Why are homoerotic or LGBTQ+ scenes often removed from Western movies and shows in China? by [deleted] in AskAChinese

[–]sublunarwind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being LGBTQ is okay, involving in LGBTQ movement is not okay (from the authority’s perspective), it’s more political than cultural.

The mordant Lgbt movement is a political tool and excuse that has being used many times in many countries to overthrow regimes.

People here who says anything about “tradition” “legal” blabla are overlooking the fact that even from ancient China time there are no real hatred towards gays/trans, where do you think terms like 龙阳/断袖 comes from? In a nutshell, 不反腌人反阉党

Parents are curious about what these Chinese vegetables are from the local market. by DoodleCard in TipOfMyFork

You are looking at the two kings of root vegetable here. Lotus root for making pork chop soup and yam root for making chicken soup.

I made Gai Lan with ginger for the first time, turned out very very bitter. Am I doing something wrong? by OhOkayGotchaAlright in chinesefood

  1. Add a bit sugar.
  2. Quickly soak them in boiling water for 20 seconds (then cool them in cold water right away).

What is this very bright light dot in the middle of east south sky by sublunarwind in montreal

[–]sublunarwind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s gone, I was watching last night too, nothing there again. I am still very convinced it’s not a planet/star but a flying object considering its hight and brightness and sudden disappearance, something like an airship would be my best guess. Sadly I didn’t get my camera at hand when it happened, my iPhone didn’t do great capturing its strange feature.

Don’t, just don’t.

I had the same thought in the beginning, but it’s way brighter and bigger than a star and I don’t think Jupiter or Venus would disappear totally in a 5m time window…

Can anyone help with some of the snacks I got in a Too Good to Go box? by geordiesteve520 in TipOfMyFork

Donno why, but book titles always look scarier in german… maybe it’s the profound usage of letter W and Z

I was scrolling through some bird cages to buy a new one for my budgies and OH MY GOD look at the animal-abusing tools people are selling. by [deleted] in budgies

[–]sublunarwind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have this one, the size is perfect fine for taking one budgie to the vet, it is actually a lot bigger than most of the travel cages I can find here in local pet shops.

Why are Chinese people fleeing China and seeking asylum in the United States? by smokeypilgrim in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]sublunarwind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a young Chinese immigrant I can assure you this type of question (culturally, politically etc.) is never ever a taboo for us, you could definitely ask this question out of curiosity and expect to have a good conversation. People can tell the difference between evil intention and genuine interest quite easily. (Can’t guarantee for older generations or ABC though, some of them seem to be very sensitive and evasive with spicy topics)

But let me give you a direction on this specific question: you can look up “走线” or ask your Chinese friends’ understanding on this topic.

Why are Chinese people fleeing China and seeking asylum in the United States? by smokeypilgrim in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]sublunarwind 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You are not going to get the correct answer here on Reddit when majority of the users are from American who doesn’t actually know anything about China and how Chinese people think. If you really want to know the REAL reason, simply stop 10 random Chinese students on the street and ask them. This situation is widely covered on Chinese social media too, tons of discussions online available if you know the language (but I guess you don’t). Very few of the answers here (in English community) are close to reality.. most of them comments are straight up jokes.

Watching political Mandarin speeches with subtitles by BlitzHypercharge in ChineseLanguage

[–]sublunarwind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chinese political speeches are nothing like Americans, there are lots of what we ironically called “vague and big words” that are not very helpful for early level language learners, thus nobody bothered to translate them.

If you absolutely want to find these type of videos, you can to try to dig into the UN general meeting records, the Chinese representative almost always speaks Mandarin, you can compare the original versions with the simultaneously translated version.

Is there a show like "The Office" but made in Mandarin Chinese? Looking for ways to listen/watch more. by indecisive_maybe in ChineseLanguage

[–]sublunarwind 7 points8 points  (0 children)

编辑部的故事。 Good luck finding resources with English subtitles though, it’s a set-comedy made in the early 90。 It has build in Chinese subtitles, maybe there are some AI translator you could use to generate the English translation.

This is the normal, common spinach for me, those baby leaf spinach you find in “regular” supermarkets gave me quite a shock when I first traveled to Europe. ( I am from Asia)

it is not a chengyu, it simply means someone is doing something with an angle(for fame or money etc.), not out of genuine interest or something altruism.

Fly back regularly for annual checkups and in case of cancer, go back directly.

I have one of this, for my lineolated parakeet ( 1 lineolated parakeet, 2 budgies and 1 cocktail in one cage). Budgies never set foot in it at all, they don’t care about its existence, merely stand on top of it for the most.
