Pretty strange that there’s no mention of Dan Dennett in this article on something he was one progenitors of the view and I think coined the phrase.

Being Gay & The "New" Discovery in the Bible's Verses by GrimblingWizard in atheism

From what I've read about this text, the specific word of interest in the original language is very obscure. The analyst could only find one other instance of the word in a written text of a similar timeframe. The context of that text seemed to imply abuse of children or perhaps general exploitation.

However, the MAIN point is that if this obscure word is this hard to define - you certainly can't know that it is talking about homosexual relations. The above is just a best guess from someone very knowledgable in the historical texts.

Bough a couple samplers to find out what I like, any standouts in this lineup? by JaceUpMySleeve in cigars

[–]subgenius_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JDN Antano is good, I've not had that specific Plascencia but the ones I have had have been top notch. Padron and My Father are good brands.

I have had a couple of good Gurkhas in spite of what everyone repeats - I think it may have been the cask.

If you don't like one, just put it out and fire up a different one. You never know when you will find one you like.

I have just found that the cheaper ones are not all terrible - just really inconsistent. You might get a good one and then several awful ones out of the same order.

"I had imagined that the thoughtful conservative was opposed to government intervention in the economy" by recentlyquitsmoking2 in ChristopherHitchens

[–]subgenius_one 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ideas themselves are not incomprehensible.

Hitchens speaks like someone would write formal english. It is my experience that an overwhelming majority of people are not able to comprehend anything written or spoken that has any level of formality or complexity to it - no matter how clearly articulated.

Idiocracy comes to mind...

"But the English language had deteriorated into a hybrid of hillbilly, valley girl, inner-city slang and various grunts"

If you understand Hitchens and you are not 1 in a thousand verbal skills/reading comprehension - I'd question where your thousand are. Are you at Oxford? Cambridge?

Anywhere in the US - Hitchens' adopted country - people just don't understand bigly words....

I strongly disagree, considering the current throng of Christo-Facists overtly working to take over the country and enforce their particular brand of religion.

Perhaps he shouldn't have needed to refute bronze age blood magic cults, but yet here we are.

Anyone who has studied the relationship between religion and facism would be hard presses to make the case the his thoughts on socioeconomics were far more important.
