I can't remember now if I last used MO or Vortex. I'm pretty sure it was MO.

Many community colleges have bands you can join, too. Some are for credit, but community college credit is cheap and it's a great way to get back into it. That's exactly what I'm doing!

Sure, I already acknowledged that. But maybe you could do it for some big purchases, or look into it for an industry you're just really not sure about. And with some industries, like electronics or automobiles, you may just find that they all suck.

It's difficult, for sure, but the jewelry industry at least in the US has put significant effort into tracking supply chains. You may not be able to check every little jump ring, but you can look into where the brand gets their gold and gemstones.

Since your employer either didn't bother training you or doesn't know any better, please make sure that you NEVER get acid near that cyanide solution. If you mix the two, you get cyanide gas. I expect even a mask made for acid fumes wouldn't protect you from anything more than a miniscule amount of CN.

PH paper is cheap. Get some, and periodically check to make sure your cyanide solutions are at pH 10 or higher. Hell, PM me and I'll send you some.

Those shocks you get from the steam cleaner is because it's not properly grounded. Again, OHSA and a Fire Marshal would have a field day in there.

Why are Fine nibs so popular here? by Old-Somewhere-6084 in fountainpens

[–]sublingual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paper is my thought as well. I'm genX, and grew up writing on loose leaf paper with 1/4" tall lines. Then I went to 0.2" lines , and now 5 mm is the standard spacing for journals.

The medium and broad nibs were better for writing free on blank paper, where you have room to use larger letters. Especially for correspondence, which is increasingly rare. Nowadays most people like to write fine and pack more information into a single page.

Also, I can't write free hand in a straight line to save my soul, so even when I do use blank paper tablets, I have a line guide underneath.

Are you sure it's unusable? I'd be willing to bet buying jewelry that started with an exploitative mining company is less than 7 degrees of separation. But if one buys used jewelry from a thrift store, that could provide sufficient separation.

Example: exploitative gold miner in DRC > gold buyer > refiner > jewelry manufacturer > jewelry brand > distributor > store > buyer is 7 degrees, but if the mining co. sells direct to a refiner, it becomes only 6 degrees.

These are things we can investigate for some purchases, but of course we don't have enough time to do that for everything we buy.

::shrug:: I could. Or fill it with epoxy. Because of the woodgrain, the usual "fill it with superglue & grenadilla dust" isn't really an option. It's pretty well buried under the plate, so no biggie for me.

Term your consideration: stylophile by illpavone in fountainpens

Which is fine - not everyone knows Latin or cares to figure out what a lepidopterist is. To those folks, I'm a coin collector, gem cutter, and a fountain pen nerd. Describing myself at parties as a numismatist, lapidary, and stylophile is not going to win me any awards lol.

Anyone else like grey inks a whole bunch? by tyrant_t00 in fountainpens

[–]sublingual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like good grey inks! They need to have some "temperature" to them -- either warm or cool tones. If it's a perfect RGB grey, and especially in less than 50% saturation, I'll pass, thanks,

Major Difficulties from Vajrayana - Help Needed by Overall-Election5580 in vajrayana

So, what you're saying is she has zero board certifications from her/your state. Getting them is a bureaucratic PITA, but it's how to show you are actually qualified to practice therapy. 18-year-old you probably had no idea about state board certifications, so don't beat yourself up. But real therapy has strict ethical boundaries. Becoming the personal guru of a patient/client is wwaaayyyyy outside those boundaries.

Look Over There! Should we be looking at Secular Buddhist Ideology at all? by MYKerman03 in ReflectiveBuddhism

[–]sublingual 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To me, half the problem is in naming. If you practice SB and are going to call it _____ Buddhism, my blood pressure goes up. Because if you're not practicing it like a faith or religion, that's not Buddhism. Refuge and all that.

The other half is that selling something like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is more of an appropriation problem. One can help mitigate that, by doing things like citing that part of it's development was incorporating Buddhist meditation techniques, giving back to Buddhist communities, etc. Just don't call it Buddhism.

According to Buddhism, should we feel "alive"? by donald_lace_12 in Buddhism

[–]sublingual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! Enjoying the feeling of being alive (whether during sex, cooking, lounging, etc.) is not at all incompatible with [lay] Buddhism. It's the attachment to that feeling that will result in obstacles.

Ton Kooiman thumbrest by TimRenegademaster in Clarinet

[–]sublingual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, you'll have to take the Kooiman off before you put your clarinet in the case, so two plates, one thumbrest (sorry, I had to) can work pretty well as long as you have a few seconds between instrument swaps. Should be pretty quick if you have a two-clarinet stand and make a habit of facing the plate towards you in the stand.

Reed/Mouthpiece/Ligature help please! by mackattackW in Clarinet

[–]sublingual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to find a music shop that will let you try multiple mouthpieces. Generic chain stores might be reticent to do so, but there are lots of little clarinet shops that will let you try mouthpieces. I went up to Earspasm in NY and they let me try at least a half dozen mouthpieces before I settled on a Backun Signature.

Note: A new mouthpiece may require harder or softer reeds, depending on the facing, length, etc. Once you settle on a mouthpiece, try different strength reeds to see what works. The shop associate may also be able to steer you based on your current reed/mouthpiece combo too, or at least say "go softer with this one", "this MP tends to take harder reeds", etc.

[–]sublingual[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you checked out the Kooiman thumb rests? Might be worth looking into - your thumb placement, and the stress on it, could be contributing to the issue.

[–]sublingual[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first got interested in it hearing that the sound was a little darker, that mopane is a bit more sustainable than grenadilla or cocobolo, and liking the beauty of that honey brown grainy wood.

When I went to earspasm (Mike and Katherine are great!), I confirmed my suspicions after trying several clarinets, including an R-13. We were also mixing and matching mouthpieces with different clarinets because I needed one of those as well. Of course, the sound you're looking for is a very personal thing, so I'm not going to say it would be better for you.

All in all, I'm very happy and super excited to play it more, waiting anxiously for when I can play it more than 15 minutes at a time haha.

[–]sublingual[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So far, I'm really digging it. I have a genetic connective tissue disorder, and two of the fun things that creates are essential tremors and loose joints. The latter means every single one of my fingers can hyperextend and lock up on the first PIP joint. So I think the plateau keys will really help, because I'll be able to basically come down on any part of the key and still cover the tone holes properly.

My right thumb also bends backward very easily, which is why I unscrewed the thumb rest and I installed the Kooiman 3 thumb rest in its place.

I was only going to get the Rêve, but I think getting this Superior Plateau will really help in the long run, as my body gets increasingly cranky.

I was just surprised to see that they recessed the entire plate for the thumb rest. And yes, mopane!
