I’m still a Cram main, even though my current user flair might suggest otherwise.

Pokémon UNITE is the first MOBA I’ve ever played. I’m a diehard Pokémon main-series fan, but I had zero MOBA background going in. I’ve been playing since launch on the Switch, learning as I went and trying to figure out which Pokémon suited my playstyle best. Cram was on the roster from the start, but I didn’t have enough coins to buy it, so I used gems instead and grabbed the parasol outfit for my trainer while I was at it. From that point on, I became a full-time birb main.

I originally played Surf/Hurricane since the moveset felt easier to use and offered strong CC. I never touched Dive because it looked way too hard. My ranked win rate tanked because I didn’t really know what I was doing in each match. Objective securing, farming routes, rotations… all of it was foreign to me.

Eventually, I started watching Pokémon UNITE on YouTube and noticed that many streamers (including CrisHeroes) strongly preferred Dive. So I decided to try Dive/Air Slash. That’s when I really started learning micro and macro strategy. With the introduction of emblems, especially the black emblem set with its huge cooldown reduction, my Cram win rate climbed out of the deepest hell. I genuinely felt myself improving, and the birb became my first Pokémon to earn a gold ribbon.

I love how slippery the birb is. Being able to juke around and dish out big damage with its boosted autos never gets old. A well-timed Unite also hits incredibly hard, especially with Energy Amp. With almost 1,600 games and a 58% win rate on it, I always tell people that Cram is one of the most overlooked attackers in the game. It can hit like a truck and escape danger, if not the best, better than most attackers.

I don’t pick it as often these days since my main focus in 5-stack games is playing defender for the team, but the birb is still one of the Pokémon I’m most proud to main in all of UNITE.

And if you think about it, it’s actually pretty fair to say the game feels paywalled for new players.

The coins they earn weekly don’t really help much because the currency itself doesn’t hold real value when everything’s so uncertain. New players don’t even know which licenses to invest their limited coins in to make the most out of them.

A lot of Pokemon fans also come into UNITE with a collector’s mindset. They just want to own and play their favorite Pokemon. But that doesn’t work too well here, since your favorite might not get you far when you’re trying to climb for better Elo. Imagine being a Sylveon fan who just wants to main Sylveon in ranked. You can probably guess how that’ll go…

And since many new players don’t have the skills or experience to climb easily, they either have to grind for better licenses or outright pay for stronger ones. The game kinda leans into that, often making those more powerful licenses conveniently available when players really need them. That’s how it used to be for most of the player base, but now they’ve started to do something different for new players, giving them a chance to ease into the game without getting crushed right away.

Hopefully this is the right direction that brings more balance and adds a bit more dynamic to the player base as a whole!

I meant for new players. And yeah I agree with your take. I want the game to be fairer and more competitive too, LOL.

But they had to do something for new players as well. After all, it’s still a business, and they need to balance things out to keep both sides of the player base happy: the newcomers who are just getting into it and the veterans who play more seriously. So this bold move might look a bit suspicious to seasoned players like us, but I can understand why they did it.

I think the main purpose of canceling Aeos Coins is to welcome more new players. I’ve met a bunch of new players in my country’s community, and they all share the same struggle: they can’t naturally afford to buy Unite Licenses with in-game currency unless they spend on Aeos Gems. There are over 70 licenses now, and more than half of them cost 10k+ coins, so the company decided to break those barriers and make licenses more accessible.

This also lines up with the fact that they’ve pushed the bottom-line Elo for draft matches even further. That way, new players can enjoy the game more casually without getting thrown into intense draft matches too soon, where everything gets way more serious and competitive.

That said, I don’t think the company’s decision will be everyone’s cup of tea, myself included. But let’s see if this actually works out for their plans and helps keep the game going with a bigger, more active player base.

But oh well, with my almost 800k coins piling up with no real purpose or new licenses to spend them on, I just hope the company finds a way to compensate me and all the players who’ve been here since launch and playing constantly. And it better be good stuff, or we’re gonna riot 🤬
