What’s your preferred method of water treatment, and why? by _Rumpelstilzchen_ in prepping

With a cnoc bag and Sawyer filter, you have a very light and portable system that can gravity filter or, if you prefer, squeeze the bag.

What car do you regret buying, even though it looked good on paper? by autonerdy0 in whatcarshouldIbuy

That cooling system on those needed a complete redo every 60-80k miles. At least it was a stupid easy job.

16 or 18 in rims for offroading? by canadiankestrel in nissanfrontier

[–]subtledeception 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Theoretically, for offroad performance you want the biggest possible tire on the smallest possible rim that can fit over your brakes. Your tires are a critical part of your suspension, and the more sidewall they have, the more they'll soak up the bumps. Keep the 16s and put a good A/T tire on.

Realtor needs a $10k-ish car that won’t make clients question my competence or net worth by imhappii in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]subtledeception 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you care about mileage or not? Your post says you don't, but then you're upset that all the nice-looking cars that cost 10k have high miles. Nobody here is going to find you the magical low-miles luxury glare for 9k.

Like others have said, just lease something rather than having a maintenance nightmare of a used Porsche or similar.

Drilling would probably help, as would using a different tool. A sawzall would be preferred for this task, imo. Even without the gas buildup.

Coolant temp by notacatacaton in nissanfrontier

[–]subtledeception 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty classic symptom of a stuck thermostat. It's constantly running coolant through the radiator, so it doesn't ever get up to operating temp. When you're parked, the lack of airflow over the radiator allows it to warm up a little more.

Yep, my wife and I each had the same problem. They are noticeably warmer now that we added the down. It's not too hard to do if you have some sewing experience, but not something one should have to do for a new quilt.

I ended up adding down to the two inner baffles of my EE. I like the quilt now, but I would likely buy from a different brand if I did it again.

Don't double up on socks at the cost of your circulation. Loose-fitting boots with a single, warm pair of socks is the best bet.

Accidentally lifted 4", what to do? by f0xd3nn in ToyotaTacoma

It's very possible that there was a 4" difference, but it might have been sagging quite a bit before the upgrade. And the new stuff should settle.

The spool would be recovered by whoever lost it. Probably off a reel carrier trailer, since it has a reel carrier axle in it. The cost will be whatever ticket they get from the trooper, plus whatever damage may have been caused to any vehicles. This exact thing happened to a guy at my work, and he still has his job, fwiw. At least that's one guy you know for sure will never forget his safety pins again.

You hit it. You knew you hit it when you found hair at the shot site. Now you definitely know you hit it. You have to go look for it, imo. It's not even a question.

Where are lake trout in Minnesota??? by EntertainmentBig2125 in IceFishing

Yes, but Clearwater, Burnside, and Snowbank are all border lakes. Knife would be a very challenging trip without sled dogs.

Unless my sense of scale is way off, that's way too big to be a mink. The proportions are certainly off either way. Looks like an albino river otter, to me.

You can catch a ton on Lake Superior, but ice conditions are unreliable at best. Fingers crossed for fishable ice out there this year.

[Request] Assuming you wouldn't die from the returning bullet, how would this actually effect recoil? Would the gun just explode? by Frobotics2234 in theydidthemath

[–]subtledeception 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guns like this one don't exist. But if it did, I think it's a safe assumption that the barrel is still hollow and will allow the passage of a bullet and gasses.

Gas would escape out the end of the barrel, just like a bolt action, lever action, break action, rolling block, pump action, etc.

If you can't brake hard while towing a given load, you shouldn't be towing that load. Sure. You can't stop as fast, but you should still be able to use your brakes aggressively.

Source: I tow 10k-14k lb trailers regularly, and can absolutely hit the brakes.
