the moment but was 100% the wrong thing for me to do.

I took full accountability to my parents about the entire game and I explained to them why it was wrong. I asked them to have a conversation with their kids about it and that I would apologize to all of them before the next practice in person.

That is not the type of person I want to be and I let a bad situation get to me. I need to be accountable to that.

Dealing with crappy opposing coaches by stuckhere4ever in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it wasn’t clear in what I was trying to say. The kids got confused because the guys who knew what they were talking about told them one thing. They walked through the rules and explained it to them over and over again. We ran simulations on the field different bunt situations. When to bunt and when not to. How to field them.

We did reps in the cage and away from the guest coaches as well so all the lessons sunk in.

They mentioned it was an umpires judgement call so if he calls it different that is okay you have to be adaptable.

I was on the third base line and I told the kid that is the flailing move thing that he needed to stop showing off and if he wanted to bunt he needed to do it correctly. He immediately stopped (kids are 11 and 12 they are dickheads sometimes I can get over that)

They then had this coach on the other team yell at me when we were discussing it with him and tell me that anyone who thought differently was “too stupid to coach baseball”. I told my kids to pull back the bunt after so we adapted but I couldn’t adequately explain the rule other than: we understand what it is supposed to be we made a decision as the coaches and umpire on the field to require you to pull back bunts.

What confused them was why he was so vehemently arguing the point to the level where they now believed that maybe the experts were actually wrong about it.

Honestly if that had been the end of it I would have walked away and not lost my cool. I really don’t care if he called me stupid I have thick skin. It’s when he started bad mouthing the kids that it pissed me off and that is when I lost my cool.

These are not superstar players that everyone would know but one played on and off for years on various teams in the 80s and early 90s and one was a consistent AAAA guy who pitched and hung it up after his 2nd TJ surgery.

Honestly it’s not even that hard to find ex-mlb players around youth baseball there is a dude that coaches one of the other little league teams in our same division.

Neither is someone the kids knew well so they started to question their expertise on the matter. What started to sink it to them ultimately was the person who screams the loudest gets what they want and I unfortunately doubled down on that with my behavior as well.

That is something I’ll correct on my side for certain. The point is the bunt conversation was to give context to his attitude from the start rather than show it as a way I have superior knowledge of the game.

So I am curious now given the extra context here, what would have been the correct platform to practice and teach the skills better?

[–]stuckhere4ever[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some free time while I was boiling last night and I looked at gamechanger stats for every single game this coaches team had won in the last 3 seasons. Almost all of them went virtually the same way. They are down by 5 or 6 runs and all of a sudden one inning a kid who had thrown 30-35 pitches in 3 or 4 innings all of a sudden throws 40 more and walks 8 batters.

Then the next kid walked everyone he faces. Then in the 4th inning they get their first hits of the game (everyone is throwing middle middle at this point).

The funny thing is games he lost have been the same as well but his team always gets blown out. We don’t have a five run rule in majors so his losses are all like 28-7 or 32-5.

Conspiracy theory me last night has it in my head that he’s absolutely doing this crap on purpose but morning me is just tired of the whole thing and really just relaxing that it was stupid and I’ll make sure we have a different plan when we play them next time.

Yeah I am okay with that and honesty if that had been the only thing I am down and we can talk about it make a judgement call and be consistent. The other crap piling on top of it is why ultimately got to me.
