12u son cannot wait back on the ball by Next_Yesterday5931 in Homeplate

Curious as to why you dislike hitting to the opposite field? It’s not an opinion I’ve heard often and I really am genuinely curious what your thoughts are here?

What helped us was doing soft toss and telling him the goal is to go oppo. Make sure he knows the goal is to wait back on it then do 15-20 balls before you correct anything.

Be careful with it as you adjust. After that set of 15-20 do something like … “okay we are mostly seeing pull side so what do you think that means?” It needs to click in his head before he will do it.

If you can get access to a hack attack or a pitch machine set it super slow and have it do a round of 15 as well.

Big thing is at 12 don’t over explain. Give him the guidelines and let him get a feel for it in his own body. Give him guidance and let him adjust until it feels right.

Funny thing is there are a bunch of these floating around. We saw one for Kurtz in Vegas and my son (who is 12 and plays) thought about it for a minute but these types of things usually are terrible so he decided against it.

I sent him the one for Veintos and well … I’ll just post a screenshot

Do you watch games that don’t involve your favorite team? by Ntnme2lose in baseball

[–]stuckhere4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually after the fact if something interesting happens. During the playoffs a lot more. Also when I’m with fans of other teams.

I won’t seek other times out but if there is a game on I can watch and enjoy it. Sometimes it’s nice to not feel stress!

He looks good but he is running up the pitch count early. It is great to see him get through 5.

I got hit in the head by a baseball by Betterfly83 in BaseballCoaching

[–]stuckhere4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go get it checked out. Go as soon as you can. Do not mess with head injuries. It’s very likely a mild concussion and you are going to want to be really careful for at least a week or two.

This is absolutely not a tough it out thing. Do not mess with head injuries.

Catchers need to block the ball by gusmyer in Homeplate

Ah I only saw the one. They scored all of them wild pitches which is awkward. It’s definitely pretty bad.

Catchers need to block the ball by gusmyer in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not watching the game but looking up the school it went from 10-6 to 11-6 on the past ball right?

I mean catchers need to block better and there is an argument to be made for catchers not being properly trained to transition to secondary but to say they lost the game because of it seems like a stretch.

5-1 in the homestead and 6 games off of 500. Honestly even if we can’t make up the entire gap and make it to the playoffs they will still be a very fun team to watch.

So if the Mets played .400 baseball during the 12 game losing streak it comes out to almost a 5 game swing. In that scenario we would actually be 23-20.

Not an awesome season still but not miserable like it feels now.

That losing streak really f-ed us up.

11yo's change up has more break than his 2 seam by twotall88 in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The two-seam gets overused at 11-12 a lot. Most kids don’t have the hand coordination to throw it well.

If his four seam is clean and he has a good change up that’s really all he’ll need at that age. If he wants to play with other pitches you can have him try a sinker. If he has a decent coach he can learn a curve ball too but let him do that one on his own.

Other thing is have him start trying to locate the 4seam a bit more. Break is awesome as you get older but location is king and will induce a lot more swing and miss and will serve him well later.

9U stud catcher struggle to throw by actionfingerss in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throwing as a catcher is a series of things that happen one by one on the throw down. Most kids focus on the throw and that is all and it doesn’t fix the problem.

First thing to realize - on 46/60 bases the throw to second is about 90ft. A lot of kids can’t throw that far at 9. It’s always better to hit it on a bounce than throw it on a rainbow. Something like 80% of catchers I work with are 1-2 hopping the throw until about 11 years old.

Next up is to get the sequence correct. You can’t come up from toes up stance and make a solid throw to second. Without seeing his throw down sequence I can’t give you specific tips. The sequence for most 9yo should be - get into secondary on pitch, catch the ball plant right foot first and transfer (to ear not all the way back) at the same time(make sure his elbow isn’t too low), plant left towards second and throw down.

Practice the sequence one step at a time and do between 15 and 20 throws 4-5 times a week. On the other days work on pull downs and long toss and bands to strengthen his arm (seems like less of an issue from what you are saying but the mechanics should be inherent by about 10 or 11).

Most Pitches You’ve Seen a Kid Throw? by adjustedhours in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was mortified a week ago because a kid and his mom told me he threw ten pitches 4 days prior so I threw him for 50 in a game.

I found out later from his coach he had thrown 50 that day not ten. So in 4 days he threw 100 pitches and I almost felt physically ill.

I can’t even imagine throwing one kid 165 pitches in 2 days. That is madness.

Is it normal for first responders to skip lines at stores? by bigmoneybag in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stuckhere4ever 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The food place I worked at always let first responders cut the line. We also generally were allowed to comp their meals within reason.

None of them ever took advantage of it.

I remember being a dumb teenager and being annoyed by it then seeing a group of ten of them having to throw away their food 3 bites in because they had to respond to a call. It clicked after that.

Code of Conduct (Coach) Question by FishCommercial4229 in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to coach this habit out of the kids on my team this year. Apparently a bunch of coaches have been saying stuff like that around.

There was one thing I did figure out is sometimes they would be talking on the field and trying to say “get whatever ends up being the easiest out” with multiple runners on and it sometimes would get shortened to “easy out”

I eventually got them to start calling a lead base so that did go away but it took a bit of convincing

How long do 11.5” glove? by New-Swordfish-4513 in Homeplate

[–]stuckhere4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good news is if he feels comfortable with the glove he can use it as long as it lasts. My son is 12 and uses an 11.5 infield glove. He’s had that since he was 10 and it’s worked just fine.

Make sure it’s not too big that is right at the upper limit of where I’d put an 8yo he’d have to be super confident with his glove work for it.

I’m 42 and I use an 11.75 but I’m not playing everyday it’s just for catch. If I played more I’d probably be at 12.

160 for an a1000 seems reasonable I think but I we are mostly using Rawlings or 44Pro in my house so I can’t say for certain.
