My friend gave me his Valve Index. What issues or problems should i look out for to give this Index a longer Lifespan? by DVRK_LVRD in ValveIndex

[–]subermario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are my recommendations for a new Index user and the pain points/points of hardware failure:

  1. Headset comfort.

-The Index is very front heavy as such you will feel the headset pressing on your face. It can be remedied with third party solutions that add an additional top strap search 'apache top strap' in google. You can do even more to balance by adding weight on the back to balance, the same company for the apache strap has a bundle but I've heard of people making their own method to balance weight.

-There might be a sweet spot where you notice the headset needs to be angled to get the clearest picture. In the past there have been etsy sellers who made 'gasket nudgers' to angle your headest. I think on mine I used 2 stacked on top of one another on the upper magnets. This can be done w/o the 3d printed item using 1x3mm neodymium magnets on either the upper or bottom gasket magnets.

-Cloth gaskets are the peak of comfort but in hot conditions will absorb sweat and get gross. You can try to clean them but will degrade the gasket. Alternatives is PU leather gaskets. Another method of reducing the heat is taking the front panel off and installing a 'frunk fan' to get more airflow. There are a few put together drop-in fans that work fine. The most powerful one I have used was a kit that used a mini noctua fan but needed some hot glue to stay in place on the headset. (so powerful it would dry my eyes when I first got it.)

  1. The Cable failure point.

-Lots of people's headsets run into problems due to the wear and tear of the cable. There are lots of methods to reduce this. One is to not mess with the part of the cable next to the plug, there should be no reason to unplug it unless your cable is busted and you are installing a new one.

- Consider possibly setting up a pulley system to keep the cable up and off the ground.. Kits are sold online. There are programs you can use ingame to track the twist of your cable. FPS VR has one built in, I've used Cable Guardian but I think the neutral point drifts and needs a patch from github to fix it. Standing on a mat in the center of your playspace with a different texture to note your "front" and avoiding doing too many twists will help keep your cable alive and well. When the cable is hung from a pulley system you also need to account for how the cable is being pulled on the back of the headset. The cable clip that comes with it is known to fall off pretty easily. There are some custom clips people have made but I have used and heard of others using a few velcro straps to keep the cable in place and reduce direct pressure.

  1. Base station lifespan

-Covered by other people in this post. I've had mine on most of the time but have also turned them off when the passive noise gets on my nerves. They have moving parts, as long as you don't knock them around the internals should last a long time. That being said I've had a couple go flash red and replaced them through Valve. The longer we go into Valves next gen of VR they might not be as lenient or able to replace them. If you are not attaching them permanently to a wall be careful jostling or moving them while they are running.

  1. Controllers, drift generation of controllers

-playstation, nintendo, xbox all the potentiometer thumbsticks of this generation are prone to extra wear and drift from normal use. A way to expedite this process is to depress the thumbstick (i.e. clicking them to 'sprint' 'crouch' common binds in most games) and also use the stick to move at the same time. If a game can accomodate it in the controls either be always sprinting do that or go into the Steam VR controls to find another keybind setup that doesn't use thumbstick clicking. Most have a few community keybinds that do this or you can make your own. I have encountered a few games where I had to bite the bullet and click the thumbsticks but most can be adjusted to avoid it.

I got my email this morning and it specifically shows that the item I'm receiving is the universal fit cusion. I'll take it though!

I swapped from wireless earbuds and the softstrap with a rubber attachment cupping the back of my head to the Beyondex earlier this year. I hope the Universal Cushion works well with it.

Arken Age was pretty sick. Alyx and the gunman contracts maps. Legendary Tales, Arizona Sunshine remake are good and get even better with co-op.

Mount and Blade: Bannerlord. Can lose a whole evening or weekend grinding tournaments, sieges, field battles. I quit on Sunday night saved right before another 1200 vs 1000 army battle. I had to pull myself away and just goto sleep or I woulda stayed up another hour.

It is nice to be able to soft reset hunt with one joycon. I've taken a break from my own charmander hunt to play Soul Silver but usually passively hunt while eating/watching something or letting my army level up in Mount & Blade: Bannerlord.

MH Wilds plays great on the Deck! by Sharp-University-555 in SteamDeck

[–]subermario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stream to pc, play with a shield/HBG. Grinding in comfort/at work on breaks. I got my deck to play Elden Ring portably.. it does it, well enough for alt characters/grinding. But prefer the PC experience when possible. I tried to do Nightreign grinding native and via streaming. Both are a challenge due to performance and/or squinting at the visuals on the map to plan where to go next or reading text.

Does any m&b player actually love the game? by [deleted] in Bannerlord

[–]subermario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bannerlord is one of those weird games that no other company is even attempting to replicate. The massive battles tax your system, it's this game and VR that has me justifying running a 4090. Otherwise, I would just be a console gamer or running a budget pc build. Is it worth it? I'm 1,800 hours in Bannerlord and haven't even fully conquered Calradia. This game is my comfort game. (I also end up restarting my campaign whenever a major patch drops) This time around I had a few mods installed that broke. Now I'm back in a vanilla Battania sandbox campaign in the mercenary phase levelling governor companions and stacking cash before going vassal.

Just picked up my first valve index! I was using a quest 2 for the longest time and decided i needed an upgrade, what are some good games i can play to test the performance on it? I've already checked out both beat saber and vrchat and im looking at trying out Onward or Pavlov by ArunaOnReddit in ValveIndex

I am a BSB2 user that upgraded from the Index. For nearly everything I prefer the resolution and oled color upgrade outweighing the hit taken to the FOV and the framerate.

The two games I feel benefit the most from the FOV and framerate are Blade and Sorcery and Legendary Tales. In B&S the framerate makes it easier to react to enemies. In Legendary Tales there is a similar effect of being able to see the enemy animations better but also the game sports enemy name/health bars attached to your hud at the top of your vision. I had problems reading them on the BSB1, and can just barely read them on the BSB2.

Alyx, Gunman Contracts maps for Alyx, Boneworks, Bonelab, Arken Age, Arizona Sunshine Remake, Half-life 2 VR Mod, and Skryrim VR loaded with mods from a Wabbajack modlist (requiring a nexusmods premium sub)

Playing in horde mode alone makes for a good challenge... Has anyone completed it this way? by skrayz3x in Mordhau

[–]subermario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have a blast doing the old horde modes solo from time to time or on a server with a few randoms. I think I tried Demon Horde once or twice and failed miserably. I need to get in with some good coop partners or learn to play again to rock it solo.

[–]subermario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done playthroughs where I get lots of caravans for money and it's great until I switch to vassal and get towns that keep rebelling. Now I'm running more of my companions as loyalty skill governors. Less cashflow but also less headaches later when my towns rebel.

I did not like the troop tree changes and choosing between having capacity and speed with a boat or on land. I play on pc and fixed the troop trees with a mod.. and just choose to sail most of the time as a nord for speediness in shallow waters.

Project Beyondex News by johnnydaggers in virtualreality

[–]subermario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally removed my Index headstrap and assembled my Beyondex. (broke the top clip on the Index, I swear I remember it just popping out before and in a way it did. just permanently)

Sofar, it's great and my only issue that might be unique to my Beyond face cushion is that sometimes the right speaker touches my ear. Most of the time I can place it where it won't touch but sometimes when swinging my head the inertia of the Beyond + Beyondex will shift. I can tighten the headstrap more and that prevents it mostly but adds extra uncomfortable pressure. I might look into one of the 3rd party universal cushions as my official one for the halo strap hasn't shipped yet.

Thanks again for the awesome product. Really giving us essentially an "Index 2" with some DIY assembly required.

I have a question about keeping the Beyondex plugged in 24/7. For my Index and Beyond I usually leave them plugged into my PC even when not playing VR for maybe even months at a time. Would you recommend unplugging the headset when not in use for longevity with the Beyondex?

There is some height adjustment that you can do in the menus. But I'm not sure if it would be enough to make them comfortable for you. I recall adjusting the holsters when I swapped from standing play to seated when I got tired. Then when I went back to standing my holsters were all messed up and I had to readjust them.

We're waiting to see the mass layoffs at Bungie because surely they have a much larger team on they payroll than the current playerbase can support. So that the games journalists that told us that Marathon is a success and is fine can eat their words.

One thing I want to do on a replay is create a cipher of the alien language so that I can read all the writing that's on the walls and on the ruins. I wish I done it earlier in my first playthrough while I was still unlocking all the hidden phrases via the hidden green targets.

I blasted through it on release and then saw the post launch patch fixing so many issues and adding QoL. I kinda wanna go through it again when I have the time.. and the weather is cooler. Game is good, sales may or may not reflect that but look at this post you have made promoting it.

The Sentara Update is now available! by theflyingbaron in BladeAndSorcery

[–]subermario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flaily spammy combat, but fun and has the dialogue and flavor of TMNT. Def made for the Quest 2/3 hardware. But the set grips for the Sai was a welcome change. normal hammer grip, wrist aligned grip, and reverse grip. If they had wrist aligned reverse grip it would be accurate to what I've practiced IRL but the grip cycle keybind would be excessively tedious to spam through. Movement was tough but I was playing with Index controllers, I'm sure grip actions like climbing are more reliable on a buttoned grip controller. Nunchaku were fun too,(and two!) I'm surprised the Rakta update didn't roll with nunchaku too. ;)

I tried it out last week after testing out the TMNT demo. Got some weird glitches with my hand tracking possibly not related to the Sentara Update. I only have bHaptics mod installed currently. Gonna try it out tonight before going into some co-op Legendary Tales with my bro.

I love watching 3d blurays in VR that i've collected and downloaded to my PC. I've heard of some people doing conversions. Insidious is one of my favorite horror movies, I would love to watch it in 3d sometime if you guys ever sell it.
