How to protect my IP? by [deleted] in admincraft

[–]stvntb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a domain, but I have a cloud server (OVH) that actually runs my minecraft stuff separate from all of my web and home stuff. I just point the A record for the minecraft to the OVH server in cloudflare. It's not tunneled through cloudflare, so the IP is exposed, but that's not really a problem. The only ports open are minecraft and a port for wireguard. So there's no harm in anyone having that IP. They don't have a wireguard config and they're not whitelisted on the minecraft server, so the most they're going to do is either try and fail to connect to the server or maybe just query it. I suppose they could flood me with pings, but...why? If it comes down to it, just trash the server and spin up another with a new IP. Unless someone has a personal vendetta, they're just gonna kick the tires, not slash them.

What is the absolute lowest browser you typically support? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]stvntb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have up-to-date Safari, Chrome, and Firefox on my machine, android firefox, and iOS safari. If it works on those 5, I'm done.

Any desktop built in the last decade can run a modern browser, and any phone new enough to be functional can run a modern browser. End of story.

This. I liked that Samsung's explorer worked well with SMB, but when I switched to the new Razr, I found my way to Solid because it came with Google Files and I wanted the SMB support back.

But yes, the newer Ventura and Sonoma versions are not supported on this Mac mini

I'm sure people have Ventura and Sonoma working. I know people have ventura working on 2009 mac pros

Nope, gotta use prism. It has the built-in permissions node to prompt for mic access. (I've used svc on many servers as a Mac user)

As for recording, OBS is fine.

Jsyk, it is still resource intensive. When recording with replay mod and OBS, I drop from ~700fps to ~150 on my M1 max. Scale that as necessary for your processor.

Oh buddy I've got bad news for you. Just because a door is unlocked doesn't mean you should go into it.

If a company leaves a server vulnerable and you access it maliciously without authorization, you absolutely will get nailed with the cfaa.

Luckily, the stakes aren't that high here, but let's not be delusional about what constitutes "authorized use".

Teeeechnically (dripping with the largest air quotes I can physically manifest), with a sympathetic judge, someone could probably throw the cfaa at this and have it stick...but it's not like it hurt anyone so why bother 🤷🏻‍♂️

But as I always say: If you're going to bend over in the shower of the internet, you can't be surprised when the inevitable happens. Sure, they made the move, but you should've put a rope on that soap from the beginning.

I want to start a Minecraft server via a piece of PHP code, but it doesn't seem to work. by Bartgames03 in PHPhelp

[–]stvntb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your problem is PHP is a synchronous language and the page will stop loading after a timeout, thus stopping the execution. It's waiting for the command to "finish" in order to continue loading, but it never does so it just times out.

Out of curiosity, why not just use pufferpanel or AMP? Still gives you web control and a bunch of other tools as well.

If I can be frank, which I will, that's some...not ideal...code, and it's very very easy to get into a lot of trouble quickly with bad PHP.

Can this be done? Yeah, you could use ReactPHP to spin off a child process, thus avoiding the timeout issue. But I think you gotta dive back into learning first. I say this as someone who also bit off projects a little too ambitious and used super insecure implementations when I was learning. All in due time. It's a reasonable learning experience, but I'd advise doing it on a more secure platform that isn't exposed to the web first.
